Adding 17 year old to car insurance!

Rumpumpum · 25/08/2025 11:48

How much is it going to cost? We have a small car but dreading how much it will increase it by! What is typical for a small car 1.2 L engine? How will I know I’m getting a good deal?

The best thing to do would be to go on one of the comparison websites and get quotes that way.
It won’t be cheap to insure a 17yr old,but they can’t drive without insurance.

AreYouShittingMe · 25/08/2025 12:06

I was surprised how cheap I could get it for, while my DC’s were learning. It was when they had passed their test it was 💰💰. The key was to shop around- I changed insurers for it, due to the deal I could get elsewhere. I think we went with Stirling for one, and Admiral for DS2 ( although that was for me, new driver DS1 and learner driver DS1). Companies like Marmalade are supposed to be reasonably as well. With a 1.2 l engine it shouldn’t be too bad, but it does depend on the car.

rainbowunicorn · 25/08/2025 12:56

Is it for a learner or have they passed? If it is a learner then usually not a huge amount.

nortonfan9 · 25/08/2025 12:58

DD 17 has own insurance to drive my car and it cost £290 for the year. Cheapest way of doing it but cons are she can only drive my car. As PP said I think it shoots up when they’ve passed!!

Bromptotoo · 25/08/2025 13:03

Getting them on as learners wasn't that expensive. Once they'd passed the test cost much more though not prohibitive.

Daughter, who at 17 was pretty petite, took to driving my Xantia Estate like a duck to water but her friends thought she was brave.

Mumski45 · 25/08/2025 15:17

Try LV. My DS2(17) passed a few weeks ago. We have a multi car policy with LV for 2 cars, DH and I on one car and DH,DS1(19) and me on the second smaller car (Toyota Aygo x) it cost me £34.14 to add DS2 to the Aygo when he passed which covers him until renewal in the first week of October and half of that was the admin charge.

reversegear · 25/08/2025 15:21

You know when they pass the insurance firms are stamping down on adding them to parent policy’s it’s called “fronting” and they want all 17+ drivers on their own policy’s. So be sure you do still drive the car and your sons and daughters just have it for occasional uses, else they technically are committing fraud and you can all get points and large fines.

Chasingsquirrels · 25/08/2025 15:29

Both of my boys were very cheap to add to my insurance (2011 Passat Estate) as learners (2020 & 2023). To keep them on when they passed would have been thousand, with the same insurance company, and still hundreds/thousand more of I shopped around. They didn't stay on the insurance once they passed!

Ds1 had to stop lessons (covid) although still dod quite a lot with me, then went to uni and didn’t restart lessons. Finally passed Dec 2024 after graduating, then moved to London Jan 2025 and hasn't needed to drive.
Ds2 passed on Nov 2023 then didn’t drive again until Sep 2024 when he started a job post a'levels. He'd had a bus pass for the academic year and the cost of running a car would have been ridiculous.

Mustbethat · 25/08/2025 15:33

I got a refund of about £20 when I added learner ds 🤷‍♀️.

it’s when they pass it gets expensive.

PistachioTiramisuLimoncello · 25/08/2025 15:41

why hasn’t anyone told the op how much it costs???

rainbowunicorn · 25/08/2025 16:19

PistachioTiramisuLimoncello · 25/08/2025 15:41

why hasn’t anyone told the op how much it costs???

Because it wouldn't make a bit of difference to her. It will vary on Car, trim of car, engine size, whether automatic or manual, Postcode, who her insurance company are etc. The best thing she can do is just call the company she is with and ask. They will do a quote there and then. If she isnt happy with that she can go to a compariosn site
What I or you or anyone else pay is irrelevant.

Rumpumpum · 25/08/2025 16:20

I’m with Allianz and the FAQ says they won’t add anyone re a provisional which is annoying!

Snorlaxo · 25/08/2025 16:22

Learner insurance wasn’t expensive- it’s the first year after the pass that cost loads.

I haven’t given a number because the amount depends on age of car, make, model, postcode etc

I paid £150ish for DS to drive my car as a learner. The company was Collingwood. I've got a 1.4l car.

Iamthemoom · 25/08/2025 16:32

DD passed a few weeks ago and has her own policy on her own car with a black box. It cost £1200.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 25/08/2025 16:34

DS had to have his own learners policy as he would be ruining the car the most. It was about £270 with sterling on a little Peugeot. It will shoot up once he’s passed his test though!

Lovingthelighterevenings · 25/08/2025 16:48

DS had a learner policy (becomes invalid as soon as he passed), his first year after test was around £900 (with his < 1 years NCD) and this year it was less (which I was surprised given that insurance always seem to go up not down). For a Aygo 1-1.2L I guess

TheSmallAssassin · 25/08/2025 16:54

How much is your 17YO actually going to be driving? Our daughter is learning at the moment with a driving instructor, for practice with us in our car she just gets pay as you go insurance for the hour she's driving and a friend's daughter did PAYG when she'd passed too, as she was just driving for trips to the beach or whatever a few times a month.

Rumpumpum · 25/08/2025 17:16

He is a learner and will get lessons. Husband wants to take him out or our car and then we’ll add him to our insurance when he passes

OP posts:
PoemsForTea · 25/08/2025 17:28

My insurers wouldn't add my 17yo at all - 2011 Peugeot Partner - nothing fancy! She ended up buying a car, and getting her own policy with me as named driver which cost £240 for the year with Collingwood. Once passed is now with Ticker and very good experience and price.

InflagranteDelicto · 25/08/2025 18:05

Ds gets PAYG insurance from Veygo for my little car. Approx £10/24h increasing to £20 now he's passed his test. Having their own policy also builds up their own no claims

Perfectlystill · 25/08/2025 18:14

It's cheap when they're learning but more than doubles once they pass.

This isn't fronting. Fronting is when you say the parents are the main drivers, when really it is the kid. If the OP's son is genuinely just someone who will sometimes drive the car, he can be 'just' a named driver.

Rumpumpum · 30/08/2025 13:38

Got Veygo per month for £36. Marmalade was £82 per month!!!! Got to get lessons as well though all the driving schools are busy round here!

seratoninmoonbeams · 30/08/2025 13:43

As a learner it’s cheap-ish. It’s when they pass and get their own it rockets. Getting a quote in good time and saving it keeps the cost waaaay down. Paying in full will also save 20% obviously if that’s an option. My DS was around £250pa as a learner, named driver. His own insurance on a 1l car was £1200 paid in one go - with money he saved himself- not that that’s really relevant, but I don’t have that sat around sadly.
