With Afro hair, the trick is to keep the scalp clean and the hair moisturised, all the time. The hair structure does not allow it to retain moisture so it needs help. My tips are as follows:
Dilute a small amount of conditioner in water into a spray bottle. Spritz the hair with this regularly and especially before combing if styling whilst dry.
Wash and detangle the hair in sections- either three or four and use a wide tooth comb but finger detangle first.
Invest in a good leave in conditioner. My girls use Shea Moisture Black JCO leave-in. Layer some oil on top of this, concentrating on the ends to lock the moisture in.
You don’t really need to add anything to her scalp other than keeping it clean and avoiding product build up but if her scalp is dry, try spritzing with water and using a light oil of your choice sparingly on top. You don’t want to clog her scalp which can cause all sorts of issues. Avoid heavy oils like JCO on scalps, I prefer sweet almond, jojoba or plain old extra virgin. Some people swear by coconut oil but I find it too heavy.
Find a protective style that helps protects her ends, in other words tuck them away, especally when the weather is cold and dry.
Avoid using too much heat on the hair, air dry where possible. Use a t-shirt to dry her hair rather than towel.
Wash with a good sulphate free shampoo -this doesn’t strip moisture from her hair. However, if she has product build up, she may need to do a cleansing wash to every so often which you can do with any shampoo really.
Every now and then, do a deep condition with heat (you can make your own by adding oils of your choice to a decent conditioner or buy one). This really helps with manageability.
Look for moisture attracting ingredients in shampoos and conditioners see here www.curlynikki.com/2011/05/hair-conditioner-ingredients.html You don’t necessary need to buy only products specifically targeted to Afro hair, go by what’s in the ingredients and you may be surprised.
Establish a simple but effective regime. Ours goes like this:
Once a week - wash, condition, leave in conditioner and oil to seal.
Every 2-3 days (or more or less depending on dryness level) - spritz with water/ conditioner mixture, add leave in and seal with oil
Once a month- wash, deep condition, leave-in and seal
Sleep with a satin scarf or bonnet or get a satin pillowcase for her to sleep on so she retains moisture at night.
Check out YouTube for tutorials- there are literally hundreds if not thousands but don’t become a product junkie, it’s a waste of money. In my experience, it’s more technique not product though a good product will help. You need to find what works for her hair.
Teach her how to take care of her hair properly. Show her how gorgeous properly cared for and maintained Afro and mixed hair is. Teach her to love her curls, she will thank you for it when she is older.
