Zygosity testing - Identical or non-identical?

Hiya everyone,

I just wanted to post something that I thought may be of interest to other multiple mothers.

I have two twin girls. They both had their own plancentas and sacks. I was told that they were fraternal by the medical professional. I am a member of TAMBA, and they ran an article in their magazine about some fraternal twins actually being identical.

The article suggested that it is interesting and also useful to have your twins tested, as in later life, they want to know how 'close' they are and gave details of the multiple birth association as a place of contact.

We contacted them and it was a simple dna marker test, taken by 10 swabs per child.

The results were staggering! Our children were actually 100% Monozygotic (identical).

They provided a breakdown of the dna markers on a certificate, which will we keep for the girls when they are older.

The impact of this information is immense.

One of our girls had an illness and we were referred to hospital. When they asked are the girls identical and we replied yes, they said they would need to automatically check the second twin. The doctor informed us, had they been non-identical they would have only checked one....

It has turned out to be very useful.

Anyone out there had their multiples tested and the outcome was unexpected?

Nic

Well done LGoR!! I know how you feel - I was obsessing about it for months before I got the girls tested. I'm so glad I did. Some people thought I was nuts too, but I found the not knowing one way or the other really frustrating. What are your twins like?

LargeGlassofRed · 16/02/2010 20:23

thanks chopsache, did your girls end up being identical?
My too are looking more alike each day they are coming up to 8 months
They have the same hair and eye colour, and noses, but their eyes are quite different shapes. There are photo's on my profile

Hi LGoR, yes they did end up being identical. I didn't get the test done until they were 18 months. But they are uncannily alike in more than just looks, they have little habits that are the same too. I think us Mums are more inquisitive about this. I don't think my DH would have ever got the test done, although he was pleased that I did it.

The first consultant we saw told us they were non-identical because they were DC/DA and it wasn't until my 20 week scan that a different consultant told us this wasn't necessarily the case. But the percentage of identical twins with separate placentas isn't very high so I just pushed it out of my mind. (I think I secretly hoped they would be so different when they were born there would be no doubt). As it was we used to have to write down which colour babygro they were wearing when they were tiny!!

I think, for me, it was defo worth doing to satisfy my curiosity.

Awwww your boys are very cute. They do look very alike don't they.

Hi LGoR, I bet you're pleased you know for sure at last. You'll be able to let them know when they're older now too.
