Sainsbury's £68.25 - Lidl £39.83 - blimey!

Yes, I'm bored, but I'm also strapped for cash

Went to my local Lidl today, out of curiosity. Spent £39.83 - then came home and compared to Sainsbury's online - saved almost £30!!

The meat was the only thing I wasn't be crazy about, but the rest - think I might be converted. The fruit and veg was actually pretty good, imo. I even bought fresh figs for 19p each! Big treat tonight then, figs, honey and double cream... delish.

Yes but it's no surprise is it?

Sainsbury's have ridiculous pricing policies.

Well, it is a bit of a surprise to me...hence the thread

Oh. OK then. I bow to your greater supermarket savvy

Seriously though?

Is this why so many people still shop at sainsbury's, M&S and Twatrose? Through ignorance?

I'm glad you found the light Snaf

Notyummy · 25/09/2008 13:22

ALDI all the way for me. I used to work for them, and the stuff is good quality and mainly sourced from exactly the same places as the large supermarkets buy from. I also shop i Tesco occasionally, and Waitrose to get 'differnt' stuff, as neither ALDI or LIDL stock a broad enough range of items to allow me to get everything on my shopping lists.

Come over to the cheap side everyone!

Creole · 25/09/2008 13:23

Sadly yes, it is ignorance...my friend completely dismisses it because it's 'foreign'...
So I went in there the other day, and was surprised to find so many items from over here and extremely cheap.

GypsyMoth · 26/09/2008 11:13

i'm converted to lidl too. and i always used to be a bit of a "snob" when it came to this sort of place

i recommend....lidl potato salad. delicious.
and their wines are quite good too.

great deals on pantene and herbal essences shampoo's and conditioners right now too. and strangely, their loo roll.....with a pattern, and scented,4 pack for £1.40 i think it is,and quality is good!

Snaf · 26/09/2008 11:18

Yes, I bought the Herbal Essences stuff

I knew it would be cheaper, obviously, but was surprised by just how much. And I think there is a lot of brand snobbery which puts people off - but most of the brands that I go for simply out of habit (Heinz, Hellmann's, Tropicana/Innocent ) are all there anyway.

I recently discovered Aldi dairyfine yoghurt chocolate. Its to die for and only a pound a bar. Also Lacura eye cream - £2.00 and in surveys better than some of the really expensive brands

FourArms · 28/09/2008 19:15

I've been shopping at Morrisons for about a year now, and didn't notice a massive change from Tesco in terms of price. However, I did a few shops at Sainsburys last month and was very at what I spent. The fact they have a massive home / clothes / toys section means I quite often spend £50+ in there on stuff that I didn't realise I needed

Back to Morrisons for me! Although should probably shop at Aldi/Lidl for a week to make up for Sainsburys!

Lilymaid · 28/09/2008 19:18

I don't have a Lidl or Aldi anywhere near me and I shop in Waitrose, but I would much rather shop in Lidl than in Tesco or Asda, which sell poor quality food.

CherryChapstick · 28/09/2008 19:19

I was a Morrison fanatic until June. Since have been a Lidl convert.
I save at least £15 a week and get extras now that I couldn't afford before.
The meat is fine especially their cold meat which is better than any I have tried so far.
I tried Aldi, still pretty good and I'll use it again but prefer Lidl.

MissusH · 28/09/2008 19:22

I'm an Aldi girl too - DH raves about the wafer thin ham (must admit it is a whole lot tastier than the main supermarkets offerings!!)

I mormally get what I can from there and then only need to get a few bits from Tesco.

The cheapside is the place to be...

AbbeyA · 28/09/2008 19:25

I haven't got an Aldi but I love Lidl. You have to choose what you get but they have great savings. Not long ago I got a pineapple for 58p. I am looking forward to Christmas when they get all the lovely German gingerbread etc at cheap prices.

weblette · 28/09/2008 19:25

If there were one round here I'd be shopping there like a flash. So with a choice of only Sainsbury, Tesco or Waitrose, Sainsbury gets it every time.

littlestrawberry · 28/09/2008 19:31

I love Lidl. Great for fruit and veg, jars of roasted peppers, olives, cornichons, that sort of thing.

Also their chorizo is nice and their 'Italian style ham' proscuittio type ham only alot cheaper.

I will have to pay a visit-they didn't have it last week!

hippipotami · 28/09/2008 19:45

If only there was an Aldi / Lidl closer to me
Am forced to shop at Sainsbury adn I hate it!

LunarSea · 28/09/2008 20:51

Ooh - Christmas stuff. Must call in sometime and have a look. Unfortunately the one they're very conveniently building near here won't be open this side of Christmas, so it's a bit of a trek to get there. Wonder when they'll have frozen geese in that we've had every year for the past few Christmases?

mamadiva · 28/09/2008 21:00

I shop at Asda/Tesco normally because everyone says mot is processed in aldi/lidl but I might give it a go this week as am on a tight budget .

Although DP does work in Walkers shortbread and they supply Lidl's shortbread as well as M&S so makes you wonder who else does doesn't it.

andyrobo237 · 28/09/2008 21:02

Lidl is the nearest supermarket to my house - walking distance! The next nearest (still walking distance) is Iceland - I am so spoilt!!

CherryChapstick · 28/09/2008 21:15

Lidl's stollen is the greatest and it is now in stock. yay!
And now I know why the shortbread is so good too.

Ambi · 28/09/2008 21:50

I understand but dislike the snobbery towards lidl and aldi (I used to be brainwashed against the 'cheap' supermarkets too), but it's just the brand names which we've been consumerised to believe are the best. I prefer Lidl to any other supermarket as I think that the european food is far better quality than the british equivilents. The fruit and veg is better too. It's no fuss shopping because you don't spend ages choosing which tin of tomatoes to go for.

I love lidl and I'm glad people are beginning to get that it's pretty good too, although I wish they wouldn't as our local is getting a bit too busy
