Hopefully just before my 46th birthday. We've been saving like mad over the last few years and our fixed rate deal ends in January 2026. Plan is to pay off the balance then, which would be 2 weeks before my birthday (DH would be 45 too).

Mortgage (which was fairly small at this point) was paid off when I was about 50 (inheritance from dead mother). I’d had a mortgage since I was 23, so 27 years of paying.

whereareyousleep · 31/05/2025 22:08

I’m 39 now with 13 years left so 52 when paid off DH 55 hoping to have it paid off in 10 years as try and knock a year or two off when we remortgage. Though we are on 1.5% interest rate for another 2 years so see what happens then with rates etc. This is our 3rd house we lost money on the first 2 sales due to market at the time (1st house was 100% mortgage in 2008 Confused)but LTV is now 50% so should be good this time!

40! Which is obviously very exciting! (We’re moving from an expensive city to a much less expensive one to be nearer family)

BristolDolly22 · 31/05/2025 23:16

I’ll be 57, only a few years to go now. I have the exact date marked in my diary.

Femalefootyfan · 31/05/2025 23:28

Ours was paid off when we were 48/49, it’s an amazing feeling. We had overpaid for years and also had an offset mortgage which really helped.

CakeFace1234 · 31/05/2025 23:30

Hopefully by the time we are both 59. Just started a small overpayment per month, if we can increase this over the next couple of years it is achievable. House still needs work though so hopefully, we can afford to do both. It will be a HUGE relief when it is paid off.

kendalsj · 01/06/2025 02:01

We're due to pay off the mortgage at age 55/56, with our current level of overpayments (10%). We have enough money to clear it in full now (at age 45) but the money is making more in investments elsewhere, so no point.

countingthedays945 · 01/06/2025 21:33

61 but I’m 59 in January. It would have been 5-6 years ago but we bought a bigger house.

Yes I read articles at the time I was overpaying (almost zero interest rates) that I should have put the money in a pension instead.

However the relief that comes with owning your house outright is second to none!

We never overpaid. Despite being in the fortunate position of being able to pay the mortgage off years early, we let in run full term. Our money was making more elsewhere than we would have saved. Like other people on here, we were lucky with timing.

dontcomeatme · 08/06/2025 15:11

I'll be 57, OH 65

ErnestClementine · 08/06/2025 15:15

Late 50s if nothing changes but I'm aware a lot can!

MoominUnderWater · 08/06/2025 15:15

I paid my first mortgage off at 23yo but then bought another house which i didn’t pay off till I was 45yo. To be honest with the rise in food and energy costs I never noticed a difference when I did pay it off.
