Can the back take my overdraft away? I keep hearing stories about overdrafts disappearing overnight, and I can repay it and be £2k in the black on the 20th Jan, but we are stuck until then. I am petrified. What do you think?

No, you'll be fine.

MadreInglese · 26/11/2008 12:19

Speak to your bank and explain your situation

triffictits · 26/11/2008 12:20

No, they wont ask for it back I am sure - and they have to give you time to pay it back if they do ask, I am sure.

bellavita · 26/11/2008 12:21

Forewarned is forearmed imo - easier to speak to the bank now and let them know.

Pawslikepaddington · 26/11/2008 12:22

I'm really scared of speaking to the bank in case they def take it away, as I will have told them I am broke. I've always been a good bank customer and never caused any probs, and I have proof of the income that will be coming in, but I don't want to end up homeless by the end of xmas.

Pawslikepaddington · 26/11/2008 12:23

So do you think I should go in and ask them to guarantee that they won't take it away until then, and then I can pay it back in full and they can do whatever they want from then on?

OP posts:
Pawslikepaddington · 26/11/2008 12:25

I haven't explained this properly have I? I'm in such a tizz! I am £12 in the black at the mo, but need the overdraft to pay rent and mortgage over xmas. Then I can repay it all in Jan, IYSWIM.

OP posts:
bellavita · 26/11/2008 12:26

I would make an appointment to see someone rather than telling them over the phone. Then you can take your proof of income in with you.

Whatever they agree to, I would ask them to put it in writing for you.

bellavita · 26/11/2008 12:28

I hope you get it sorted..........deep breath and ring them now to make that appointment

PhantomOfTheChocolateCakeAvena · 26/11/2008 12:28

They don't normally just take the facility away, I think that you seriously have to piss them off. I've had my overdraft for 5 years . They tend to increase it rather than decrease it.

mabanana · 26/11/2008 12:29

God, I LIVE on my overdraft! Have done for years. Cannot recall a month when I didn't use it. Banks just don't take away your overdraft for nothing. You are panicking over nothing IMO. Why are you suddenly so scared?

mabanana · 26/11/2008 12:30

And you certainly aren't going to be HOMELESS you nana!

Pawslikepaddington · 26/11/2008 12:31

That's ok then-I have got a rather substantial one, and I do tend to use it and then pay it back immediately, so they have no reason to take it away as they make their interest but know that they will get it back within a week or so, but this is the first time I have really needed it, so am rather scared. There was someone on here a while ago saying hers had just vanished overnight, and everyone was saying banks could do this etc, so am now v scared! . And it's Halifax.

It feels like we will be ! I rent a house at uni, but am paying the mortgage on our real house too, which is too far away to live in (we have a renter now though, hurrah!! Money worries over from mid Jan!), so am worried if I screw up we will lose both IYSWIM.

OP posts:
goingfor3 · 26/11/2008 12:34

As someone else said they are more likely to increase it rather than decrease. Go and speak to them if you are worried but the chances of it disapearing are very slim.

Pawslikepaddington · 26/11/2008 12:35

I love you ladies, you always make me feel so much better! I have managed to get through a whole packet of foam shrimps in my worry though-god I feel sick!

OP posts:
PhantomOfTheChocolateCakeAvena · 26/11/2008 12:35

Don't worry. They make money out of their cusomers being overdrawn. Seriously, I've had mine for 5 years, twatwest just keep increasing it.

mabanana · 26/11/2008 12:36

It would take a LOT more than one missed payment for you to lose your house - really it would. And even that isn't going to happen. You are a great customer - your bank isn't going to want to lose you right now!

MissClavel · 26/11/2008 12:37

They won't take it away overnight. Our bank (Smile) tried to take away the overdraft on our joint account last year - they gave us a month or so to pay it back (we use other accounts for pretty much everything and this one is always either overdrawn or has nothing in it, so I think they'd become a bit sick of it sitting there in the red all the time).

We called them and asked to keep it. They immediately gave us another 6 months' overdraft just like that. Then before that was up, we called again and they extended it for another year. It was no problem at all - so don't worry.

I am self employed and get paid about 4 times a year, so my accounts veer wildly between being at the bottom of overdraft limits and massively in credit. I think banks understand that if you point it out to them.

Honestly, you will be fine

Pawslikepaddington · 26/11/2008 12:37

Oh Ma and avena - am virtually shaking your hands in glee, thank you both so much-I've been so stupidly worried over this!

Well done ladies, in less than 20 mins you have made this lady very happy

Pawslikepaddington · 26/11/2008 12:49

Yes, you should go behind the mn genius bar!

don't worry, I'm with Halifax too and they've given me a ridiculously large overdraft, around 3k. Although I try not to go overdrawn at all I seem to have done a few times (summer hols and month before xmas!) and never have any problems with them threatening to take it away.

Pawslikepaddington · 26/11/2008 13:04

Hehe, Halifax love their customers don't they-god bless our great big socking overdrafts! Would never take out a loan-no no no no no-I refuse to get anything I have to pay for monthly, as I only get money 3 times a year!
