Doing about 35 in a 30 zone? What should I expect?

Did a camera flash? Are you sure? I think you're allowed 10% over plus a bit, so you might be ok.

Otherwise probably a fine and 3 points I imagine.

Indiechick · 05/12/2008 10:01

There was a policeman with a hairdryer type thing, laughing at me I might add.

Yes, if it flashed and there was film in the camera it would be a £60 fine and 3 points on your licence.

Indiechick · 05/12/2008 10:13

Bugger, that'll learn me won't it!

hey ,that happened to me mid october last year.....policeman with hairdryer leaped out and pointed it at me!!!
still waiting for the comeback!!!
never received anything

plus3frenchhens · 05/12/2008 13:58

depends on how kind they are! You have been caught if he was laughing! so £60 and 3 penalty points, or depends where you are, you might get offered a speed awareness course for £80, but no fine or points. Good luck

MumsMoneyTips · 10/12/2008 11:27

Sometimes the cameras flash but nothing gets followed up. I think you get a small grace of a few miles over the speed limit.

Fingers crossed for you!

sarah573 · 10/12/2008 22:13

If it was a camera then you will (IF you were speeding and IF there was film in it) get notifcation in the post within 14 days.

If it was a policeman with a hairdryer thinngy then the likelyhood is you would have been stopped further down the road by another police officer and issued a ticket. If you weren't then you are probably ok (although you COULD still receive something in the post).

The margin of error is 10% + 2 so in a 30 that means you are usually ok until 35. Its also worth remembering that speedos are usually set very slighly under the real speed, so if was reading 35 you were probably only doing 33.

Fingers crossed you'll be fine!!

Hulababy · 10/12/2008 22:15

£60 and 3 points on license.

Was it a static camera? If so it may not have had flm in. I was flashed by one a couple of winters ago at about 1am one morning. Never heard anything.

DoNotsAntlers · 10/12/2008 22:17

actually the 10% +2 is a but of a myth.

I know someone that got prosecuted for 34mph (2 people on teh same night actually.

whomovedmychocolate · 10/12/2008 22:22

If it's 35 in a 30 zone you'll probably be offered a speeding awareness course which takes three hours and is dead boring, but avoids the points. However the 'course fee' is the same price as the fine.

I'm feeling slightly robbed here - have never spotted a laughing policeman leaping out from behind a bush brandishing a hairdryer. It's not fair, I tell you.

I did the speed awareness course and there were people there who had been doing 32, 33 mph so the 10% thing is a myth. You only get offered the workshop if -it's in your area, you haven't had a speeding fine in the last 3 years, and you were doing under 40 in a 30 zone. The one I did also cost £60. I actually found it very interesting and it has changed my views on speed. I was also within my first 2 years of having my license and if you get 4 points they take away your license.

Tommy · 21/12/2008 09:19

I did the driver awareness course a few weeks ago. It cost me £74 but I didn't have to pay the fine nor did I get the points. It was really worth doing as Kat has said. If they offer that to you, definitely take it.

bollockbrainASSofBETHLEHEM · 21/12/2008 09:27

60 quid and 3 points

crispyduck · 21/12/2008 09:29

I was doing 36 in a 30mph
£60 and 3 points

eltham · 26/12/2008 19:14

..just to hijack (sorry) but what diffrence does 3 points make in terms of your car insurance?

frasersmummy · 26/12/2008 19:23

your insurance only goes up when you have 6 points or more ..

the insurance co set premiums on the basis of 3 points or less

the 10% is not a myth as such. The law states that a car speedo must be accurate to within 10% so if you get caught doing 33 you can argue that your speedo showed 30 at the time..
however if it goes to court the onus is on you to prove that your speedo is out by 10%

VirginBoffinMum · 26/12/2008 19:34

You can ask for details that the PC has calibrated the machine used to detect speeding properly. Often they don't line them up against a fixed object like they are supposed to before starting, which makes the readings inaccurate.

You can hope the post is delayed because of Xmas, because if the details of the offence don't arrive within a set number of days then it all becomes invalid.

Failing that, hope that yours is one of the areas where they do a speeding awareness course!

pipsy76 · 26/12/2008 19:59

based on no legal knowledge whatsoever- I was always under the impression that if a policeman with a hairdryer caught you speeding then they had to stop you there and then to fine you (have been flashed by a policeman with a dryer myself a night, oe er!)

nannyL · 27/12/2008 19:30

virginboffinmum delayed post makes no difference...

i thought i was caught back in the summer, and spoke to my mums friend, a lawyer whose specialitly is 'getting people off of their speeding crimes'

its the day they post it that counts in law, not that day you recieve it....

i was telling him i must be ok as the event was 3 weeks ago and nothing had arrived and he assured me that it wasnt necessarily over yet

(but i never got anything)

VirginBoffinMum · 27/12/2008 19:34

Nonono!
In the last postal strike this was an issue!

frasersmummy · 27/12/2008 19:42

virginboffin

I have to agree with nannyL...

i got caught in a hire car and thought I had got away with it cos it had been 3 weeks but the police of course had contacted the hire co who gave them the driver details and then they contacted me..

The whole thing took nearly a month....

And on the flip side.. you only get so long to reply to say you accept the judgement. If you dont accept they take you to court. So a delay in you receiving the original letter can cause you more hastle and money!!
