There seem to be a lot of expectant twin mums around at the moment - I thought you deserved a thread of your own !

My id twin boys are 4.5 - but I can still remember what it was like . Maybe some of us old hands can answer some of your concerns and questions.

Just thought as my hospital doesn't allow you to know the gender of the baby, whether its worth payin £75 to have scan and find out?

With my last 3 I wasn't interested, but this time its more about being practical with 3 already and only a small amount of space, also buying clothes and things, I want to be as prepared as I can be, boys not such a problem as I have lots of boys clothes and my SIL just had a boy

Hi I am a mum of two (8yo and 4yo) but my sis is having twins in November and they are her first children. Have heard that some nanny training courses like to place students with homes with twins for work experience. This might be useful as she has no help at hand except me during the day but I will only be around in the mornings so afternoons and early evenings she will be coping on her own Does anyone know if this is possible? Not had much luck searching on the net. She is in Hampton Court/Molesey area.

ExpectingKat - I only had the one when I found out I was expecting my DTs but I really needed to find out, for the same reasons as you say. Also because, although I love little boys, I already had a little girl and, knowing my DTs were identical, felt I could deal with things better if they were girls . We were lucky though, our hospital allowed us to find out the sex, so we didn't have to pay for another scan. On the SPD thing - have you tried osteopathy? It's not a cure, but it can certainly help a lot and gets round the fact that you can't do the exercises the physios give you because of the pain!

Menad - many colleges running nanny/childcare courses need families for placements, although some have stopped putting students with families for insurance reasons. The best thing is to contact your local colleges directly, and probably best to do it soon, as term will be starting soon so they might be allocating places when they go back.

mumongmummy · 02/09/2007 21:37

Hi there, this is my first time on mumsnet and have been reading loads of the topics with lots of interest. I had twins when my first was just 10 months old. Minime, i had a BMI of about 55 and gave birth naturally at 35 wks, was induced cause little girl was not growing and boy was lot bigger. i was told everything would probably be hard because of my weight but i had them in an hour one was 5lb and one was 7lb. Sorry dont know what all the abbreviations on here mean, i am a bit dopey though!!
I was not given steroid injections, maybe you should check with doctor. My children are now two and a half and one and a half and although hard work they make me laugh a lot.

ExpectingKat · 03/09/2007 09:28

morning,
Thanx tkband3 its worth looking into. I'm going to my midwife just before my scan and I am going to have a word with her about finding out the sex, also to see if theres anyway round my matunity units policy! I'm not holding my breath though lol

mumongmummy I find it so annoying when the docters say your weight can cause lots of problems, It has never affected me. Before havin DS I had lost 8 stone but inbtween havin him and now expecting twins I put 4stone on . Can I just ask how did u manage with a 10months old and twins, 1 thing I am worrying about is if the twins are wantin there bottles and DS wants his breakfast where do I start al so havin to get DD1 and DD2 ready for school!

mumongmummy · 04/09/2007 01:05

Hi again. I used to always make sure the twins were up before my little boy, most of the time they were anyway and then whilst i fed him they played on their playmats or had a nap. As they got older i bought 2 of those entertainers(different styles) and put them in those so they could play. You can attach different toys and the seats spin round as well. I have to be honest they were a lifesaver as i knew they were safe and could not escape. I don't know if you are going to breast or bottle feed but i expressed for 13 weeks and then fed them with a bottle, if you are going to bottle feed there are bottles called Podee bottles which are designed to clip on to buggies, seats etc and they just suck which may be helpful if they need feeding at an awkward moment. I was given some but never used them but a friend who used them said they were fab. I have been lucky though to be honest as my family are great, they help so much and when they are here it means the children are all getting atttention.
About the BMI, they were so negative at the hospital about me being overweight, basically they said i would end up with lots of problems, probably have to have a csection as i am unfit etc. The only time i was admitted was because i got meningitis whilst pregnant but apart from that i was fine. I was induced and within an hour 2 babies were on the bed. My epidural had been booked for the following day and the doctor had been round moments before telling me all the high risk things because of my high BMI. You should have seen her face 15 mins later when she came in to the alarm going and my little girl in the midwifes arms!!

