Nationwide Fairer Share

elkiedee · 21/05/2026 15:46

Nationwide has announced their Fairer Share payment today. They are giving lots of members £100 each, including DP (for the first time), our two sons and me (for the 3rd or 4th time/year.

If you haven't qualified, it's too late for this year but you've got a few months to decide whether it's worth applying for accounts you don't have and juggling your money around - it doesn't take that long to research and do for £100. Though it is apparently counted as interest if you would pay tax on £100 extra interest.

I notice that page also has a time-limited offer to switch your current a/c to Nationwide and get £175 for the switch.

They're not daft! They know folk will be looking today!

I did that this time last year so got the £175, cashback of £5 every month, decent interest, the fare share this year and a local branch! They have a good fixed bond offer on too.

I don't work for them I promise, I think they are absolutely brilliant though and am trying to get DH to also move.

Do the children get this for their accounts? I’d never thought of opening one for them

SpottyAlpaca · 22/05/2026 22:19

Yes, the email landed today. Another £100. 💙 Nationwide. They are a business which gives capitalism a good name & I’m very proud to have been a member for 30+ years.

Smokingtoaster · 23/05/2026 08:20

We and our teens all have accounts - £400 for our household!

Yes, they do if they have the right accounts, and it's a bit easier to qualify. Plus they get 5% interest on any money they keep in savings, and no charges for using their debit card abroad, if they go on school trips for example. No brainer to do it but you may need to be a bit scheming to make sure they get that reward.

Accounts need to be in their name, I think - baby passbook account naming DS1 but which showed on my account page online/on app too - doesn't count.

They need a Flex One account for 11-17s but qualifying on that bit is easier than for adult current accounts, and a qualifying savings account with £100 in. Students with a student account can qualify but need to hit the savings thing as well so may need a little nudge or assistance but I don't think kids need much persuasion to do things to get an extra £100 that is all theirs - my attitude is - have you checked your account? I think you've got some free money coming! They can spend it how they like because at university and college they need to be learning how to make good decisions.

DS2's small Nationwide cash CTF doesn't really grow much, and the interest rate is not good - but Nationwide's child but it does get him £100, though next year I may have to help him to make sure he has £100 in his savings account for at least some of March, somehow, unless he can leave CTF for a few months after his 18th birthday. DS2's CTF is a shares one with another company, so is not helpful here - and that meant he didn't get a Fairer Share the first year. Swings and roundabouts as 10 months after his 18th birthday, it's still growing really really well. And I helped him to set up savings and explained how the scheme works - he was actually saving earnings as well as birthday and Christmas and other presents money from family - aunts, grandparents, stepgrandparents, my cousins - he does alright, anyway so it wasn't hard to explain and I think it's a good learning experience for children.

I still haven't heard from NW - I usually qualify. Perhaps it's alphabetical order!! 🤞🤞🤞

JacknDiane · 27/05/2026 16:10

I got it again but dh only got it last year, I dont know why?

JulietteHasAGun · 27/05/2026 16:21

I haven’t had an email but I have a cash isa, a bond account and a savings account with them so am hoping I’m eligible. I got it last year. I do have a current account as well but haven’t made ten transactions a month.

Thanks, I’m going to speak to our teen about this…

0livesandcheese · 27/05/2026 16:25

They also have a great insurance package on one of the accounts

Marmaladeaddict · 28/05/2026 05:53

Do you still get free insurance with the current account t?

The requirements seem a bit more confusing this year re the 10 payments...

"For example: you paid in £500 and made two payments out in both February and March 2026.
OR

  • In two of the three months of January 2026, February 2026 and March 2026, you must have made at least 10 payments out of your current account".
Good luck! 🤞
Lifestooshort71 · 28/05/2026 06:59

I've just 'chatted' on my banking app and I am still eligible, phew. They've got a separate box to click to ask the virtual assistant....

"It looks like you're eligible
for the Nationwide Fairer
Share payment for 2026,
If SO, you can expect the
payment between 10 June
and 30 June 2026."

Worth doing for peace of mind.

i have this. Family travel, comprehensive breakdown and mobile phone insurance. The breakdown insurance has paid for itself as I’ve got a crap car! You also get free transactions abroad.
My DCs can’t wait for their £100 which they’ll immediately fritter away in the corner shop and Popeyes 😂

Me neither. I might call them and ask.

You don’t need to call them. Just ask the chat bot on the app.

Cheersmedears123 · 28/05/2026 07:43

I qualify on all areas but the savings (I save elsewhere) so missed out annoyingly! I need to keep it in mind for next year. However I got a nice joining bonus at Christmas when I switched and have been very happy with them.

Go on the app and ask the virtual assistant - it worked for me.

checkcheckcheckchick · 28/05/2026 08:33

My children heard about this from friends last year so asked to get a current and savings account with them in order to get it. They were thrilled to get their letters this week 🤣

JulietteHasAGun · 28/05/2026 08:51

I’m not eligible this year. You need a qualifying current account and savings or current account and mortgage. (Possibly just a current account too). My savings account is eligible but not my current account as even though I have a few k in it I haven’t made enough transactions. So I don’t have the combination

is a bit crap. I’ve got 50k with them in total

To be fair the reward is for people who use them as their everyday bank

LoopyGremlin · 28/05/2026 08:54

My new mortgage with Nationwide started on 1 April 🙈 Hopefully next year!

checkcheckcheckchick · 28/05/2026 08:54

It was one thing when people were moaning about it a few years ago, but the criteria is well understood now,
you can easily google what you most likely need to do to make yourself eligible. No guarantees obviously, but it’s been quite predictable for a while.

SlipperyLizard · 28/05/2026 08:55

Worth diarising fro next year - I made sure I was eligible by checking the conditions for previous years and meeting them - for me that meant £100 in my savings account and making at least 2 payments of £500 into my current account in Jan, Feb or March (as I don’t have enough smaller transactions) - I just transferred money from my main current account and straight back.

Did the same for DDs (who don’t always have £100 in savings).
