If you can please help me im slightly confused between these. i have put my name on the register with the council for a property as i have no where to live and 30 weeks pregnant, (i recently split up with my ex partner) the council have told me i could wait 2 years which is no good to me. they said i could go into a hostel in the meantime but obviously i dont want that.

Someone mentioned to me about the housing association and getting a house with them, could someone please exlain how this works and how would i go about it please?

If you are on the local councils housing list then usually the will nominate you to all local housing associations too, so then if a house becomes available with them, the council can put you forward for it.

I am not sure how well this works though as I don't know anyone who got a house with a h/a that way.

The only other thing you can do is too approach the h/a's yourself BUT alot of them will say that if you are already on the councils list then they have to nominate you.

Do you want to stay in the area you are in now ?

Yeah it is always worth approaching them directly anyway. I rang all my local ones even though most of them then said I couldn't apply.

nutcracker · 13/05/2005 21:30

thanks for the advice rickman, my parents house isnt very big and i have nicked one of my brother bedrooms (he is 22 years old) and is having to sleep on the sofa every night, i just feel sorry for him. i know what you mean though i will need them around when the baby is born. i cant think of anything worse than going into a hostel. any other tips on the council? they have told me i am in the top 40% on the register but there are 510 families waiting. Sounds as though i will be waiting a long time doesnt it?

I would advise to go for hostel as well. You will get more points because you will be considered a homeless family, I f you stay at your parents you will only get points for overcrowding. Homeless families are a priority and there is a big push to get people out of hostels/B&Bs.
I work for H/A in London, the only way people get houses with us is to be nominated by the council. I dont know if this is the same for the rest of the country.
Good Luck to you. Remember your baby will have no memory of being in a hostel .
I lived in a one bedroom flat with mum and brother for the first 4 years of my life, before we got a house, everything will work out eventually.

I am having to go on the homeless list because of problem neighbours (see my neghbours are a**eholes... thread) and was told today that as soon as I have a letter from the police and doctor I can go to any council in Herts or anwhere in the country, if we wish, so if you can get on the homeless list you should have the same options, though I could be wrong. It might be because we would be fleeing violent.
