Has anybody done research yet on who's offering best rates/least charges?

Just don't know where to take my cheque when it finally arrives

wanted to go with hsbc but they only seem to do the stakeholder option

Haven't decided yet in fact haven't looked yet will be interested in reccomendations. Can't have you talking to yourself

I have decided on finding an all-share index-tracking fund (putting it in shares) .. I haven't done any research yet though sorry .. anybody find any trackers yet?

its a long-term investment, it has to be locked up .. stick it away in shares IMO .. its the best option over the long-term

Britannia and Abbey both offer share tracking and stakeholder options as well if you want to check them out

ahh but then 3 years before they turn 18 you put it in something safer like a savings account

This is driving me crazy, been up for hours this morning looking at the options available, still haven't got a clue what to do with it! Have no experience of saving at all, suppose it's a good way to get us all into it.

Twiglett, I hadn't realised one could swap to a different account type. Back to the drawing board then for me I wish they'd offer something like the big ISAs... part cash part shares

As I am a control freak...if Iam going to save large amounts for ds, then I want to decide that it gets spent on, say, university fees, rather than a kilo of coke. So we have decided to stick it in the Ipswich BS cash account and forget about it. Ds will then have something I won't feel twitchy about him squandering at 18.

I've got the cheque and no idea where to put it either.

I think I have decided to do nothing with it and make the Government set my account up. I think it is a total waste of tax payers money and I wish they had never sent me the cheque.

re the Gordon Brown drinking voucher - we've decided to go with the Nationwide as we fancied sticking with a traditional building society, but with the shares option. We've also now got to set up a similar thing for dd1! as she's 4yrs so skint at 18!!

I also got the cheques for dt's wanted to use royal bank of scotland however they charge annually, so money would dither away before they are 18, does everyone charge annually?

If they've got a suitable account (haven't checked yet), ours is going in Triodos , as they purport to be an ethical bank} if they haven't I think I'll look at the Co op for the same reasons.
