I am 9.6 weeks pregnant and had a scan yesterday!
Doctor says they look as if they are identical !

I burst into tears of shock when he told me!

Ds will just be 2 when they are born !

I am so worried about the practical things and how the hell I am ever going to go out with all 3 children for the first 4 years!

Please tell me lots of positive things about having twins and that I will be able to cope! Also any advice about the pregnancy, doctor says that I have to be extra careful (not easy with a very active 18month old)!

Congrats I haven't had twins but there will be plenty of people here to help.

schneebly · 15/08/2006 09:44

Congratulations on such wonderful news - it is only natural to worry about how you will cope but people do it all the time and I am sure you will have plenty offers of help - take them! Best wishes. xxx

Quootiepie · 15/08/2006 09:44

Just remember looking into your DSs face when he was born... sooooooo cute! You'll have double that!

Quootiepie · 15/08/2006 09:44

Congratulations by the way!

JuA · 15/08/2006 09:58

Congratulations!!
My twins are now 6 months old - they are fantastic. dd1 was 2yrs and 2 months when they were born and yes it is hard work but great fun! and with a bit of practice it is possible to take all 3 out on your own!

biglips · 15/08/2006 10:01

Wow...many many congrats xxx (sorry got no advice to give to u)

tortoiseshell · 15/08/2006 10:06

Haven't got twins, but have lots of friends with twins - things they've said have been to make sure you have a REALLY good baby sling, plus a stroller suitable from birth, then you can have ds on buggy board, one twin in the buggy and one in the sling. By the time they're too big for the sling, you can use a double buggy, and ds will probably be more able to walk.

I would also see if you can find a playgroup that will take ds from 2.5 to give you some space!

Congratulations!

Marina · 15/08/2006 10:08

Scummy has some and so has Justine!
There are quite a few on Mn, hope they can continue to give you lots of good advice and support.
Congratulations on your pregnancy Leogaela, hope all goes well for you

MarsLady · 15/08/2006 10:19

Congratulations!

I laughed for 5 weeks when they told me at my dating scan that it was twins.

Come on join us on the D'y ever still wonder how life got like this thread.

Taking the DTs out on a playdate but will be about later.

My email if you need it is lovelymarslady at aol dot com.

It will be fine I promise. You will cope and we'll help you through. Lots of us twin mums on MN (even some triplet mums.... nothing but respect there!)

Much love and welcome to the world of multiples.

leogaela · 15/08/2006 10:27

Thanks everyone ! I'm slowly feeling better and better about this! The shock is wearing off a bit!

JuA, I would love some tips on how to go out all together! I love taking ds swimming - have you done anything as adventurous as that with 3?

I had a panic look at some double buggies yesterday and the only ones that seem to be OK from birth are the wide ones which I think will be impossible to even get through a checkout in a supermarket! I guess you are right though, i will carry one and have ds (when he wants to sleep or not walk) and the other twin in a one in front one behind buggy.

musicbugs · 15/08/2006 11:01

Congratulations - that's fantastic news!

I have twin girls aged 10 now and also two boys aged 7 and 4 (so it can't have all been bad IYSWIM )

A good twin stroller its a must, try and find something suitable from birth to 4 years if possible and fit a buggy board on the back for your eldest.

Bouncy chairs were a god send for me when feeding. I used to breast feed one and bottle feed the other with EBM and would put the the bottle fed one into a bouncy chair facing me on the sofa. Ok, a bit of a palavar but I never could mange to breast feed both of them at the same time.

If you decide to bottle feed, you can use the chairs in the same way, also when weaning!

Do you have lots of support from family? Bear in mind that if morning sickness is going to be a problem, it could well be quite debilitating for a while. You will also get big quite quickly and towards the end of your pregnancy might need some extra help at home, especially with your little one running around.

Fingers crossed for a great pregnancy!

NomDePlume · 15/08/2006 11:03

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, congrats to you leogaela

BTW - I always read your name a lego-la. lol

unyummymummy · 15/08/2006 11:15

I am 25 weeks pregnant with twins and this is my first time on a talk board!! I felt exactly the same as you when i found out, but now i feel so special to be given 2. My friends mum says, 'they only send you what they know you can cope with'.

Buggy wise we have ordered an Out n About nipper. It's so light and fits through most shop doorways (it's all about the shops!)Suitable from birth until 4.

Good luck - you will be fine
x

(and I always read it Lego-la too )

rachelw · 15/08/2006 12:02

Hi know how you feel. I laughed with shock but then burst into sobbing tears as we drove down the road!!!! Then got VERY practical!!

My daughter is just four and starts school in September so it has been easier to get her doing things for herself a bit as I find things are much harder to do than when I was carrying one. Just don't push yourself It doesn't harm little ones to entertain themselves or become a bit more independant.

I bought a second hand twin pram then moved house and found it won't fit through doorways here!! Just brought a tandem ready for when they are three months. It will be a case of muddling through and see how it goes. But it is strange how you get all practical with twins!!!

Mine will be here in two weeks so if I have any more informed advice after then will let you know!!! Good luck and don't push yourself - listen to your body!!

FoghornLeghorn · 15/08/2006 12:04

Wow Congratulations

Congrats leogaela , and unyummymummy.
I too remember the shock of that first scan. I had non identical boys. My oldest son was only 20 months when they arrived, so do you know that is can be done
Really hard work but worth it, is my sum up. Will be glad to offer any advice on here or you can CAT me if you like

waterfalls · 15/08/2006 12:58

Congratulations leogaela, I remember going from laughter, to tears, feeling light headed, then to panick when I was told I was carrying twins, they are 2.6 years now (beautiful identical girls) its really not as bad as you might imagine, as long as you keep them both to the same routine.

stitch · 15/08/2006 12:59

congraats.

leogaela · 15/08/2006 13:19

its so nice to have so much support from you all ! i'll come and join the D'y... thread!

Congratulations to you too yummymummy

toilet duck????

I live in Switzerland so my family are not close by, dh's parents are but are really old and his sister has 4 children of her own so not much family help.
I'm 10 weeks now and the sickness hasn't been a problem at all thankfully, I'm just completely tired all the time.

I think we get some help for the first couple of months after the birth from an organisation here and my mother says she will come over, but that's more of a threat than a promise of help tbh !

I'm workîng 3 days at the moment, I'm going to put ds in the nursery andextra day every couple of weeks so I have some real resting time and after the babies are born he'll carry on going. Am I realistically going to have to give up work earlier? when do you experience twin mums think I will be able to work up to?

I'm hoping to go back to work 3 days a week after they are born (somewhere between 6 months and a year after) - am i mad to consider that?

Congratulations Leogaela. My DTS are now 2.6yo and I can still remember our reaction at the 12 week scan when we realised we were expecting twins. We were on high for about a month. I felt really special and bless because I had suffered a miscarriage 4 months earlier.

Get ready to be stopped in the street every 5 minutes with comments like:

Are they twins?
Are they identical? Yes oh, are they both boys/girls then?
Buy one get one free
Double trouble
I bet your hands are full
I bet they keep you busy

After the twins were born, I realised that I had to allow an extra 45 minutes for shopping trips/walks etc because of the amount of times I was stopped.

My one advice is to get a pram that is easy to push and manoeuvre. I have the Mothercare Urban Detour 3 wheeler and even now I can still push it easily with one hand. The one downside is that it is fairly heavy to lift (15kg) but I would not be without it.

It is great though and you will love every minute of being a twin's mum.
