Yes, I'm bored, but I'm also strapped for cash

Went to my local Lidl today, out of curiosity. Spent £39.83 - then came home and compared to Sainsbury's online - saved almost £30!!

The meat was the only thing I wasn't be crazy about, but the rest - think I might be converted. The fruit and veg was actually pretty good, imo. I even bought fresh figs for 19p each! Big treat tonight then, figs, honey and double cream... delish.

I love Nettos, we don't have a car and only have twatrose and netto near us, I will never go in twatrose again even if they paid me and their customer services are carp!! The staff ponce about the store and i've seen the 'security' guards throwing a man out because he 'looked' like a shoplifter, they had no evidence of this though!! [hhmmm]

does the fruit and veg last long? i've found fruit and veg from aldi and lidl doesn't.

It is over 10 miles away - bit far to trapse for the weekly shop a twenty mile round trip..

Lidl stollen is great but they do different ones: check ingredients and get the one with BUTTER.

nappyaddict · 03/11/2008 15:20

Is there anything else you can do to make it a more worthwhile trip.we go 10 miles to tesco as opposed to the nearest one 5 miles away cos we factor in a swimming trip or a trip to see relatives at the same time.

lidl do fab hake in breadcrumbs (frozen). MInd you today one of my peppers in a bag of 3 has mould at the top and a plum in the punnet was mouldy too ; ( . Their fruit and veg last for ages and at the mo everything seems to be on special.

OH, and the maris piper spuds, in the black bag are the best potatoes I have had in a long long time and make the best roasties ever!

Avoiding grim....I haven't found anything 'made up' to be very good, but 'ingredients' are fine.Toilet rolls, tissues (the 'cosmetic wipes' ones), detergent, J cloths things are good. Some bread is Ok, ours is from northern Ireland. Some fruit and veg goes off quickly - but that happens to me wherever it is from.

Bienchen · 03/11/2008 19:44

Personally, I don't like the bread much but this is not a big problem as I make bread most of the time (just feel like a change some times). Jam, tea bags, tinned tomatoes, sundried tomatoes, etc all fine. Love their smoked black forest ham and of course all the gingerbread. Choice of cheese and yoghurt is limited, so I still use other supermarkets. Lidl don't stock unsalted butter I believe or maybe it is just our branch. Ready made cakes I avoid, since a lot still contain hydrogenated fats. I got a lot of Christmas food last week, they stocked whole frozen lobsters for £5 which will make lobster ravioli and whole crabs for £4 I think. Also, Formil washing powder is fine and W5 cleaning stuff.

nappyaddict · 07/11/2008 13:02

Do they stock raw beetroot? I can't seem to get it anywhere but the market 6 miles away.

lilacclaire · 07/11/2008 16:25

Haven't been to Lidl for a while, but last time was in got packets of sausages that had (if memory serves) something like 80% meat content for £1 !!!
They were bloody delicious as well, and Im choosey about meat.

If I was in the UK I would shop at Waitrose as it is sooo nice - I miss it out here.

There is a Lidl, but it is not as good as the one I went to in Germany last year and the fruit and veg choice is fairly restrictive, as it is in most supermarkets here.
