Personal debt, not including the mortgage. How much is yours?

Like many people in the UK, I'm working out how to get through the recession. I currently have one loan (taken to pay for a training course). £2,500. It feels bad enough. Have cleared credit card and am working out how not to go overdrawn this and every month.

How about you lot?

zero, apart from my student loans - I graduated 12 years ago and have never earnt enough (£25k) to have to start repaying them. Dh and I always strive to live within our means and save up for things rather than borrow money.

Sounds like you've done good clearing your cc debt!

expatinscotland · 02/11/2008 14:52

about £3500-£4000 depending on how into overdraft we are.

2cats2many · 02/11/2008 14:54

Zero..........but we have a HUGE mortgage.

goblinvalley · 02/11/2008 14:55

zero - dh is an absolute stickler for not spending money we don't have.

beeny · 02/11/2008 14:56

Whats your huge mortgage

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 02/11/2008 14:56

about £1500 from "lenders" - plus £1800 to my parents

Lilymaid · 02/11/2008 14:58

Only what is on this month's credit card bill - which will be paid off by the due date. Never been overdrawn except when bank made mistakes.

NDTH - that sucks .

I'm fortunate that all most of the debt that was taken on when exH and I were together was in his name, so it's him that's struggling to pay now, while I'm slowly but surely reducing my debts (well Ihaven't started paying back my parents......was going to pay it in installments from next year but as things stand I'm just going to save each month and put it in a seperate account then send them a cheque for the full amount once I've got it.......)

expatinscotland · 02/11/2008 15:11

same here, notdoing.

our debt is from when the tax credits office cocked up and we had to live on credit cards till DH found a job to work round mine after they cut us off with nothing.

then we won teh appeal they gave us £100 in compensation.

and now we've had to put the gas bill on credit.

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 02/11/2008 15:16

exH has personal debts well into 5 figures.

TBH I think he'd be better of going bankrupt, his credit rating is already totally and utterly screwed, this house (with the current housing market) is almost certainly going to end up being repossessed off him, and the way prices are dropping he's still going to end up owing the bank money - then there's all his other debts too, at least one of which he's behind with payments on.

He's got almost nothing to lose now, but debts spiralling out of control.

Zero - except cc bill which is paid in full each month automatically.
But we have 3 mortgages totalling 310k in debt...

expatinscotland · 02/11/2008 15:19

yep, that's what we got.

bastards.

and because we make so little, we have next to no chance of ever paying all that off.

nowt apart from my 2.5k student loan debt, which I will hopefully be paying off at Christmas.

Twasn't ever thus though - until recently I was utterly shit with money and it's only been a lucky combination of circumstances that have allowed us to reach this point. I have never had a credit card though, knew I could never trust myself with one, so that helped.

expatinscotland · 02/11/2008 15:25

i get so damned sick of all those Daily Mail types carping on about how everyone's in debt because of spending on holidays, gadgets and bullshit like that.

i wish everyone who says that a mile in our shoes.

actually, i hope they can keep my shoes.

i'll be glad to swap and see how face they change their tune.

expatinscotland · 02/11/2008 15:26

'Expat- because I'm in debt management, part of the agreement is that the interest is frozen so that I am actually paying off capital.'

We don't have a problem making the minimum payments, NDTH.

So we our credit score is actually really good.

We're used to it.

We know we won't clear it.

C'est la vie.

Things could always be worse, as we all know.

We don't have a mortgage because we privately rent, so we can be more flexible with regards to housing, especially now as in this area it's shaping up to be good for the private renter.

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 02/11/2008 15:30

have to confess the £1500 on my 2 CC's has mostly been feckless spending in the past (although now under control).

The £1800 from my parents is my half of the money that exH and I owe them from when they helped us pay to go to Zimbabwe 2yrs ago. With the way things were going even then it was apparent that it was probably the only chance we'd get ot take DS1 and 2 to visit exH's family. Things are so shit out there now that I can't imagine, even if I had the money, being able to take them again in the foreseeable future so am grateful we had what looks like was probably the only opportuniy we'll ever have for exH's family to meet my DS's.
