Aiming for 46yrs. I would have been 41 if we'd have stayed in the 3 bed semi instead of moving up to the largest 4 bed detached.

TomatoSandwiches · 29/05/2025 14:49

Paid it off in 2020 which was literally the only good news of that year for us, both mid 30s at the time.

Charcol · 29/05/2025 14:57

gonna be 62... but defo need to make over payments to bring that to late 50s

FriedaMer · 29/05/2025 15:02

Nearly 70 for me but DH will be 60.

Lavachicken37 · 29/05/2025 15:14

When I’m 45.

deflatedbirthday · 29/05/2025 15:28

Hopefully 36/37 but that will be partly due to inheritance.

limecola · 29/05/2025 15:46

I was 45 when we paid it off. Now 47.

kellygoeswest · 29/05/2025 16:15

I'm currently 33 and looking to be 65 when it's paid, but I'm on shared ownership (I own 70%).

ADifferentKindOfMum · 29/05/2025 16:58

I’ll be 74.

fussychica · 29/05/2025 18:41
  1. Twenty odd years ago now.
Yuja · 29/05/2025 19:07

If our savings and overpayment plan work out I should be about 46, DH 52

Exactly this.
I don't get the point of these threads, tbh.

And yet here you are..

Our mortgage is with first direct and because we both have pensions (although I’m sure nobody asked how much they were worth…) we were able to get ours until we are 80!
We went for that as it reduces the amount we are committed to paying each month but luckily first direct let you make pretty much unlimited over payments (just can’t pay it off completely before the end of the fixed rate).
all being good it will be paid off in 4 years but if anything goes wrong we have an extra 30 years to sort out a plan b. I really hope we are not still paying it off when we are 80…

Agree (although tbh the thread title made me curious).
But, really, what is the point of the thread? I'm asking genuinely! No bad intentions at all!

Parky04 · 30/05/2025 07:53

Paid it off at 43. Got a mortgage at 23 and never moved.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 30/05/2025 09:42

It is interesting as rent/mortgage is such a big chunk of so many peoples monthly expenditure, when you get these “how can they afford x?” Threads it’s worth remembering that some people don’t have rent or mortgage to pay.

i’ll be 48/49 ish. I’ve got friends who are open about the fact they will be 60/65 or older before being paid off, mainly because they’ve moved to bigger properties or remortgaged to do work. We all have dcs we expect to go to uni. I do think there will be a big difference between those who’ve got mortgage free parents and those who don’t in terms of help given. Which will probably impact on their ability to save their own deposits and mean they are buying later, so mortgaged until older again.

Samesame47 · 30/05/2025 09:52

I was 42 when we paid ours off, whatever money was left at the end of every month went straight to overpaying the mortgage

Haveapotato · 30/05/2025 09:53

17 years - I'll be 69, DH will be 63 <sobs>. We are just about to increase our mortgage by £55k for our dream house. We plan to start paying chunks off it as much as we can, and see what happens tbh. We have enough equity to sell up and buy a cheaper house for cash and be mortgage free at a later point if it gets too much financially. Even if we have 10 years of living in dream house then downsize, I'll be happy!

DinoLil · 30/05/2025 10:11

I paid mine off when I was 46.

CatteryCatz · 31/05/2025 16:24

I’ll be 63, as things currently stand! I intend to overpay £6,000 soon, which will reduce my term by around 3/4 years.

I also overpay £10 each month, so it was take me to paying off my mortgage when I’m 59.

Schweden · 31/05/2025 16:32

55ish, in about 2 years, but we have only been here 12 years, this is not our first mortgage and we have completely paid off several others. We might pay it off earlier as we regularly overpay and then pay off extra chunks when we can.

Florabella · 31/05/2025 16:44

Only when I move house and downsize. I am on an interest only mortgage. When the kids leave home and don’t need it any more I will sell and downsize and will then be mortgage free (which needs to be in the next 17 years as that’s when it runs out). Not ideal, but I did what I had to to house the kids after a split

RedRaspberryPie · 31/05/2025 17:41

Hopefully 60 and husband 63, if we can carry on with our overpayments

I was 25 when we took out the mortgage and I remember saying at the time, omg I’ll be 50 when it’s paid off. 54 now, paid off aged 48.
