If I start it here they can move it to the right place (If they decide to start a topic (& ever decide what to call it))

where do I start......

Can you not leave it in the plaits you did the night before in the morning? That way she won't have to go out with wet hair, and you can do the wet/condition/comb in the evening. I do that sometimes with my dd.

Galdem · 20/02/2011 14:38

her plaits get messy and frizzy from sleeping, even when they are really tight. That is partly why I wouldn't get her hair braided.

mammya · 20/02/2011 14:51

Does she sleep with a scarf on? My dd has a silky night cap which helps (when it stays on!)

Can you undo each plait and redo it without combing, but with some hair butter or conditioner on your hands to smooth it out? Then a hair band or scarf to hide the frizzy bits around the face? Sorry if you've tried that already without success!

KnackeredOne · 22/02/2011 19:51

Hi Franch,

I'm there tomorrow, so I'll have a gander for you.

What exactly would you like?

He works with Mixed Race hair, so it might be worth booking in for a consultation which I would assume, like all reputable salons would be free.

However, I will double check all tomorrow and report back.

Galdem

I have this trouble too - mornings are frantic enough without having to wash and style a toddler's hair every morning!

Whenever I plait my daughter's hair, it alway looks really messy the next morning. The only way I can keep it looking OK is by always having it in 2 ponytails (not plaits). I do the ponytails while she's in the bath, and leave them in overnight. If they're a bit fuzzy in the morning I take each one out and just smooth down with wet hands with a bit of conditioner. I also tend to wet the ends as the "bunchies" get a bit frizzy, but I don't need as much water as when I try to style from scratch, as it doesn't really need to be brushed, just refreshed.

I think it's because my daughter's hair isn't very long, plaits just don't hold it well enough. I'm hoping as it grows this will change, otherwise she'll get really bored of only ever having bunchies!

franch · 24/02/2011 17:11

Agh, sorry I didn't get your message in time KO. I'd just want a trim for DD1 (7) initially - and for her to walk out with her hair looking gorgeous :)

When they're older I want somewhere I can take them to have it styled for special occasions too.

I'd prefer not to have to do 2 separate visits (consultation and then cut) as it's not local.

Appleton: I found bunches better when their hair was shorter, and plaits much better now it's longer.

Thought I'd share this blog I found, if you need info on hair and hairsyles :)

mammya · 27/02/2011 20:31

Really good blog varicoseveined, thanks for that.

franch · 28/02/2011 10:29

How often do you all get your DDs' hair trimmed? I'm not talking preschoolers - I left it ages before touching my DDs'! But after that, when it's long - what's your routine?

www.tightlycurly.com/welcome

I have found this website a complete god send.. I have 4 girls and Sunday nights have improved dramatically!!!

franch · 28/02/2011 10:56

Fab! You'll see much praise for tightlycurly in this thread. It's worked wonders for us too.

friendlyedjit · 01/03/2011 08:55

it is just amazing how something as simple(comlex) as hair can affect a relationship with a dc. I was always the bad guy, causing pain, hating causing pain, feeling angry and frustrated because am so apparently crap at hair yet quite good at many other things Also the one standing in the way of the apparent chemical straightening, solution so disliked even more. It isn't perfect but it's better, she is happier and feels hair looks better and is beginning to embrace her very thick lucious very curly hair.

franch · 01/03/2011 19:25

That's lovely, friendlyedjit :)

minniminx · 31/03/2011 12:06

malikstoresonline, most afro products are found there. might i suggest fantasia hair serum for detangling its advertised as a straitening serum for adults but it really works for my daughter(and my hair too) who has course afro hair, takes some of the pain away. So glad to see im not the only one with issues with my mixed race dd's hair. I spend 20 minutes a day now, she refuses to allow me or anyone to put her hair up( which is how i like it), i went to the hair dresser and she cut it into a jackson afro, everywhere i go people compliment it. She does get confused for a boy which is strange cause she loves pink. And yes everyone touches it(live in devon) which can be really annoying especially when you have just sat there for ages styling it. Organics olive oil cream is a really good leave in conditioner and a touch of hair gel to tame the frizz. Ive just had to stop stressing , cant tell you how many people ive wanted to slap over my daughters haire loooooooool ps try soaking the hair with a water spray every day instead of washing every day. so not good for afro hair.

Hello Parents,

I've been trawling web for this area. Found a great blog. looks like the website is still being developed, but the blog is rather interesting. would like to know the products shes using on her kids.

franch · 10/05/2011 15:37

Seems I was wrong about Herbal Essences; they are paraben-free. Just need a swimmer's shampoo with no parabens now; I've been using the l'Oreal Kids one till now, which is good but has parabens in it.

I got some Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner btw, which is lovely but yes, has parabens. Anita Grant's whipped butter is gorgeous and all-natural, but a bit greasy for my liking.

Delilah123 · 14/05/2011 20:19

Here's your swimmers shampoo, unless you've already found one. this site is a breath of fresh 'hair' - sorry! When do they go live?

great video from the website i'm following

jjojo · 23/05/2011 16:48

Hello! I have mixed hair which is really dry and frizzy and the only products that I have found that work are products by a trichologist called Teresa Angelina Richardson who has a clinic in Fulham called the Fulham Scalp & Hair Clinic.
She makes all the products herself and she is an afro hair specialist.
www.fulhamscalphairclinic.com
I use her Leave-in Protector on my hair after washing it and then i twist my hair around my fingers and it stays as a curly as it dries naturally.

I also have to use the deep conditioning mask which is a really good conditioner that i put on my hair and then put a plastic bag over my hair so that it steams for 20mins.

There are other products but these two really do the trick and my hair is in a much better condition as a result.

They are also all really gentle so I use them on my daughter too.

Bane · 06/06/2011 12:18

Hi I have mixed raced daughters and my 3 year old rocks herself to sleep and the right side of her hair is starting to fall out (its gone really short) HELP what should I do?

buddhamum · 08/06/2011 17:03

Hi Bane,
Can you say a little about what your haircare routine is at the moment for your girls, please? I would love to be able to help you. Please, don't worry.

Bane · 08/06/2011 17:45

Hi buddhamum and everyone

I use Dark and Lovely products on their hair every day and nite, I don't comb it when its dry, I only wash it once or twice a week and plait it at nite. I have been straightening their hair with the irons twice a week but making sure I've been using the heat protection oilve oil hair serum, but my 3 years old hair started to fall out before this HELP???

skrumle · 10/06/2011 18:44

Bane does she pull at her hair? my DS sucked his fingers and tugged at the hair on his right and was giving himself a total bald patch - just wondered if the rocking was a similar comfort thing?

Delilah123 · 13/06/2011 05:12

I'm not sure the heat irons are a good thing on a 3-yr old. my little one of a similar age still has sections of her baby hair. Childrens hair is still changing well into their teens.

Give it a break for a while, use co-washes on her, and use gentle styling.

Delilah123 · 13/06/2011 05:14

Sorry Bane, forgot to add. If the rocking isn't helping things, give her something silky to lay her head on. This will reduce the friction on that side of her head and the pillowcase.

Satin or silk are best, and try and use a natural oil in her hair at night.

Good luck!
