Credit card issue

HollyhockDays · 17/08/2025 11:21

DH and I have a shared card. He is the “primary” name on the account. This means only he can see on the app how much has been spent on it. Does anyone know of any cards where both have access on the banks app to the spending on it?

Is it a credit card? You possibly don't have a 'joint' card in that case. He has an account and you are an additional cardholder. Usually the case with credit cards.
Most joint current accounts are as you want - I have a joint current account with HSBC which we can both see on the app.

Wolfpa · 17/08/2025 12:27

I have never seen that as a possibility on a credit card.

ClassicalQueen · 17/08/2025 12:30

Joint credit cards aren’t usually a thing, you will be an additional cardholder on his account. This is the set up we have with Amex, where I can only see what I’ve spent on the card but DH can see everything. I’m not sure what the problem is as it is paid in full by DD each month and we keep a large enough buffer in the (joint) current account that there is always enough for CC payments.

gamerchick · 17/08/2025 12:35

Can't you just use his APP?

You could get your own card.

No, you can't use someone else's app without breaking the t&c of the account, please don't share passwords or PINs.

DappledOliveGroves · 17/08/2025 12:57

I’m an additional cardholder on some of DH’s cards and vice versa. I have his log ins BUT I also use YNAB and link the credit card accounts so I can easily see spending on both cards.

Because that's what we do when our husbands or wives log into their app to show spending isn't it. Wave it away in case we're caught.

I'm not sure what you mean.

But if the bank wanted to investigate you for whatever reason, discovering your password and/or PIN is compromised won't do you any favours. There are better solutions out there than sharing passwords.

Mumski45 · 17/08/2025 15:05

The Amex card I have as an additional card holder for my DH’s account allows me to have my own log in to see my spending and make payments but I can’t see DH’s spending on the primary card.

londongirl12 · 17/08/2025 15:07

Can’t you have the app on your phone too? Not a credit card, but we do that on our nectar card. It’s DH card, but I have the app to collect the points etc.

Starlight40 · 17/08/2025 21:46

I just have the app on my phone and log in with his details. I‘m the additional card holder.x

RigIt · 18/08/2025 00:17

You don’t have a shared card. You are an authorised card holder on your DH’s credit card account. It’s his debt, and his account.

You could sign up for an app where the transactions will be pulled across from the credit card account using open banking. We use a budgeting app called YNAB which does this (you’d have to check whether your institution is included), but there are lots of apps that do this, including some banking apps - for example my Santander app allows you to import transactions from other institutions. Not sure if the banking apps allow transactions from other people but the budgeting apps certainly do. Your DH would need to log into them every 3 months for the access to continue.

Pemba · 18/08/2025 01:38

DH has a Barclaycard and I am an additional cardholder. It is our main credit card and we tend to do most spending on it, for the 0.5 % or whatever that we get credited back for our spending, every year. Pay the card off in full every month.

He doesn't have the app but we log into Barclaycard on our pc and I am the one who checks and manages it, with his blessing. I also manage our (joint) current account and and our savings accounts. This is all with his consent , he prefers me to take care of it. He'll just look at it occasionally. I am the household admin person I suppose. We're both fine with that.

Chewbecca · 18/08/2025 10:59

If it is a joint account you don't need his consent to look at or access the account, it's joint. He 'consented' at the point of opening a joint account with you!

Pemba · 18/08/2025 11:06

@Chewbecca Yeah, I know that. I meant I also have consent to look after his credit card account, which is in his name, as there's no such thing as a joint credit card.

Technically perhaps I am not supposed to do that, but we are both happy with it.

Chewbecca · 18/08/2025 11:09

Well it is more about whether the bank / credit card provider are happy with it than whether you both are.

Pemba · 18/08/2025 11:18

I can't see it causing any problems so long as we are both open about it to each other, and the credit card company don't need to know?

HollyhockDays · 18/08/2025 11:41

So it’s not joint as people have said. I‘m an additional or named card holder. DH wouldn’t want the account linked to anything like YNAB nor would he want me logging in with this details. He is extremely anxious about cybercrime.

Chewbecca · 18/08/2025 13:48

Thank goodness someone (OP's DH) is aware of the risks associated with sharing passwords!

Pemba · 18/08/2025 13:54

OK, well maybe you could explain then? What might happen? What would be the scenario?

Chewbecca · 18/08/2025 14:09

Here's an extract from CAB's advice on getting money back if you have been defrauded.

(& if you think you would just lie and say your details were not compromised, it's very easy for the bank to discover if people other than the account holder have access to the account, for example IP addresses / CCTV etc. are checked in fraud cases).

Pemba · 18/08/2025 16:40

On a shared computer, same IP address, they won't know if it's me or DP logging in though. I wouldn't access it outside our home, or on the phone. I am not worried.

ohbee · 18/08/2025 16:42

What is he hiding? Why do you want access to it?

EverythingElseIsTaken · 18/08/2025 16:56

I’m an additional cardholder on DHs Amex and on the John Lewis card.

I can log on and check spending on MY Amex but only DH can see both cards. It was the same with the John Lewis card but I forgot my details so can’t look at it anymore.
We know each others email passwords etc. but never bothered sharing any others because we just show each other everything anyway…..

He’s not hiding anything. I pay a portion of the bill so I like to know what that amount is.
