Has anyone else heard of this?
I received this form a friend:

You can request a pack either by phone on 01702 307695 or via their website: www.claimsinformationservice.co.uk

You are eligible to claim £529 allowance if:

  • You have a child born between 6th April 1986 and 5th April 2003
  • You or your partner also worked & paid tax during 2002/2003 financial year (April 6th 2002 - April 5th 2003)
  • You or your partner also earned between £8,000 and £34,500 in the financial year 2002/2003
  • The child also lived with you for all or part of this financial year

You are eligible to claim £1049 allowance if:
-You can answer yes to the above questions & your child was also born between April 6th 2002 - April 5th 2003.

NOTHING TO LOSE!!!

If your claim is successful then 20% of the amount goes to the CIS. All of the above is explained in the pack.

When you return your back in the stamped addressed envelope you will need to include a separate letter giving permission for the CIS to contact the Inland Revenue on your behalf.

PLEASE TELL AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE - CLAIMS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY 31 JANUARY 2009.

Whaddya reckon????

Why not contact the Inland Revenue yourself and save the 20% fee ?

bratnav · 14/07/2008 14:01

Yes, I have just phoned HMRC and it is literally a case of them checking your records, and if you are eligible you can fill out a form and hey presto the cheque appears

littlerach · 14/07/2008 16:47

Haven't had chance to contcat either but will do so tomorrow.

The points in the first bit do you have to cover all 4 points or just 1-2 etc?

CarGirl · 14/07/2008 16:53

What is the theory about us getting refunds??? Is this something just introduced or for those who should have received it but didn't?

crochetdiva · 14/07/2008 16:54

Which department do I need to contact at HMRC?

DontNeedAnything · 14/07/2008 16:55

Is this in addition to teh tax credits I recieved for that time period - or is this for those people that didn't know they were entitled?

Divvy · 14/07/2008 16:58

Looks like this was pre tax credits.
Will watch this thread with iunterest as would have 3 children that I could claim for.

Divvy · 14/07/2008 16:59

Wonder if there is anything on martin lewis web site?

ScoobyDoo · 14/07/2008 17:00

hmm i am not sure if i am covered, ds was born in sept 02 i was still working in april 02 till about july then on mat leave so not sure if we can claim!

LIZS · 14/07/2008 17:02

hmm , we were abroad but paid UK tax that year. Would you have had to earn a minmum of 8k to qualify ?

DontNeedAnything · 14/07/2008 17:06

No - there was another tax credit system before "the tax credits". Started just before/after DTDs were born in 2001. I can't remember what it was called - working families tax credits maybe?

Trust me we claimed and got screwed over by them worse that the current Tax credits.

SaintGeorge · 14/07/2008 17:09

DO NOT GO THROUGH THAT COMPANY

Sorry to shout, just making sure you heard

There is something to lose.

In the small print there is a clause that says you will pay them a minimum of £99, even if your claim is unsuccessful.

SaintGeorge · 14/07/2008 17:15

There were a few schemes running before the current Tax Credits.

Family Income Supplement was back in the 70s/80s, then Family Credit in the late 80s/90s, then that became Working Families Tax Credit in 1999 (we claimed FC and WFTC and never had any problems).

Then they really lost the plot and changed to Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit in 2003.

Graciefer · 14/07/2008 17:58

I have just tried to telephone the child tax credit office, only to get an automated message saying 'we are currently experiencing high call volumes and can not answer your call at this time, please call back later'.

I had to have a little chuckle as I thought about how many mumsnetters must be on the phone now, heheh.

Thanks to the OP, not sure if we will qualify, but nothing ventured - nothing gained.

Divvy · 14/07/2008 18:40

They are always busy July as 31st is cut off for renewals.

bratnav · 14/07/2008 18:41

Not the tax credits office, you need to contact a local tax office. The allowance would have been added to either yours or DPs personal tax allowance, ie a higher than normal tax code, so if you can check this out it should answer whether you have already claimed it or not.

Do not us a claims company to do this, they are rip off merchants, just like the people who charge for claiming back your bank charges. It is a doddle to do it yourself

littlerach · 14/07/2008 19:58

Thanks St George, useful to know.

My dd was born on 3rd April 2003 and I was told about this but I was told it was instead of claiming tax credits for that year so I got a cheque for £1049 but didn't claim for tax credits until a year later as I was under the impression it had changed, I thik i was wrong becuae I'm sure some people got both. I got 3 months back pay when I finally applied.

catweazle · 14/07/2008 20:11

This was a tax allowance only available for 2 years before the current system came in. It was one per family and had to be claimed by the higher earner. Chances are you've already had it and not realised since in 99% of cases it went to the man.

Scoobydoo you have to be able to say yes to all 4 points.

Contact your own tax office, not the tax credits office (and not one of these money-making companies) here

curlywurlycremeegg · 15/07/2008 10:48

Can anyone confirm which tax years it was for please. It shouldn't have been added to my OH's as he isn't DS1's farther, so I should have had it, is that correct? TIA

crochetdiva · 15/07/2008 11:18

I've just phoned my local tax office, and it appears I'm eligible - and that we've never received it ... have just written a letter giving mine and dh's NI numbers, just wait and see now ...

isheisnthe · 15/07/2008 11:42

what about if you have since seperated from the childrens father - can you still claim?

lilyloo · 15/07/2008 13:12

What do i ask the tax credit office is it 'a tax credit allowance refund' ?
