I had a thread about my spending in AIBU - https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5532304-i-have-a-spending-problem-and-i-need-some-harsh-truths?utm_campaign=thread&utm_medium=app_share

But im now in the phase of actually kicking the habit and I just wanted a place to share about it without constantly putting that thread into the top of AIBU as it just leads to some not so helpful advice 😂

im 5 days into a no spend and I can already feel the urges abating, im saving everything I would’ve normally picked up and realising after a couple of days that I don’t actually want it.

My rules are simple:

£100 discretionary spending money a month, but once it’s gone it’s gone.

I’m not counting things like transport to work because I have to buy that no matter what

I’m in my mid to late 20s and I just cannot save money to save my life. I am very lucky to be able to save about £600 a month from my wages. After...

Thanks for posting this, OP. I read through your thread on AIBU (thought some of them were being harsh and not actually listening to what you were saying!) and it inspired me to run through my own spending with ChatGPT and get my finances in order after months and months of me saying I will do it!

Good luck with your challenge and keep posting!

Thank you!

I feel a lot more comfortable even after a week. Being able to control myself with money is brand new to me. It’s stuff like being able to grab a coffee and not feel horrendously guilty about it

I started this a few years ago and it was life changing.

my tips are: allow a treat each month of you can afford it.

unsubscribe from emails, delete apps

use up all of anything consumable before you repurchase - it’s amazing how much less you use knowing you won’t have any left. When you do rebuy, get the best value you can. this is everything- shampoo, washing liquid, notebooks, batteries. Also level down when you do re buy. Lidl I laundry liquid is a fraction of the cost of normal and just as good.

forgiven yourself every time to realise you have spent too much in the past.

If you have to spend money use a cash back site also at least you are earning something when you spend. I also like a Revolut account because no matter where I can get points. It’s a free account and can use it when abroad to change currencies.
i have referal codes if anyone wants 😜
