Oooh hi Mars, you haven't been round much lately! I have to tell you that your lemon drizzle cake recipe is fabulous, this cake is one of my faves and always a great success with adults and children! Smile

MarsLady · 03/02/2011 21:42

Pleased to help!

franch... what can I say? I'm having so much fun on this postnatal job. Breastfeeding is going well so all she needs is to be fed and put back to bed.

I'm experimenting with different foods (basically see what's in the fridge and whack it together into something edible). I like to start them off with an LDC... they tend to extend the contract then lol Grin

Seriously though... loving it. Sorry to make you crave...but you know where the recipe is.

franch · 04/02/2011 11:15

So glad you found your vocation Mars. Where the heck were you when I was a new mum?!!

Yes I do feel a baking session coming on .....

And lunch with Mars ASAP .......

KnackeredOne · 08/02/2011 01:22

Franch,

Your headscarf probably won't stay on if you're lying on a cotton pillowcase. There'll be too much friction between the 2 fabrics.

You could try changing your pillowcase to a satin one (there is something to be said for them - trust me!)

Not only is the haedscarf less likely to fall off (make sure you tie at front), but even if it does, you'll do less frizz/knot damage to hair as it'll still be lying on a favourable fabric.

My DD's is pink and she loves it!

franch · 09/02/2011 12:51

Thanks Knackered. DH's bandanna thingy stays on ok on a cotton pillowcase but, coincidentally, I'm just ordering some new pillowcases right this second so will see if I can get satin instead of cotton.

KnackeredOne · 09/02/2011 19:25

Hi Franch - funny isn't it..I think it would be so easy to go to bed wearing more head gear than we would in the day...Smile

KnackeredOne · 11/02/2011 06:15

Morning everyone,

I was just wondering if you'd had similar experiences to myself with my own hair and my children's

I've found that until recently it's only really become acceptable to leave my 'crazy' hair alone and not have to relax it - although in all honesty i think i put that pressure on myself. I remember having a DP once who loved my hair free and would often yank my scrunchy out of my hair, which drove me crazy!

Also have you ever found that when you ring or go into a regular high street hairdresser and ask if there's anyone to help with mine or my DD hair, they run a mile? I'm not sure what's so difficult, sometimes it's only a case of a wash and set or a trim. I called Tony & Guys once, thinking from all their fashion shots I'd seen in magazines that they could help, and was told in no uncertain terms that they don't deal with 'your hair type'. It's just a pain having to travel to London all the time to get good service.

And finally, when I have been to Black Hair salons, I need to book the entire day off. i spend most of my time sitting there waiting for someone to see to me, getting cold under the hairdryer, worrying if a treatment has been left on too long, sitting with a cold sopping wet towel around my shoulders. Once i just asked them to rinse my hair out, paid and left, i just couldn't stand it any longer - 4 hours and counting was just way outta line.

OK rant over! Have a great weekend.

mammya · 11/02/2011 10:53

Hi KnackeredOne, I've never experienced the pressure to relax my dd's hair. It was only suggested by one Afro hairdresser that I should let them "texturise" it, which I was told is a milder form of relaxing, and so I refused!

To be honest I've never tried a high street hairdresser for her, although I had a mobile hairdresser who assured me he could cut curly hair, but he made a real mess of dd's hair.

Black hair salons: I feel your pain! I sometimes take dd to get her hair cornrowed before a holiday (so we can have a holiday from the hair as well!) as when it is professionally done it lasts much longer. Takes forever! Very expensive also...

KnackeredOne · 11/02/2011 14:39

Hi Mammya,

Oh yes..I've had all the braiding nightmares for myself - glad don't do it anymore. Oh my neck, backache and sheer boredom. Used to get braids at Uni and when first started working, also when I was pregnant. Although I have to say that had such awful pregnancies, one day my hubby came home to find me with the scariest hair he'd ever seen in his life.

I'd got so down and depressed about everything that I'd taken it out on my poor hair - got the scissors out of the kitchen drawer, and hacked at my hair - grab and chop!

Took me ages to grow it back to some semblance of a hair style.

No, I would never do anything chemically to my little DDs hair either. Her hair is a lot finer than mine.

I've been texturising mine for a few years and boy do i regrat that now - it's thin, limp, tired and just looks like a wiry bird nest, and I had BIG hair naturally! Anyway, growing it all out now.