ExpectingKat · 04/09/2007 10:09

Hi mumongmummy Thanx for the advice,I think your amazin havin twins that quick wow! I've always used bouncy chairs the one I got when DS was born had vibrate aswell so I shall be keeping an eye out for another one of them, I havn't heard of them entertainin seats but I will have a look. Anythings worth ago lol
My mum works but I am sure my MIL will be a great help as she loves being around the children, she was so pleased in my last pregnancy as I took her with me to my scan, i think it made her feel closer and more involved.
I love it when you prove docters wrong, they just put everything down to weightand its hardly ever the case.
When I was expectin DD1 I went into hospital with high blood pressure at 36wks everyone was reall good explaining what could happen and that i might end up with a c section, then one woman docter walked in and said right infront of me for heavens sake its because she's so obese! Even though if that was the case I would of had problems throughout my preganacy. Some people are just so lovely.
wow sorry for the long post

yardette · 04/09/2007 20:10

Hi all
new here to twins page. just found out yesterday at my 12 week scan that I'm expecting fraternal twins. Excited shocked delighted and worried in equal measure. They're our first children! due on 11th March, but as that will be 40 weeks, sounds like it will be earlier
Will read all the multiple birth pages with great interest, and look forward to asking all of you pro's lots of idiotic questions over the coming months!
I've just bought a book on twin births, and was delighted to see that the author describes parents of twins as "elite mumsand dads and the creme de la creme of parenting".
thanks all in advance

jambuttie · 04/09/2007 20:17

congrats yardette

totaleclipse · 04/09/2007 20:19

congratuations, ask as many questions as you like

MarsLady · 04/09/2007 20:20

Congratulations!

yardette · 04/09/2007 20:34

Thanks all! 2 days in and I've already collected a number of hilariously stupid and inappropriate comments.
such as "Wow... i guess your husband will off for the snip afterwards" (what? is it law that we stop at 2 now? and since when was it their business?)
I'm also starting to feel like I should ask for a quid for every person I tell who says "do twins run in the family?" (no, they don't, or at least not that i'm aware of)
Ah well. Just reassure me - it is double the fun in the end isn't it??

totaleclipse · 04/09/2007 20:38

Oh it'll get much worse than that when they are born, here are just some questions you will be asked by strangers on a daily basis.........

are they twins?
are they identical?
who is the eldest?
ooh you have your hands full.
double trouble
did you know you were having twins?
were they early?

there are many many more

the usual 10 minute trip to the corner shop will become at least a 20 minute trip.

ladlemonke · 04/09/2007 20:38

Hi yardette

Many congrats!! I'm in the same boat as you, though about two weeks ahead. The shock has just about worn off now, though there are brief moments when it comes back and stops me in my tracks!
What is that book you mentioned? I'd like to get my hands on it, if only to show people the quote you mentioned!!

totaleclipse · 04/09/2007 20:39

And yes it is double the fun, when peole say to me, is it double trouble? I say, no it is twice as nice

MarsLady · 04/09/2007 21:09

don't forget to come and join us jaded....no........ experienced multiple mums on the regular d'y' ever thread! Boy can we tell you a question or 20 that people will ask. I'm pretty sure we have the template for the leaflet you'll need to hand out so that you can get where you're going.

Only 20 minutes (full moon/haf moon)totalclipse? Lucky you! Best part of an hour to enter Marks and Sparks.... rest of the school day to get out (and only cos I begged!)

NotAnOtter · 04/09/2007 21:13

ooh i almost feel envious!!!!!
Do you know what your dts are expectingKat?

Rhubarb · 04/09/2007 21:15

My sis has set up a twins group, I'll let her know about this thread, she's great on these things. Her twins are not identical and are now 10 - yes? Yeah 10, I'm sure.

tripletsandtwins · 04/09/2007 21:41

yardette & totaleclipse, i get asked those q's so many times during the day that I would be impossibly rich if I got a dollar for each time i heard it! Just today I've had: "You must have your hands full" "Wow triplets!? "Are they triplets?" "Geez you must not have got any sleep" "oooh triple trouble!" "Sorry". Just in a matter of 20 minutes!

Congratulations to all!

MERLYPUSS · 04/09/2007 22:20

Is the d'you ever thread for preggies or mums that have had their twinnies ?

carnation · 04/09/2007 22:38

Hi, Yes I'm the sis of Rhubarb (let it be known) mine are 9 and I have two more singletons at 15 and 17 so a little rusty on the baby and pregnancy stage.

A twin club is a good place to start for advise. Although, the first one that I went to was full of negativities on the terrible labours and births, so was a little off putting.

Using that experiance in a positive way I make sure that we offer lots of positives in the twin club that I support. I can relate to alot of things that have been said like all the negative comments. The worse one for me was 'I bet their hard work'

Anyhow good luck to all you expectant mums of twins and well done to all those who already have twins. Yes it is hard work, but worth the challange that is part and parcel of being a good parent.

MarsLady · 04/09/2007 23:36

The d'y ever thread is for multiple mums (dads if any were brave enough) whether they've had the babies or not. We have had our fair share of birth announcements there. Those of us who already have our DTs try not to scare those expecting with stories of Toilet Duck, Sugar, Butter and escapology. So come join us! We have cake!

ladlemonke · 05/09/2007 11:29

emmm.........what happens with Toilet Duck???

MarsLady · 05/09/2007 11:37

Perhaps we should save the Toilet Duck story until after you are happily cuddling your wee twins and are unable to believe that wee weapons of mass destruction are capable of breaking into the Toilet Duck...never mind swimming in it!
