Energy bill increasing to £1735 per month!!

Energynightmare · 28/10/2025 01:06

I know this needs an urgent phone call with eon first thing but I can’t sleep worrying about it. I’ve got a newborn that’s a few weeks old so this combined with the postpartum anxiety is not good at all.

I’ve been with eon for several years and a few weeks ago changed to a different tariff to save a bit of money. I currently pay £155 per month and am slightly in credit. They said on the new tariff I would pay an estimated £118 per month.

Anyways I just got an email from them tonight ‘reminding’ me (although this is the first I’ve heard of if!) that my monthly direct debit of £1735 will be taken next Monday!! wtf. That’s literally more in one month than they estimated I’d be paying in the whole year!

I’ve gone on my account and it won’t let me change the amount. Doesn’t look like anything odd is going on with my energy usage. I have a smart meter so it updates automatically and my estimated usage for October at the moment is showing at £100.

I told my DP just before we went to bed and he said not to worry as it’s so ridiculous it has to be a mistake.

Does anyone know what I can do if they refuse to reduce it? Do they have the right to just take whatever they like??

Im on £700 a month maternity allowance at the moment so there’s absolutely no way I can pay £1735 if they try to take it on Monday. Haven’t slept a wink. Also annoyed that the twats emailed this at 9pm so i have no way of contacting them until tomorrow.

It will be a glitch, dont panic!!

Muffinmam · 28/10/2025 01:37

Cancel your direct debit with the bank.

FinanceLPlates · 28/10/2025 01:53

Are you sure the email isn’t a scam attempt? I would definitely call eon tomorrow, but be sure not to click on any direct links from the email, and google any phone numbers/find them on their official website to confirm they are legitimate.

Randomesttnought · 28/10/2025 01:56

First things first I would empty the bank account and your overdraft so if it does attempt to take that it bounces.

Then I would ring EON. Then ring the bank to ask advice/make a plan for if they try to take payment anyway.

DW it will be resolved but you just need to make sure they don’t take any cash in the interim.

thankgoditssaturday · 28/10/2025 02:40

You can switch providers quite easily and you can switch onto cheaper offers.

Definitely not a scam as I logged into my account and it was showing monthly DD was now £1735.

Unfortunately it’s due to come out the first working day of the month when all other important DDs are due - mortgage, council tax, insurance etc

Ill definitely be ringing them though and will call my bank too for advice.

Don't empty your bank account, it's not necessary and won't solve the issue.

You have nearly a week to sort this with eon and it's clearly a mistake. No normal household with bills around £118 to £155 a month that's slightly in credit needs to pay £1735 a month, they will see that straight away.

Phone them and they'll sort it. If for some reason they don't after a couple of days, cancel the DD and email them to say you have done this as you can't risk them taking all this money as it could mean all your other bills like mortgage bounce.

This should focus them into sorting the mistake and setting it back to the right amount.

spoonbillstretford · 28/10/2025 05:20

Cancel it with the bank. I wouldn't want to risk all my money disappearing for other bills that month and fuck knows how long it will take Eon to deal with it and refund it. Then let them write to you.

Best to treat energy companies like the incomptent, thieving fuckwits that they are. Don't trust them, don't let them use you as their bank, only deal with them by email so you have written records, keep all records.

Newdoggo · 28/10/2025 05:21

The bank can reverse it if you don't get it sorted in time, if you see it pending just call them and get it reversed

gottamoveon · 28/10/2025 05:21

They can’t and won’t cut you off supply, especially with a newborn as you’ll be categorised as vulnerable. It will definitely be a mistake. Phone them as soon as you can.
switch suppliers (or threaten to) if they don’t solve it immediately

Catsknowbest · 28/10/2025 05:36

Muffinmam · 28/10/2025 01:37

Cancel your direct debit with the bank.

Agree. Just do this until its resolved. No need to panic, honestly, as your OH says it will be a glitch.

Irenesortof · 28/10/2025 06:10

It won’t happen OP, don’t worry, it’ll be sorted when you ring them. If not then you can always to tell your bank to stop the payment.

Allthings · 28/10/2025 07:15

The suggested monthly amount is what a typical user will pay annuallly. It looks like it’s some form of glitch. Don’t panic and contact them today. The matter should be easily resolved, but if you do have issues, make a formal complaint and advise them that you will not be paying the suggested DD whilst the complaint is being investigated, but will continue to pay what you were paying. Then contact your bank. Tbh it should not get to the stage where you should need to do that.

Before you contact your supplier, make sure that the bills you have been receiving are based on meter readings and are not estimates. Tell them what your annual usage has been and what the cost should be on the new tariff based on that usage.

this is crazy 'advice'. You want them to empty their bank account and draw down all of their overdraft? What would that achieve, apart from potential overdraft charges + not having funds to pay any of their other bills meaning that they may get missed payment markers impacting their credit history.

Don't do this, it's a stupid idea that would end up with you getting bank charges

GriGreen · 28/10/2025 08:18

Just call them. It’s quite clearly a mistake.

I would also go on a comparison site and do a new search to see if you’re getting the best price.

dementedpixie · 28/10/2025 08:20

@Energynightmare just contact them
Their WhatsApp seems to be live from 8am until 10pm so id do that rather than sit in a phone queue

Agree. MN needs an 'ignore this, it's nonsense' reaction.

That sounds like the yearly amount and it's got mixed up

Greenwitchart · 28/10/2025 08:24

You can set up online banking with your bank if you haven't already and cancel your DD there.

It is clearly a mistake, probably should be £175 and the wrong amount was entered. Call the utility company and don't get off the phone until this is sorted.

Longer term Octopus is my provider and they have been really good.

Bluecrystal2 · 28/10/2025 08:28

I've just done a fixed yearly deal of £597 per year and no direct debit. You must be worried sick, but it's got to be a mistake. Am sure you will get it sorted by the end of the day.

gottamoveon · 28/10/2025 08:30

Have you misread it in a panic and £1735 is actually the annual amount?

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 28/10/2025 08:34

Cancel the direct debit pronto.

Then call the company. It will be an error!
