NC’d for this I have been a single parent…went through a messy divorce a while back. Met a new partner and we have finally bought a house together. Don’t worry everything is sorted legally etc!
my dc finally have their own rooms and a warm, non damp home.
I’m getting paid today and instead of scrambling and stretching after I have paid my half of bills and food, and saved a good amount I will have just under 2k left for the month! I actually don’t even know what to do with it! I have spent the last few months sorting out furniture etc for the dc’s rooms so it has been used up. But now that all of that is done I’m left with the reality of what Is left. I could actually cry. Just wanted to share my joy, not being goady at all, just wanted to share that things can change for the better is all. I never thought they would!

Roll on to a lovely first Christmas there too!

Congratulations! What a wonderful feeling.

Does your partner have an equal amount? Are your savings shared?

TBH though I'd use some of that money for fun, I'd try to build a serious nest egg so you're never in that position again. I wouldn't put money into children's savings (in case you're tempted) - I'd boost my own as much as possible. They will benefit from that, too.

MeatballMenu · 23/09/2025 18:06

How lovely! I've been there (many years ago now) and can still remember that huge lifting of a dark cloud that I had been lugging around for years.

Enjoy your new home.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 23/09/2025 18:06

Congratulations op ❤️

AnotherVice · 23/09/2025 18:09

Does this mean you’re now dependent on your new partner though?

Yes we both have our own savings. I got what I was owed from my divorce…it took years but the battle was worth it! I have money kept back and we have a joint account. Everything is in good order.

I feel you!!! I lived hand to mouth for years. High rents and poorly paid jobs.

I felt everything was so precarious…… I lived with boyfriends I wasn’t even that keen on, rather than in a grotty house share.
I found myself regularly having to quickly find new places to live and shared/lived with some scary people.
I lived in a car and a tent for a time one summer……

I met and married my husband who is stable, caring and clever with money.
He’s not a particularly high earner, but now we go away multiple times a year in the UK, plus 3-4 trips abroad each year for lovely holidays…… we own our own lovely house and I don’t need to worry about money any more.

I try to appreciate where I am every day!
