How much is the weekly food shop?!

Keenbean22 · 24/02/2026 12:24

I understand it’s variable for everyone depending on number of people etc but my food shop keeps going up and up! Is this normal these days?!

family of 5 ( 2 adults, 2 children. 1 baby). Tend to cook 90% from scratch with the odd pizza thrown in. I do cook dinner for my grandmother 3 nights a week. Kids eat the same meals we do. All have breakfast at home, one DD has school dinner so the rest of us need lunch too. No pets. need nappies but no formula.

we seek to be averaging £150-£200 a week. Am I going wrong somewhere?!

I think you're doing pretty well. £200 for 4 people (didn't count baby) for a week's worth of food is £7 per day. On top of that you are feeding the baby and the grandmother and buying nappies.

A bought sandwich is now costing about £5.

I spend around £70 just for me but that does include litter & food for 2 cats, a bottle of wine or two, all household stuff etc. It is really expensive. I do eat well imo but at the same time I have "cheap" meals too. EG I'll make a pot of bolognaise and freeze the leftovers into portions to have on other nights. I do the same with chili. I tend to have a monthly cycle of dinners.

I probably could save money but tbh I value convenience more. As in I dont drive (live in london) so a trip to aldi would involved a bus and lugging it all home and I can't be bothered! Same with places like b&m. I get a Tesco delivery and there's a waitrose nearby, which is nice but a bit spendy! I tend to use that for treats and more niche items.

My DC are adults now but I remember well the days when £50 was a big shop for 3 of us for the week. At Christmas I used to spend £100 and that would be all the christmas food, treats etc. Now you can easily spend £100 and have very little to show for it.

GranolaBaker · 24/02/2026 14:11

About £300 a week for four people (that includes a bit of alcohol (most wine is from merchant), a meal box for three nights for two adults and m&s for nice weekend lunches and meals). As per user name, I do make my own granola …

£30. 2 adults, 2 kids and a dog. Emphasis on veg and whole grains. We’re vegetarian too (except the dog…) so that helps.

Toastersandkettles · 24/02/2026 14:17

2 adults, 1 teen, 2 DCs here and we spend £150-170 a week. Dog's food is from the pet shop at another £50 a month. I'm trying to cut back, but still my food bill gets higher and higher! My DSs are going through puberty and are always hungry and looking for food. It's really starting to stress me out.

I honestly don’t believe a family of 4 eat their meals for the week with £30 unless they’re literally eating unbalanced poverty rations.

ImpatientlyWaitingForSummer · 24/02/2026 14:27

Ours is anything between £130-£150 per week plus a takeaway on a Friday. That’s for two adults, a two year old and a baby. It feels like such a lot of money! I suspect mine is low compared to a lot of others though

MissAdvantage · 24/02/2026 15:11

£200 a week - me, DH and 19 year old DS

Blueeberry · 24/02/2026 15:37

Typically around £150/week (Adult DD and I, 2 cats and a large, fussy dog!)

We’re vegetarian but have found that meat alternatives are becoming increasingly pricey. Mostly eat low UPF which also drives prices up.

Citygirlrurallife · 24/02/2026 15:43

2 adults, 2 adult sized teens, 2 cats and a dog, all meals (everybody takes packed lunches or works from home), cook 90% from scratch as well, meal plan as well. Mostly veggie diet so when I do buy meat for DD and DH in fairness it is organic and higher welfare, but I raid the yellow sticker section on the regular. Main shop at Lidl, veggies and fruit from the market but it’s very reasonable. We do drink but not much, probably buy a bottle or two of wine a week at the most. No brands. Doesn’t include toilet paper, washing machine sheets, dishwasher tablets or the dog’s main kibble as on subscription

EASILY we spend £200-250 a week (towards the higher end if we host dinner). Have def noticed particularly my Lidl shop has jumped up just this year

Marmite27 · 24/02/2026 15:44

£115 per week. 2 adults, 2 upper primary DC.

No alcohol or special diets, we all mostly eat the same, kids have school dinners. There’s usually leftovers and we have a very full pantry.