I think that's the difference with the smaller and the more professional salons. A lot of the smaller ones are missing a trick. Treat your customer well, quickly and we'll come back, rather than dread the trip.

I go to Junior Green in London, bish-bash-bosh, lovely hair, products in my bag, and I'm off - Happy bunny. Can't be that hard can it!

mammya · 12/02/2011 23:13

Where's Junior Green? I moved out of London a few years ago, and have taken my dd to the nearest big town's black hair salon, but the braiding wasn't very good, it didn't last very long, and it was VERY expensive. We found a nice salon near her dad's in London, but I if you recommend Junior Green and it's convenient for us, we'll give it a try.

I shaved my head when I was pregnant... so you're not alone there with the scary pregnant do! Smile

KnackeredOne · 14/02/2011 10:15

Hi there Mammya,

I would highly recommend him, and his wife Joy Miller.

39 Knightsbridge London. 020 752 0620

He actually runs a Mixed-Race Masterclass, and is just fantastic. I've been going to him for 5 years now. I know Angela Griffin goes there too.

Don't be put off by the add and credentials, he's not silly with his prices!

Tell him the lady from GIDORE recommended you. (funny pronunciation I know!)

Good luck x

franch · 14/02/2011 10:47

Following KO's advice about parabens, I'm looking through the TightlyCurly site to see which paraben-free shampoos and conditioners she recommends. I can't be bothered ordering online/going to specialist shops, so will be trying whatever I can get from the supermarket first. (Up till now I've been using L'Oreal and Herbal Essences which work beautifully on my DDs.)

I'm going to try:
Conditioners: Frizz Ease; TresSemme
Shampoo: ...... argh, none of the ones she recommends is available at my supermarket ....

franch · 14/02/2011 10:54

..... Will try Pantene and Frizz Ease shampoos and report back ......

mammya · 14/02/2011 22:34

Thanks KO, it's not really an area of London I visit very often, but I'll keep it in mind, although the prices are rather higher than what I'm used to pay! Perhaps for a special treat...

We actually found a salon near dd's dad's place that is quite good, dd said they didn't hurt her which is a first!

franch · 15/02/2011 21:07

Where's that, mammya?

mammya · 16/02/2011 08:03

In NE London, Stamford Hill. It's a little salon on the corner of St Ann's Road and the A10.

franch · 16/02/2011 13:44

Ah, too far for me. :( Thanks mammya

eurocommuter · 16/02/2011 14:35

Helo all
Has anyone been to the Aveda institute in Covent Garden. The lady who does afro type hair is very good and I love their product, for both myself and DC, but I think she is part time Which is a bit incoveniencing for work hours. And as she is the only one you have to book in Advance. You will never have to wait though.

Their prices are not that bad bad.

KnackeredOne · 18/02/2011 01:58

Hi Mammya,

Glad you found somewhere - just realised that you were specifically asking for braiding! doh!

Another sleepless night - kids look so peaceful - wish I could sleep like them!

franch · 20/02/2011 13:22

KO - what does Junior Green charge for kids? I've been looking at his prices online but kids aren't mentioned.

Galdem · 20/02/2011 13:25

Right, back to the drawing board. The conditioner/water spray thing isn't working at all. My DD's hair is drier than ever. It seems that it literally cannot be styled unless it is soaking wet and coated in conditioner, but this is SO time consuming to do every morning before nursery and in cold weather I don't want her running around with wet hair.Boo.

Any suggestions? What am I doing wrong?

mammya · 20/02/2011 14:10

Hi Galdem, can you tell us what it is you're doing? Sorry if you've explained already, this thread is quite long now!

I'm doing the tightly curly method that franch described in this thread, it's working really well.

mammya · 20/02/2011 14:12

Having re-read your post, in my experience, yes, that sort of hair is impossible to style when it is dry! That's just the way it is I'm afraid...

Galdem · 20/02/2011 14:17

I pretty much do all of what the girl in the clip does@mammya.

I can't braid/corn row, but I do carefully tie DD's hair back in two plaits or a bun before bed to stop it from tangling. It is easily styled when wet, coated with conditioner and combed out, but in the morning, when dry, I have to start at zero again (i.e. wet, condition, comb) to re-style it, or it just turns into a frizzy, dry mess.

Her hair is not quite like the girl in that clips, btw. It is shorter, very fine/European texture, but narrow curls that get tighter the further down the hair shaft you go, iyswim.

I think I have tried every method and product on this thread in the last year or so, to no avail Sad
