Water pursuing me for Mum's debt

Hi, is this legal? My mum and I used to live in an address about 4 years ago and the water company are now chasing me for her debt. I have never been responsible for bills there as I was a child at the time.

They have sent it to a collections agency and are now insisting that I take responsibility for her debt. My credit has dropped 80 points from Excellent to Fair. My Mum is insisting that it's some kind of scam but I don't think it is if my credit has already dropped so far.

Reported for being a lot of shite from OP, especially as others have found things out about her which don't add up.

Well that’s because they were basing it on your initial claim that you were a child when the debt occurred? So obviously completely irrelevant now that you’ve disclosed you were in fact not a child.

Also (may have been mentioned elsewhere) raise a dispute with your credit rating platforms.

You should be signed up to the credit score platforms to check across all three scores.

No, I don't have a serial killer file as you put it, on anybody. Just advanced search, as provided by MN.

You mentioned your mum moved in with her bf. Does that mean you still live at the property? If so they have probably added your name from the council tax records.
Can your mum prove she’s paid these bills? It’s odd calling it a scam when it’s affecting your credit score.
