Wrestling my 2 year old twins today, whilst trying to return some library books a woman barks at me

Her: How old are they?

Me:2

Her: what, both of them???

Me: erm yes well they are twins

Her: they don’t look like twins!

Me: oh do fuck off (I wish I had the balls to say that) instead I said, I can assure you 2 came out at the same time

I know this has probably be done to death but honestly it drives me bonkers. What possesses people to say such things???

I’ve had the are they identical one about my b/g DTs many times, I tend to just look at them for a second before the penny drops that they can’t be! I do agree though that they look very similar.

I particularly hate 'double trouble' or 'the terrible twins' about my perfectly well behaved identical boys who are a damn sight less rude than the random people spouting offensive shit !!

I have identical twin brothers. My mum's favourite was when they were in the shopping trolley dressed identically in blue and someone said "aww, one of each, how lovely!".

We also have friends with twin girls who are six months older. We went out together a lot the summer the girl twins were almost one and the boy twins were six months older, and constantly got asked if they were quads, despite the obvious size difference.

I've always wanted to answer "are they twins?" with "no, they're triplets but we left the other one at home."

Say you got them 2 for 1 from an aisle at Aldi!!

This is EXACTY how I've responded on more than one occasion!

It's honestly not like me (people pleaser, even strangers, weirdly!) but I couldn't help myself.

Reminded me of starting high school, teacher is calling our (full) names out to get to know who we are, twins in the class, the teacher calls their names out then asks “are you related?” They were identical as well 🤦‍♀️ She did enjoy a bit of the old “sauce” though apparently so…🥂

Boy/Girl twins here too. Always got asked if they were identical. Never mind the different sex, they don't remotely look alike!

Ah Twins! I probably say all of those things, and gush about how amazing and special they are. There is just something wonderfully amazing about multiples thru deserve to be celebrated. Congratulations on your twins pps.

I have taught a few sets of twins over the years. I taught a set of identical boys. When they were little, one of their old uncles asked R whether his brother, W, had a girlfriend. 'Nah, he's too ugly' his identical twin replied ...

People are just trying to be nice. As an ex-pat, I get a lot of this too but with different phrases. It's annoying when it happens (at my 2nd COVID jab?!) but most people will probably tell you that there's something about them that triggers the clichés.

Get this alll the time with my twins too.

One of my twin DDs had black hair, the other had white hair. People used to ask me how I could tell them apart?

I took them out in the buggy - it was summer and both had frilly dresses on. Someone said

“Oh, a boy and a girl! How nice! Now, your family is complete!”

We frequently got the comments about sex twice in one night. I couldn’t be bothered to say they were by IVF!
