DH wants to consider having more children this year! I am a bit scared about the possibility of having a second set of twins and wondered if anyone has them or knows someone who has them and any words of wisdom on what its like (other than difficult!)

A woman I met briefly yesterday waiting for an appointment at the doc has two sets of identical boys - one set are five and one set are two!

harrogatemum · 24/02/2006 15:15

did she look knackered?

I would imagine HM that you would do well as you already know the pitfalls and the pleasures.

Personally... I'd wait a few years

popsycalindisguise · 24/02/2006 15:47

I know a woman who had twin girls then twin boys when the girls had just turned three

Kelly1978 · 24/02/2006 15:53

I saw some out once, a set of babies and a set of twins prob aged about 2. All in a quadruple buggy, babies in the back. I was dying to go say hello, but I thought she must get so much hassle and it's none of my business! I'd be terrified of the possibility of a twin pg again, but not so much the babies. Some studies reckon the chance of having a second set can be one in twelve, but it depends on other factors.

katyp · 24/02/2006 16:25

I think someone my sister went to school with had two sets (and a singleton!) And they were all quite close together in age....

harragotemum - watch baby baby on sky livingtv2. I'm watching a lady who has toddler twins and has jsut brought home triplets.

Kidstrack2 · 24/02/2006 19:47

hiya my neighbour has 2 sets of grown up twins, they are now 25 and 18 both boy/girl. Seemingly she releases 2 eggs every month one from each ovary hence the non identical twins, her mother was the same and now thinks her 18yr old daughter has same problem because of heavy periods

Kelly1978 · 24/02/2006 19:48

all these twins on tv are making me broody!!

harrogatemum · 24/02/2006 19:55

kelly - dont have sky - aaaaaggghhhh. But all this talk of twins is making me broody. DT2 keeps leaning in to kiss me at the moment, wide open mouth, tongue hanging out. Sounds gross but is soo cute!!!

lol. I'd like another one, but dp wouldn't agree, and like u, I dont fancy more dts. How old are yours again?

harrogatemum · 24/02/2006 20:09

15 months - when they are good they are very very good and when they are bad they are a NIGHTMARE!!!

OP posts:
Kelly1978 · 24/02/2006 20:13

u don't have any older ones do you? The only thing I'm thinking is that they get sicker even more often when there are lots to spread it about. Also, they egg each other on to be VERY bad.
I love it now, but it takes a bit of adjusting. ds was 2 when I had the dts, and dd was 4. The first 6 months were hell, but now I'ver realised I don't dread mondays any more and it is a lot easier. I think I only had the two I would be tempted now.

deha · 27/02/2006 09:38

I've got two sets: six year old boys and two year old girls.

all very cute, but wouldn't recommend it.

we tried again after the boys to have the experience of a singleton, which obviously didn't work out :)

muma3 · 27/02/2006 09:53

my dp nan had
boy
twin boys
boy
twin girls
dp's mum is one of the twin girls i think that must of been nightmare and there is only 7 years between oldest and youngestShock

harrogatemum · 27/02/2006 19:34

deha - wow, someone with first hand experience!!! Question 1 - what kind of car do you drive? 2 - what about a buggy? 3 - just how do you cope in general.....? feel free to scream if tha thelps.

OP posts:
deha · 27/02/2006 22:58

We drive a VW Van (yup, looked at everything else and no people carrier could cope with four carseats and a twin buggy), and love it. Lots of space. B**ch to park, though.

The boys were almost 4 when the girls arrived, so they didn't need a buggy anymore. And, as lots of people thought it would be really funny to point out, we already had all the stuff (including pram) that you need for twins. Yeah, that made it lost easier...

How do we cope? I'm at work four days a week, the girls in nursery and the boys in school. Don't think I could do it full time at home with the lot, though.

They are lovely (they are all healthy, none were premature, and they are all doing well, so we are very lucky), and it is really interesting to watch them grow and develop, to see differences and similarities, especially since we have both non-identical and identical ones. I occasionally call this my own twin study lab.

On other days, I just sit there, look at them, and think 'why'?!

kiskidee · 27/02/2006 23:35

a colleague's wife had 2 sets of twins under the age of 18 months. he had to go for a promotion at elsewhere to pay for it all.

harrogatemum · 28/02/2006 08:36

wow deha - I am impressed. I work 4 days a week too but thats with one set of twins - and I struggle big style wondering why I spend so much money on the nursery but then loving my job too so its a bit of a dilemma all round. Not sure if I could carry on working if I had four....cost of childcare etc. Well we will just have to wait and see!!

And do you mind me asking you one more question - where on earth do you go on holiday?

OP posts:
deha · 28/02/2006 09:51

well, money wise, it makes no sense to work, but I would go insane at home. After the girls were born, I stayed at home for a year, with the boys in nursery 2 1/2 hours a day, and the rest of the day all four at home. I very much looked forward to going to work...

Holidays. We seem to largely end up with family, staying either at my mum's place (close to the seaside), or just recently with the inlaws (in NZ). Haven't tried anything more public yet (like a campsite) with all four. Come to think of it, I don't think we've ever been out for a meal with all of them (md's doesn't count), mmhh, wonder why...

It is do-able, but there are so many things that I would love to be able to do with each individual child that I can't that I sometimes feel sorry for them as well as me. Well, until the girls gang up on the boys, and the boys on the girls, and the four of them on me, when I think it is wonderful that they all have someone to gang up with, and that we didn't have a singleton after the twins to feel left out...

Am I helping ? :)

TinyGang · 28/02/2006 10:01

Wow deha! There should be a special MN award for you! I will never be able to feel justifiably worn out again having read your posts. You sound so on top of everything though - and you work tooShockSmile

prettybird · 28/02/2006 10:42

Ex-collegaue of mine had two sets of twins as siblings, plus another singleton. Six girls in all! (and all extremelay attractive - one was even a finalist for Miss Scotland)

Can't remember if either of the sets of twins were identical.

sandyballs · 28/02/2006 10:52

Blimey deha - hats off to you! I've got 5 year old twin DDs and just can't imagine having another set of twins. Which is part of the reason why we are not going for a third child - my doctor told me my chances of having another set of non identical are 1 in 16. Not sure how he worked this out though.

My DDs have twin girls in their reception class who have twin brothers in year 1. And the boss of a friend of mine has 14 month old twins and another set of twins due any day now Shock. I just can't begin to imagine how hard that will be.
