No history of multiples, not on any fertility treatment. Bit shocked. Lady doing scan was shocked too, never seen before, and spent an hour checking it was true! Still sinking in, but info would help it to sink in, I hope.

Any other people who have triplets or expecting triplets?

  • how long can you usually carry them for?
  • what are the effects on your body?
  • what's it like after?!!! (a long one)
  • how likely is it all 3 will live?
etc.

No question of termination for me, so just trying to get to grips with the reality here, it's all very surreal.

Wow! Well done and congratulations to both of you!!

Have you heard of the book Extreme Motherhood-The Triplet Diaries by Jackie Clune? You can get it on Amazon.

She kept a diary right from the beginning so it would give you an idea of what to expect and probably give you some handy tips!

Daniya · 13/05/2008 16:24

THREE - wowee that is impressive!!! I bet your eyes were very wide at the scan!!

Congratulations Congratulations Congratulations - bit of a triple theme there!!

I was just talking the other day to my friend who's expecting twins and we wondered what people who have triplets do with regards to prams - you'll have to let me know!

Looks like you were right on your prediction of twins - and you got another one into the bargain!
I have no advice to offer but it looks like you're in good hands here anyway!

Heartmum2Jamie · 13/05/2008 16:35

That is BRILLIANT news, congratulations x3!!! I hope the shock wears off soon. I also can't believe how close yor prediction was.

lackaDAISYcal · 13/05/2008 16:40

merrymarigold

but big, big, big congratulations

there are two sets of identical triplets at my DSs school. the mums say it's not as bad as everyone thinks, but routine is all.

wishing you an healthy and well pregnancy and we'll hopefully be able to keep you sane on the Nov AN thread. We thought we statistically were due a multiple, but everyone thought twins, not triplets

timesofhope i will definitely be keeping up with you. are you having scans every 2 weeks already? I am booked for next one at 22 weeks, but haven't seen a consultant as yet. Look forward to hearing whether they are boys or girls - identical is really rare.
tigger i will be on the multiples threads soon. gonna do a bit of research on this...but would really appreciate your answers to my questions too.

No-one has believed me so far. My friends think I am kidding!

TiggerTonkerTruck · 13/05/2008 21:13

O.k. so I will try and answer them quickly for you,but if you want to e-mail me for more stuff or you want me to explain in more detail you are very welcome to!!

[email protected]

How long can you carry them for?

Very hard question. It really does all depend on each seperate PG.
The number of weeks that I was told to aim for was 29weeks. This is not ideal, but it is the point where the babies have a much higher survival rate(sorry to be so 'medical').

I had a cervical stitch put in so that my body had more chance of keeping them in for longer(done under GA not painful). Just imagine the top of a drawstring bag PMSL.
I carried my three for 34weeks but I do know people who have carried for longer and also for less. From what I know it seems that 32-34 are quite normal.

Effects on body?
This was my first PG so I really don't have anything to compare it too,but I went to the gym up until 4months(then did Tai chi)and worked until 6months (also moved house and re-decorated inbetween) and was very mobile up until about 30weeks when I started to get tired. I had no stretch marks until the bloody last month I thought I had got away with it,but I did have really bad all day sickness for months!!
Medically there have been no after effects from having triplets, I did have high blood pressure after they were born but that was a normal problem that could be had with a singleton birth.

I'll have to e-mail you about life after LOL that really is a long one!! Lets just say I have had a total blast,I would do it all again and I still want more kids

To rest your mind a bit,all the people I know who have had triplets (prob 6) have all delivered their babies safely. Most peoples babies have spent time in SCBU but it is not as scary as you think, usually just to be monitored as some babies can be quite small, mine were 3.7 3.13 4.5 weights and were born within two minutes. I had mine under GA.

The best thing I can say to you,is surround yourself with positive thoughts and people. Be determined and try not to imagine the whole picture at once,it can look much more daunting than it really is.
Oh and try not to google to much LOL you'll scare yourself to death!!

Congratulations!

MerryMarigold · 13/05/2008 21:51

Thanks Tiger. Lots of typing in what must be quite a mad world for you! (Tho' sure you are used to it now). Did a bit of googling but it's all too confusing so just read a couple of babycenter articles...Your info has been the most helpful though. Just going to spend a week trying to let it sink in a bit before we start even thinking about things like new car, what on earth kind of buggy, bedrooms, au pair etc.

I have hardly been sick at all. Very tired till about week 11 but not once thrown up! have been really great for a couple of weeks now. Was just getting a bit embarassed about bump size. Feel better about that now!

