Dating scan shock

emma911030 · 10/06/2020 21:01

Today I went for my dating scan. The lady scanning me initially was a trainee who was a sister within the hospital.. either way. She found baby and said there we are with little heart flickering and said and there's just the one to which my response was thank god i think I'd have a heart attack If there was two.. so the sonographer kinda said Woohh (I thought that was her response to my comment) but she got the scanning lady to move across to which there was a second baby. I literally said are you serious.. followed by 'fuck' (excuse my language) and I burst into tears I didn't know what to do. Was on my own cause obviously have to go on our own. My appointment was at 9 this morning and I'm still not sure I've got my head around it. I was dating at only 10 weeks 6 days so I'm back again next Thursday when I will be 12 weeks exactly.. I already have a little boy and when there's are due he will 2 months before his 2nd birthday. I'm literally no idea how I'm going to cope with 3 under 2. But before I even get to that I'm so terrified something is going to go wrong it's really playing on my mind and worrying me.. how can I get over this shock and worry.

@emma911030 no bother! I haven’t seen a specialist midwife, I see the community midwife but a specialist twin consultant and a specialist sonographer (the one at my local hospital apparently doesn’t have much expertise with twins, so I had my dating scan at my local, my anomaly scan with be there and a growth scan if I get to 36 weeks, but all other scans I’m going to a different hospital).

I suspect they do things slightly differently in different areas depending on who they have available?

emma911030 · 24/06/2020 09:29

@crazychemist ahh lovely thank you 😊 I think from what they were saying last time we have a specialist twin team of consultants and midwives so maybe a

Sorry my sons foot stood on my phone and message sent 🤦🏼‍♀️.
Yeah maybe it's a little different but then maybe it's just I'll deal with them with any questions or whatever while I'm at the appointments and then just attend normal community appointments as normal too, we shall see i guess 😊

@emma911030 not long until your scan on the 3rd now, do you know if they definitely have the same placenta? There could be a chance they fused together which is a good thing. I couldn't remember if your were in separate sacks like mine? Of your share a placenta your are scanned every two weeks from 16 weeks. I'm every 4 weeks from 20 weeks as mine are separate sacks and placentas. They gave me a print out at my 12 week scan of the 'scan protocol' and I'll see a consultant at 20 weeks for the first time but just standard midwife appointments otherwise in-between. I'm imagining you'll see your consultant at 16 weeks.

I've posted my twin bump at 18 weeks on the due Dec/Nov thread so you can see in not exactly massive. But I would imagine from 25 weeks most people with twins are going to end up fairly planetary! I think a lot of wen take maternity at 30 weeks because of this, mobility wise.

ChampooPapi · 24/06/2020 14:50

*alot of woman

My predictive text is up the spout sorry 🤦

twinmum2017 · 24/06/2020 14:53

I can't remember the frequency of midwife and consultant, but for me it was all at the hospital with a specialist twin midwife.
They did try to do them on the same morning so I'd have back to back scan/midwife/consultant

HGC2 · 24/06/2020 15:10

Congratulations! Sounds like you have recovered a little from the scan shock, I remember it well! I had a 2 year old and went on to have boy / girl twins.

Assuming that things will be a bit different due to COVID but you should get more appointments and scans with twins, especially identical ones.

Mine were born at 33.3 weeks and were little but healthy, they are now nearly 13 and it really is the most special relationship, hate to sounds corny but it really is a blessing and I say that in spite of health worries, twin fights and all the bad stuff!

emma911030 · 24/06/2020 15:33

@ChampooPapi they phoned this morning and due to the things picked up at the first scan the consultant I saw last time that explained everything to me wanted to see me sooner so have 'squeezed' me in at 8am tomorrow which now I'm doing my own head in thinking they're really concerned or something 😔. I'll be glad to see what's happening but still full of worry. Yeah they said last time they had the same placenta and that they were sharing a outer membrane but had their own separate inner membranes I think it was.
I'll have a look in a min, I feel huge on an evening and only a little podgy first thing x

@twinmum2017 thank you. They mentioned last time I'd be seeing the 'twin team' and said they had specialise twin midwives so I guess I'll find out tomorrow or at least I'll ask anyway..
I feel like I need to go in to tomorrow with plenty of questions cause I'll forget anything I want to know when I'm sat in front of them but I have nothing at the moment. But I know I have lots in my head somewhere! Is there anything you would suggest/recommend maybe I ask that I maybe haven't thought of with it still being new to me? x

Thank you @HGC2.. I think I'm just about over it now. Hopefully if all is well tomorrow I plan on telling a few close family and friends and then waiting until maybe 16/20 weeks to tell anyone else just to make sure they're doing ok. But fingers crossed everything tomorrow is ok! But I'm sure I'll post something to update you lovely ladies that have been so kind up til now x

@emma911030 congratulations, you will be fine , when my twins were born my dd was 3y1m my ds 18 months I then had another baby just before the twins turned 1. We bought a quad pram which also is available as a triple - the T3.

twinmum2017 · 24/06/2020 16:25

So this is your 12 week scan?

