They’ve asked for 3 months of bank statements do they want to see my transactions so they can see what I’m spending my money on or do they just need to see my income

OP posts:
Acc0untant · 16/02/2025 17:28

I expect a combination of your income and your balances.

How do I do that and hide my transactions

what happens if family have given you money do they get funny about it ? I’m just thinking as often my dad will give us a few hundred at Xmas or for dc birthday etc ? Are you meant to declare it ?

Also if you have credit is that counted towards savings ?

Why would you need to? They don't care if the money is spent on gas and electricity or take aways. They're literally looking at income and balances.

You can't.
Statements have to be in their original, unaltered form.

Why do you want to hide your transactions?

I’m not sure you can ? It’s not an audit they can’t dictate what you spend your money on (yet!)

scanni · 16/02/2025 17:33

They don't care what you buy but they expect transparency, you can't hide transactions.

No, credit isn't savings and small gifts from family members (especially at Christmas) won't be an issue. They'd be looking at larger deposits that impact your savings, total balances, sometimes expenditure if they're concerned about deprivation of capital.

As long as you're not receiving thousands from undeclared sources or have savings over the threshold without declaring then they don't care if you're spending every penny in the bookies or buying takeaways every night. They're only reviewing for purposes of your claim eligibility, not analysing your spending 😊

Suzi7979 · 16/02/2025 17:34

They want full bank statement showing all in and outgoings. They might ask you about some transactions. It all depends on who is doing your review.

Hide anything and you are likely to make them more suspicious and possibly lose your benefits.

Thankyou. I think it’ll be clear as well as they’ll see the dates he’s sent me money is the dc birthdays or mine or Xmas ! But I wasn’t sure .

2024YR4 · 16/02/2025 17:36

I can’t see how there could be anything even that bad on your transactions @Ang3leyes ?

You're fine don't worry, as long as your family aren't aristocrats sending you £5k at a time 😂 it's simply about making sure you're still eligible and have been honest about finances rather than checking to see if you've had a few gifts or spent all your money on holidays etc. Nowt to worry about (as long as you've nothing to hide obviously) 😊

user1471538275 · 16/02/2025 17:41

They would be interested in transactions only if there is money being sent to someone where it is not clear why this is e.g several hundred pounds being sent to an individual every month for an unknown reason - they would simply ask you why.

Otherwise this could be seen as either deprivation of assets or if it corresponds with large deposits could be money laundering

Mingenious · 16/02/2025 18:53

They’ll need to see everything as if you’re routinely spending lots of money on jewellers/hair salons/hermes then you obviously don’t need universal credit. If your regular bills are utilities/lidl/the odd subscription or meal out, they aren’t going to care

When we applied for our last mortgage I had some transactions quibbled - it was my hairdresser who’s salon has the word gems in it - I like to think they thought I was buying lots of diamonds… I bloody wish!

They won't care where money is being spent, if you want to buy diamonds or get your hair done it's up to you. They will want to know if regular payments are being received and what they're for.

They won't accept statements if you hide your transactions. Is it a review or are you being investigated?

They don't care what the UC is spent on. People could be blowing hundreds on gambling and it's nothing to do with the DWP. They are interested in what money you have coming in. And of the transactions being made are you paying household bills. For example, if you're getting the housing element and then not paying any rent, that would be suspicious.

That is not true at all, and it dangerous to spread such nonsense when many people are worried about these reviews.
They just want to see that you are not working on the side, have someone undeclared living with you, or have undeclared capital. They will be more concerned with incomings than outgoings.
You could spend all of your UC on Lego, and they wont care. People on UC can use hair salons etc, and they can shop in places other than Lidl. I sometimes go in Waitrose, and spend far too much in Hobbycraft at times. That does not mean I don't need UC.

@Ang3leyes you need to show all your transactions, but the person reviewing them wont care how you spend your money.
Have a look on the BenefitsAdviceUK subReddit - loads of people posting about their experiences with the reviews on there. It is nothing to worry about unless you have savings over £6k, have regular income from somewhere that could imply you are working and not declaring it(friends can family can send you cash gifts so that is OK).

Your mortgage company are interested in what you are buying. UC are absolutely not. The criteria for whether or not you qualify for UC have nothing to do with your bank transactions.

Bromptotoo · 16/02/2025 23:50

Just send the statements and save worry time for if they ask questions.

They're certainly not bothered about where you shop, what you buy - unless it's silly and beyond exorbitant - or what your kids got for Christmas

Why do you need to hide anything? It sounds as though you’re falsely claiming and are about to get caught? I can’t think of any other reason you need to hide transactions?

You have to send everything in. Not hiding anything at all. I had a payment transfer into another account when I got some backpay at work. That money is gone now, the account is empty but they still wanted the full statements for it.

Ok print out your transactions and show them round the place to show what you’ve been spending your money on
