Wrestling my 2 year old twins today, whilst trying to return some library books a woman barks at me

Her: How old are they?

Me:2

Her: what, both of them???

Me: erm yes well they are twins

Her: they don’t look like twins!

Me: oh do fuck off (I wish I had the balls to say that) instead I said, I can assure you 2 came out at the same time

I know this has probably be done to death but honestly it drives me bonkers. What possesses people to say such things???

They must have been tiny at birth...
Nah, they were 8lb 5oz & 8lb 11oz at 38wk, yes I was ginormous!!

How do you tell them apart? They are both girls and quite similar but fraternal so look very different to us, even their cries were very different and I didn't need to look at them to know who wanted something.

When they were newborn... I still got asked if I was due soon. No!! My body has just been destroyed by growing 2 babies thanks.

Mabelface · 07/09/2021 09:58

Did you have fertility? Which position did you have sex in to conceive?
Are they natural? No, I had them crafted from silicon.
Ooh, rather you than me! Yeah, my kids think that too.
I'd kill myself if I had 3 babies! Don't let me stop you.
Ooh, you've got your hands full! Can't say I'd noticed.
Are they identical? No, one's a girl.
All boys? Yup, I was so gutted that I didn't get a girl that I dress one up in girls' clothes to make up for it.
Do they have different personalities? Nope, they're exact clones of each other.

@Mabelface ...and we have a winner 🏆Smile

I’m a fairly new twin Mum but I can’t believe how many people ask if my girl/ boy twins are identical! Even several nurses have asked this!

DancyNancy · 09/01/2022 09:26

'(Boy /Girl with different coloured hair and don't look alike at all).....
Are they identical ?' .........so you need a dictionary?

Were they natural/did you have fertility treatment? ......yes they were conceived via penetrative sex and I was surprised it was twins in fact I bawled my eyes out and pretty much fell apart with anxiety and worry since cause I barely coped with my first baby then they handed me two more

Did you have them naturally? .....naturally? If you call pushing them both out of my vagina after induction during which several hands went up there to poke around first followed by an epidural and a crowd of 8 people watching my spread legged efforts 'Natural'

Re my 3 year old : is she a great help?
Ya....ya.........strong willed 3 year olds are like having a full time nanny to hand.

I did get irritated by the volume of comments but most ppl were being kind and curious and I didn't mind but the above always felt pretty tedious/intrusive!

DancyNancy · 09/01/2022 09:28

Those were mental responses by the way......I wasn't able to pull those to people's faces Grin

When mine were little(8 now)I actually found the comments & unsolicited advice from other twin parents more annoying.
I definitely think a lot of twin parents are quite gloating & love the attention whereas I hated it. Was sick of being stared at. I’d say No when people asked if the two newborns in my pram were twins. It made me agoraphobic at one point.
They’d literally come running out of nowhere to tell me they have twins too & I should do A, B & C.
I’ve never had the urge to do this when I see twin babies. Twins really aren’t that uncommon now & im well aware of not being the first and only. You can hardly advise on a usually one off experience anyway. It’s a wing and a prayer type situation isn’t it.
Honestly it drove me insane.

To add to the list..

Doctor “you can’t breastfeed two babies. Women don’t produce enough milk for that”
Sat before him two EBF five month olds.
He just wouldn’t accept that they were really BF.

“So who’s side do twins run on?”

“We almost had twins because Twins run in DH’s family but his sister had them instead”

A lady asking them if they were twins when they were 2. She asked them over and over whilst they just stared at her. When I explained that they didn’t know what twins were she told me I should have told them by now.
They got asked so much that by 3 or 4 they just told people as they walked by, “We’re twins!”

“Twins” the amount of people who feel compelled to just say that one word as they pass is bizarre.

Stupid comments come with motherhood I think. It’s like we push out a baby and society things it has a right to comment on every aspect of our parenting. I lost one of my twins and I always get ridiculous comments from ppl who should know better saying my DS ate them. Er no they didn’t. If anything ate them my womb did as it did the previous 30 times. DS was the miracle Angry

birdglasspen · 17/01/2022 06:14

I’m a twin, at 10 in our school class my teacher asked “do you ever have twin moments where you both go shopping and buy the same dress?” ....my brother (also in class) was not delighted 😂 ... always being asked if we are identical. Maybe answer is “identical means looks the same?”

@ellesbellesxxx we have non-id twin boys and I’ve had a few folk comment that they’re “real” twins as identical can happen to anyone.
I was just like 🙄 aye very good.
