Energy bill increasing to £1735 per month!!

I know this needs an urgent phone call with eon first thing but I can’t sleep worrying about it. I’ve got a newborn that’s a few weeks old so this combined with the postpartum anxiety is not good at all.

I’ve been with eon for several years and a few weeks ago changed to a different tariff to save a bit of money. I currently pay £155 per month and am slightly in credit. They said on the new tariff I would pay an estimated £118 per month.

Anyways I just got an email from them tonight ‘reminding’ me (although this is the first I’ve heard of if!) that my monthly direct debit of £1735 will be taken next Monday!! wtf. That’s literally more in one month than they estimated I’d be paying in the whole year!

I’ve gone on my account and it won’t let me change the amount. Doesn’t look like anything odd is going on with my energy usage. I have a smart meter so it updates automatically and my estimated usage for October at the moment is showing at £100.

I told my DP just before we went to bed and he said not to worry as it’s so ridiculous it has to be a mistake.

Does anyone know what I can do if they refuse to reduce it? Do they have the right to just take whatever they like??

Im on £700 a month maternity allowance at the moment so there’s absolutely no way I can pay £1735 if they try to take it on Monday. Haven’t slept a wink. Also annoyed that the twats emailed this at 9pm so i have no way of contacting them until tomorrow.

Unfortunately with eon it’s not a glitch it’s a real amount and they will carry on claiming you owe this ridiculous amount even if you pay £300 a month!

Nearly50omg · 28/10/2025 12:36

Just cancel your direct debit with them and tell the bank you didn’t authorise this ridiculous amount and then carry on paying what you did before with a new supplier

Zempy · 28/10/2025 12:40

I would still cancel the DD. Just call the automated line on Monday and pay the normal amount by debit card.

op isn't going to know whether its sorted out or not until the 1st of the month - when either eon take the £1735 or not

Then if op doesn't have the money in the account and is left overdrawn - op will pay charges, or worse over her overdraft limit and she will pay those charges

for some that will be a small problem of a nut but for many the £1735 will not be a nut of a small problem but a great cracking problem that will cause issues for several weeks

OP should have this resolved pretty quickly. I have already advised of next steps if things are not sorted and there are concerns about the DD, which of course will be genuine concerns and will need resolving due to the DD being incorrect and insufficient funds.

There is the rest of today and into tomorrow for the correct DD to be confirmed before OP needs to take other actions. Far quicker to go through the logical steps and follow a process than a knee jerk reaction. Rather than spend time setting up new bank accounts, change energy supplier and all then entails including the possibility of a switch to another supplier being blocked, its far quicker to sort the matter out with the energy supplier in the first instance. As previously said this can be followed up with a formal complaint and speaking to the bank about the DD if things are not confirmed in a timely manner.

Allthings · 29/10/2025 13:59

@Energynightmare did you manage to get this sorted out?

Of course it's not a real amount, don't post nonsense like that and make the OP worried when she doesn't need to be.

She's in credit and has typical DD amounts. No-one with a normal house and normal usage needs to pay £300 a month let alone £1735.

Contact your bank ASAP.

Call EON back and request to speak to someone more senior.

RiseOfTheTeenyTinies · 29/10/2025 14:55

I would actually contact your bank and cancel the direct debit if possible. My bank has the ability to do this in the APP

Hhhwgroadk · 03/02/2026 16:46

Dump Eon. Their systems must be absolute rubbish. We changed to Octopus and only on 2 occasions (over 15 years) have we had queries about our bill and it was rectified within the hour. Are you on an old meter or a smart meter where you see how much your actual bill is in real time?

You do not need them to mess you about at this time.

Cancel your direct debit with the bank.

It will be too late. In this case DD should be cancelled yesterday, before 5pm.

It is far too late since this post is from October! It looks like someone reactivated this thread to talk about Octopus. I suspect they work there or perhaps are going on about an imaginary good experience they’ve had with them hoping that they can recommend them and get some referral
money. Bless.

(Tip for that user: Octopus haven’t even been going for 15 years so that blows your story apart!)
