VERY dull but please indulge me - how much do you pay per year or per month for house insurance?

I want to know as it has just occurred to me that we seem to paying rather a lot, given I've only ever claimed once in 12 years, for a small amount....

anyone got any recommendations? We are currently with Alliance and Leicster - mainly cos we have mortgage with them and we have been too idle busy to do more research.

Ours is a modest 3 bed semi too, fmf - think that's about the going rate really..

scaryteacher · 06/06/2008 19:59

I was paying £65.00 per month for combined buildings and contents, but with M&S which was a gold plated unlimited buildings and contents cover with accidental damage and new for old replacement.

I have since moved abroad and can't get more than £50,000 cover for contents with a company that covers the UK Armed Forces, which is a worry as I have way more than that in contents.

If you go and add up everything in your house you may alarm yourself at how much you have if you add it up on a new for old basis, so you may be underinsured.

Tinker · 06/06/2008 20:00

£31.81 - just checked. 3 bed house. That's building and contents.

WideWebWitch · 06/06/2008 20:03

£7 a month through Barclays for contents only (we rent). No out of house cover, £100 excess. I did shop around for that quote about a year ago.

WideWebWitch · 06/06/2008 20:03

Ours 3 bed detached in low crime area.

oldcrock · 06/06/2008 20:05

£21.21 pm with Zurich - terraced.

oldcrock · 06/06/2008 20:05

That's buildings and contents btw.

Nappyzoneneedsanewname · 06/06/2008 20:07

Just doing our tonight - £150 for they yr - buildings and contents with tesco

Toothyboy · 06/06/2008 20:08

1950s 3 bed semi - £50,000 contents. Monthly payment is £20.03. This is with uia, but you have to be a member of one of the Trade Unions listed on the site. Not sure if this'll help you but it may help others if they're looking!

HappyMummyOfOne · 06/06/2008 20:09

£11.50 for unlimited buildings and contents with Marks and Spencer for a 2 bed house.

TequilaMockinBird · 06/06/2008 20:11

If you go onto www.moneysupermarket.com and put your details in, they will compare loads of different insurers so you can see which is the cheapest etc.

MarmadukeScarlet · 06/06/2008 20:16

One thing that you have to bear in mind is if you insure with your mortgage co (iirc from when I did this) look on your mortgage statement carefully.

Ours used to be added to the sum we owed on the mortgage and we paid interest on it.

It was years ago when dh and I bought our first house, but I seem to remember some fishy goings on, but can't exactly remember what.

detoxdiva · 06/06/2008 20:18

£31 a month for buildings and contents with lloyds. They tried putting our premium up by nearly £15 a month this year, but knocked it back down when I phoned and threatened to move to another company.

fullmoonfiend · 06/06/2008 20:19

wow - there's some real differences, aren't there?

melpomene · 06/06/2008 20:28

I think ours is about £300 for buildings and contents. If you buy it online through a cashback site (eg. www.quidco.com) you can effectively knock £30 or £40 off the price.

zippitippitoes · 06/06/2008 20:31

its about 35 a month i think for which they are insuring 40k contents and it is for my three bedroom house and the one outside with two beds for some odd reason all tho that is a detached house thye say it doesnt have a separate address so it counts as one 5 bedroom house thats with the nationwide who use churchill and includes legal and accidental

staryeyed · 06/06/2008 20:38

I've been getting ridiculous quotes for a 2 bedroom flat in London and contents only insurance. Does anyone know where to look?

somersetmum · 06/06/2008 21:02

£29.09 for unlimited buildings, £50,000 contents, accidental cover for both buildings and contents, new for old cover, family legal cover, personal possessions and cash anywhere in the world.

Leslaki · 07/06/2008 13:53

£259 for a 4 bed detached - went through Quidco ad got £70 cashback - tha was with privelige. Got aaccidental damage etc etc on it and I have claimed in the last 5 years

jamila169 · 07/06/2008 13:55

£34 a month for unlimited buildings and contents with accidental damage, plus a 24 hour emergency call out line and £1000000 legal cover

TequilaMockinBird · 07/06/2008 18:02

Forgot to say, I found the cheapest/best policy on moneysupermarket and then went through Quidco to buy it (it was with Lloyds).

I got £120 cashback for going through Quidco