I think the main thing really at this stage is finding out for sure that they are sharing a placenta and whether they have a membrane between them. And then if so, ensuring they will see you every 2 weeks from 16 weeks.

emma911030 · 24/06/2020 16:34

@twinmum2017 yeah so I went to my 'dating scan' but only dated as 10+6 so was meant to go back last week when I'd have been 12 exactly but was waiting for covid results for my son so had to cancel. But came back negative so was booked for next Friday but they noticed a few things on first scan so wanted to see me sooner than next week. So tomorrow I will be 13 weeks exactly.
Thank you, I'll make sure they know for sure and let me know, Oki doke. I'm going to try and write some bits down so I don't forget so that's really helpful :)

I think it helps to know what should happen. Obviously I've no idea where you are, but while some hospitals are brilliant others are not that clued up on twin pregnancies.

Do you have a local multiples club? If so definitely find their Facebook page and get to know some other twin parents. X

crazychemist · 24/06/2020 17:32

@emma911030 good luck for your scan tomorrow. I have one tomorrow as well (my 16 week one). I hope it all goes well for you, fingers crossed.

emma911030 · 24/06/2020 17:53

@twinmum2017 I'm DorSet but haven't really looked yet, I think if things go well tomorrow I'll do some research about groups, didn't want to start joining groups before I told family cause they probably notice something and be confused lol.
@crazychemist thank you! Fingers crossed.. good luck for yours also! Hope all goes well x

Hope all went well today and you had plenty of information. 🙂

emma911030 · 25/06/2020 08:32

Hi ladies I just wanted to update.. after all the anxiety from last time I have had my scan and both babies are looking lovely, there are no signs of what was picked up at the first scan and the sonographer was really really happy!! So happy now! I'm just waiting to go to see the consultant. Thank you for all your kind words and support so far it's been really appreciated and well received xx

luzzbightyear · 25/06/2020 08:42

I found our it was twins at the 12 week scan. First preg, had no idea. Sonographer said "glad you're lying down, don't try and get up, take a deep breath.....you're having twins". They'd also had a bit of a morning with 2 other sets being diagnosed. They're 13 now and sometimes I feel like I'm still getting over the shock.... 🤪

emma911030 · 25/06/2020 08:52

@luzzbightyear haha oh dear. I wish I had the trained sonographer through the first scan so it was straight yep there's two rather than lovely just one and then oh no 2 😂. Aha that's great to know your still getting over it haha bless them. I feel like it's real but not at the same time if that makes sense. I'm so ready to tell people now too (I know maybe a little hasty considering twins) but I hope with some people knowing it might settle in my head a little more x

@emma911030 phew! So relieved for you!

My scan went well too. I had a bit of a panic this morning before I went. I can’t feel any movements at all (anterior placenta), and my bump felt “different” this morning (softer than it has been) and I was getting all tense thinking maybe something was wrong.... just paranoia fortunately! Probably just chubbing up!

emma911030 · 25/06/2020 14:14

@crazychemist so glad your scan went well! Especially for the fact you had them worries this morning. I guess if there's any time to have them worries it's the day you've got a scan!! I practically told the sonographer I loved her for all the good news she was giving me lol x

twinmum2017 · 25/06/2020 22:19

Scanxiety thats called 😉

Glad it all went well for both of you :)

emma911030 · 30/06/2020 12:02

So I finally told my family yesterday and now it's starting to feel a little more real.. although now starting to worry about work etc. I'm currently shielding and would normally work as a HCA in the local hospital. I got a letter from gov the other day saying people should only return to work from shielding at the beginning of August if the place of work is considered covid free. Mine isn't going to be. So unlikely I will be able to return I will be 20 weeks 22nd August then they are recommending pregnant women should only work until 28 weeks anyway due to higher risk in third trimester. I feel like I'm never going to go back to work but literally can not afford not to 😔 this is not working out so well at all and getting me down cause I just don't know what to do xx

Sorry I think I just needed to get that off my chest.