MultiTaskingMum · 21/05/2008 16:45

I had a 2yo & 4yo, then 3rd pregnancy was 'surprise' triplets, 7years ago. They were miracle babies - born at 36 weeks, (CSection under spinal block),(weighed 4.2, 4.11, 4.12), on the 'normal' ward with me and home at 7days old. Completely agree with Celia2 above. Do ask if you've questions!(am new to mumsnet, so please be patient-only just found time!)

MerryMarigold · 21/05/2008 18:11

Thanks MTM. Wow, so you ended up with 5 kids! What car do you drive? Questions: did you eat a lot more when pregnant? Did you do anything in particular to have such healthy babies? How did you cope with the older kids when you were also coping with the triplets? How did they handle it (specially 2yo). And finally, for you and Celia2

WHAT ARE THE REWARDS OF HAVING 3???!!!

OP posts:
MultiTaskingMum · 21/05/2008 21:42

Going from 2 to 5 was a shock , and life is complicated organisationally, but we can do most things - given time and planning!I have a Peugeot206 & we have a family Ford Galaxy-with a very big roof box for holidays!

When the triplets were newborn(Mar01) I had been working &studying and had a nanny looking after the older two (8am-6pm) who stayed another 5months(Jul). I persuaded the local college to 'lend' me a nursery nurse student each week (9am-4pm term-time 'til July)-they got great hands on experience but I had to 'train' them.

We & my in-laws paid for help 11pm-6am 3-4 nights/week for the first 12 or so weeks - I breast fed by expressing with an electric pump (same for other two). By 14weeks they all slept through

I ate a 'good' diet in pregnancy, but nothing special-maybe iron & calcium supplements. I'd had 2easy pregnancies &2 healthy babies 8.5lb and realised my triplets were unusual as I met more mums of multiples. Until 32 weeks I walked my son to school every day, & at 341/2 went into hospital to rest as I couldn't lift my 2yo any more. From 28weeks I had 2hours rest (siesta)a day. Best advice I ever had from a midwife friend in pregnancy No1. was to 'listen to my body' and if I felt ok, I did what I wanted, if I wasn't sure, I didn't.

A large family is never boring, you get talking to lots of people when you are out, and the children always have a playmate to play and argue with. There is something very special when THREE small children run out of nursery or school and throw themselves at you with huge hugs

Did I answer everything?? Keep asking..... I know I had hundreds of questions and every family will have a different story. Good Luck - you will be fine

MerryMarigold · 22/05/2008 09:19

Thanks so much for al the advice. We are in the throes of trying to figure out how we'll manage, known about them now for just over a week and feels like several months! I have one ds who is 2.5. He's had me exclusively since he was born, so I was a bit worried about a no.2 putting his nose out of joint (I am the eldest and still have not got over that experience!!!). I'd figured a few ways to spend time with him once I had the baby, but now it is 3 babies, I am as worried about him as I am about me. Is it possible for him to help me out with babies at tender age of 3?

So far, we are going to get an au pair from beginning of September (when I'll be about 27 weeks), to help out with our son so I can get rest etc. We are also TRYING to move as we are in a 3 bed place at the moment, so it will be VERY tight with 4 kids and an au pair. I was going to put babies in our room. I'm not sure where we would put a night nanny...Hopefully we will get some help from social services too. Just to compound things, I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Last time I was very well in pregnancy and afterwards for about 6 months, so I hope it will be the same this time. Long term, we will find ways to cope, I'm sure.

Trying to finish doing our house up, sell it and buy in the next 20 weeks is a bit daunting! I am happy as long as we manage to sell ours before it gets cluttered with 'stuff', 'people' and 'babies'. Moving with newborn triplets won't be easy, but I can't see how we are going to get everything done in time. I'm a fairly relaxed person as a rule, so I'm not panicking TOO much! But am also aware for need to plan and prepare while I am feeling up to it.

Is the electric pump better than the hand pump? What's a good one? I have an Avent hand pump. I really would like to breastfeed babies (tho' I'm sure they'll need some formula too). I had WAY too much milk last time with ds and was in a lot of pain most of the time, up a lot in the night due to 'exploding boobs' etc., so hopefully this time there will be somewhere for it all to go! Ds was a hugely fat baby just on breastmilk! Not sure how we'll manage if they have to stay in hospital without me, but will definitely be hoping to find a way round it, expressing etc. Did yours breast and bottle feed with no problems or did you express and have all bottles?

Anyway, I am excited as well as petrified. It feels very special to be having 3. People's reactions already are quite a sight!

Thanks for your long answer, it's reassuring to read that people stay calm and collected even as a mother of 5!

By the way, were your triplets identical/ fraternal? What did you have?