We shop at Aldi, then pop into Morrisons, Asda or Sainsbury’s for bits we can’t get in Aldi. They’re next door to the children’s activities so we’re not going out of our way.

100%, that’s utterly impossible if you’re buying any fruit or veg. Or every meal is the cheapest possible ready meal ever and you don’t wash yourselves or your home

Justaregularmum · 24/02/2026 15:46

2 adults, 2 pre teens, a big dog and cat here.. spend about £120-150 on weekly shop, but we have a takeaway and top up bread etc so I’d say £200 would be a fair estimate.

PocketSand · 24/02/2026 15:50

It’s the increase. The stuff I buy has remained fairly constant but the price of buying the same stuff has increased by an alarming amount. I am now at around £170 from main supermarket with top ups for fresh fruit and veg and other products no longer stocked. A couple of years ago I was at £130 or less and £170 was my special Christmas shop.

Hereforthecommentz · 24/02/2026 15:52

I think that's a normal amount. I spend between 120 and 160 a week, 2 kids 2 adults and a dog. It's a rip off really. By day 3 the kids have raided the cupboards and it seems like there's nothing left too. I've taken to hiding crisps and lunch bits otherwise there's top ops needed. My son has packed lunch the teen has a mix of packed lunch and canteen.

Yes it's impossible. I mean cleaning products can cost more than that! and fruit veg is expensive unless she's buying frozen.

Floundering66 · 24/02/2026 15:57

Sounds good to me.

We are two adults and a toddler spending around £100-£120 (Tescos with a midweek top up shop of berries at Waitrose), still buying nappies. Only I have lunch everyday and usually a take away once a fortnight.

1457bloom · 24/02/2026 15:58

£60 every two weeks .

My dog easily costs us £12 per week, so that would leave £18 for the rest of us! Even if all you ate was lentils and porridge it would be a push.

around £100 - 150 pw for 2 adults
we don't buy alcohol, processed foods/ready meals, or snacks
we cook everything from scratch and like to opt for higher quality options

FlipFlopPipPop · 24/02/2026 16:01

Maybe £90 / week for 3 (2 adults / 1 kid with a big appetite!) plus doggo. Were fairly thrifty and mostly eat veggie - but always get organic eggs and dairy where possible so that bumps costs up. It wasn’t long ago we could do all that for £60 a week I’d say.

Emmz1510 · 24/02/2026 16:03

Between £80 and £100 per week for a family of 3. Weekly shopping on a Saturday, but this doesn’t include occasional top ups through the week, usually of bread, random stuff we need or I forgot at the weekend, or a few beers for OH. I feel this is us trying to be careful.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 24/02/2026 16:08

Ours was rarely below £200, average about £220 when there were five of us at home, five adults though, a dog and two cats. Now with three of us we can still spend £200 some weeks but more often £150 -£180. There are economies of scale with more of you. I meal plan but buy things like chestnut maran eggs and not the cheapest meat or fish. Also there is a fair bit of non-food in there, it's not just food.

Bumdishcloths · 24/02/2026 16:12

Everything has increased in price. I’ve noticed this in particular with fruit and veg. Example: cucumber used to be 49p. A few months ago it was 89p. Now 99p. Cauliflower now £1.10 which for a readily available seasonable vegetable is ridiculous. It all adds up. Account for meat increasing in price exponentially (beef mince now over £4 for 400g if you want decent quality and low fat content). Add in dairy products that are going up. Things like laundry liquid are ridiculous now too. I shop in Tesco, Aldi and Lidl and even Lidl is getting stupid now, it’s depressing AF.

RebeccaRedhat · 24/02/2026 16:16

We're a family of 5 2 adults and kids aged 16,13 & 9+ 1 dog. We are probably close to £150 per week with a takeaway/meal out maybe once or twice per month. We do main shop at Tesco and top ups at sainsburys. I eat a high protein diet so nothing massively processed, except foe rhe odd time I fancy a chicken nugget or 9! I dont drink in the house but my husband does do a bottle of whiskey every couple of weeks. We don't buy too much branded stuff, just the odd thing like ketchup, washing tablets, soup amd crisps. Would love to cut down but with 2 teenagers its not likely to happen any time soon!
