Question about non identical twins and scans

Hi ladies,

I found out last week that I am expecting non identical twins (14 weeks tomorrow). I was given a NT scan 3 days later, all fine. They then said that they will scan me again at 20+3 and I will see the consultant on that day too.

I am currently under consultant led care anyway (high BMI and gall stones). I read on the NHS website that non identical twins are scanned every 4 weeks. It will be 7 week between scans for me and I haven't see a consultant yet about the twins. Should I be concerned and contact my midwife for an earlier scan or does this sound about right to you?

Sounds normal to me. My appointments went
12 week dating scan (when I found out it was twins (nonID))
13week nuchal fold scan
20 week scan
24 week midwife/consultant appt
28 week scan midwife/consultant appt
32 week midwfe/consultant appt
36 week scan midwife/consultant appt
Boys were born at 35+5 the day after my 36 week scan (my scans were always mon of the week, and my actual due day was a thurs)

I was under consultant care but in reality saw the consultant at 20 weeks and then again at 32 weeks and that was it. The midwife talked to me, then popped next door to get the constulant to check her notes and sign me off. I was a bit Hmm at the time, and actually got a bit upset (I blame hormones) as everyone was saying you'll get scanned ALL the time with it being twins. However, in reality the care was great, and in hindsight I had a really straightforward pregnancy.

Congratulations on your twins

Congratulations on your twins!

I was scanned every 3/4 weeks but only from 24 weeks. Before that it was pretty much as i had with ds1.

I was also consultant led from the outset due to obstetric cholestasis in previous pregnancy. Which i also suffered with in my twin pregnancy, so ended up with weekly appointments after 30 weeks.

I think the norm is to ramp up the scanning etc after the 20 week scan

Good luck :)

I was scanned every 4 weeks from 20 weeks with both sets then fortnightly if they found a problem.

Congratulations on your twins - if you fancy it, come hang out on our twin ante-natal club www.mumsnet.com/Talk/antenatal_clubs/1424471-Twins-Club-4-All-welcome

I'm 28 weeks with non-ID/DCDA twins. The general feedback I've had from midwives/Drs/other twin-mums-to-be is that non-ID twins have much, much lower risks and this is especially the case in the first half of the pregnancy when you will probably be treated in a similar way to a singleton pregnancy. Depending on your hospital trust it seems that extra appts will start after either 20, 24 or 28 weeks.

The big difference to me so far is that both my scans have taken ages - the last one took an hour and a half so you are treated very thoroughly when you do have appointments.

So far I've had:
7 week scan - but this was at fertility clinic as twins are the result of IVF
8 week - bloods taken by midwife
10 week - midwife booking in appt
12 week - NT scan
16 week - midwife appt
20 week - midwife appt
22 week - '20 week' scan
27 week - midwife appt
28 week - scan
29 week - consultant appt. This will be the first time I see the consultant.

I think I may get scanned again at 32 weeks and midwife is currently booked for 34 weeks but may get brought forward. My care is currently community midwife led but the plan is definitely for a hospital birth. This might change depending on what the consultant says next week.

Congratulations, I had NHS scans at:
12 weeks
20 weeks
24 weeks
28 weeks

It should then have been every 4 weeks but I had weekly scans (alternating between doppler scans and full scans) as DT2 gave some cause for concern. I also had heart monitoring twice a week (that was reduced to weekly).

I paid for a couple of private scans before the 12 and 20 week scans as I had had 2 m/cs and was v nervous.

Thanks for all your input. I feel more relaxed knowing this :)
