Is it possible to have natural twin births?

Hi

I'm 18 weeks preg with twins, due in Aug.
I've had numerous discussions with midwives etc who seem to be of the mindset that a c-section is the most likely scenerio for twin births. This is my 4th pregnancy and the other 3 were a great experience, and as natural as they could possibly be.

help, can someone put my mind at rest!

I know of 2 women who have had twins naturally

SoMuchToBits · 29/03/2007 20:15

Well, I am a twin, and my mum had us naturally - so yes, it's possible, but that was 45 years ago, so maybe things have changed since then

Caromdoh · 29/03/2007 20:18

Any tips they could share?

I know I should view it as if it is two singletons...but can't help but feel there should be something I can do to make sure it happens naturally, daft I know!

I think most of us on the d'y ever wonder thread here have had natural twin births, it is certainly possible & I did, though DT1 was assisted by forceps - come and find out!

mrspink27 · 29/03/2007 20:23

My friend had her twins naturally 3 years ago, and there was 45 minutes between them! It was touch and go IIRC for a CS but she hung on in there and got a natural birth.

breadandroses · 29/03/2007 20:24

Oooh, hi, i'm having twins in July, this is also one of my worries! I've had two normal births, but am worried cos apparently it's common for the second twin to be in an awkward position.

dingdongjustforyoufg · 29/03/2007 20:27

I went into spontaneous labout at 35 weeks, woke in the night with pains and went in to hospital (despite their attempts to put me off ) 7cm dilated...DTs arrived about 12 hours later, 19 mins apart, they were long and skinny but ok and not in SCBU just in for a week cos of initial weight loss and jaundice

dingdongjustforyoufg · 29/03/2007 20:28

breadandroses I think that's true - DT2 was breech, she came out feet first (I think DH still has flashbacks to the sight of this )

dingdongjustforyoufg · 29/03/2007 20:29

and I should also say congratulations on being pregnant with twins both of you - it is a very exclusive club

breadandroses · 29/03/2007 20:30

How did it feel to have a breech baby? Or were you past caring by that point ?

Kelly1978 · 29/03/2007 20:30

I know lots of mums who have had vaginal. My consultant wanted me to, but I had a difficult pg and didn't feel up to it. Good luck!

breadandroses · 29/03/2007 20:31

Why thank you, are you sure

breadandroses · 29/03/2007 20:32

sorry that was to the congratulations!

breadandroses · 29/03/2007 20:32

Kelly, did you have a planned cs?

quadrophenia · 29/03/2007 20:34

I had a vaginal birth with my twins, although both were assisted delivery. I was talked into having an epidural though and really regret this now.

MarsLady · 29/03/2007 20:34

Yes it's possible. My Consultant wanted me to go for a vaginal but the DTs decided to lie sideways. However, there are lots of twin mums who've had vaginal births. Can I ask where your hospital is?

Anyhoo....... come and join us on the D'ya ever threads. And congratulations (I see you too BreadandRoses!)

dingdongjustforyoufg · 29/03/2007 20:35

It had already been a pretty long process upto then...knowing their personalities now I reckon I understand exactly what was going on (DT1 is v chilled out most of th etime, probably got kicked out by DT2 who is little miss bossy, but couldn't be bothered to move, so stayed put as long as poss, DT2 had to shift round to shove DT1 out ) - at the time it was quite exhausting!

Kelly1978 · 29/03/2007 20:35

yes, one of mine was dx breech, the other was unrecognised breech, but I suspected it. Plus my right lung had collapsed twice with the pressure, so I was booked in for an elective. Had to fight for it though.

there is an amazing vid on youtube of a home water birth of twins here
Marslady posted this link, she is a doula and a mum to twins, I'll give her a shout for you.

Kelly1978 · 29/03/2007 20:36

cross posted!

oatcake · 29/03/2007 20:37

best friend's sister just had vaginal twins. no problem.

they should be in the 'optimal' position to birth vaginally though, otherwise a section is recommended.

Caromdoh · 29/03/2007 20:37

It's hard I think, when you come to the point when you want the birth to be the way you want, without adding on any stress on the babies,

I keep having hissy fits with the midwives and Obs..and I'm only 18 weeks! I swear they roll their eyes when I come in for my appts!!

Quadronphenia- do you regret the epidural because without it you wouldn't have had an assisted delivery? (Thick emoticon)

possibly breadandroses.

It was an induction at 38 weeks, epidural, no feeling to push, forceps in theatre, pph, blood transfusion.

breadandroses · 29/03/2007 20:41

Kelly- bloody hell- is upsetting to think of you having to fight for it with a collapsed lung, I would have thought they'd be thinking "Christ she's in a bad way, let's give the poor girl what she wants"
