They’ve asked for 3 months of bank statements do they want to see my transactions so they can see what I’m spending my money on or do they just need to see my income

Ok print out your transactions and show them round the place to show what you’ve been spending your money on

Honestly, the person reviewing your statements wont care what you spend it all on.
Ultimately, they just want to know you don't have too much in savings.

They've asked my daughter for her in-going and out-goings which is strange because I thought they only wanted to see what money is coming into her account

They want to see bank accounts, which will be both in and out goings. They wont care so much about the outgoings.

Well what choice do you have? Either comply or don't claim.

Vates · 17/02/2025 07:37

I can understand that it feels a bit intrusive but it is necessary. They won't be judging you on what you spend your money on but looking for undeclared income/savings or any other discrepancies. I just had to do it last month for a random housing benefit review and now I'm switching to Universal Credit have to show all my bank statements again. It's just something you have to do.

Unfortunately you have to accept some level of scrutiny when you’re being supported by UC as we are. I don’t feel particularly bothered about my outgoings being viewed but it’s quite boring (bills, Tesco, Argos, Asda, occasionally maybe once every 3 months a takeaway) I mean what’s the worst you could have in there ?? Gambling maybe but even then they won’t sanction you ! It really won’t be that bad @Ang3leyes

I have done this in the past when applying for a mortgage...my bank statements were seen by our financial advisor and the prospective mortgage company.

You are only showing them to an advisor not "showing them round the place"

Its honestly not an issue and trying to hide transactions would make you look like you had something to hide.

Dont worry about it, they will see hundreds of bank statements a day

If you want to receive benefits you have adhere to the rules whether you think it's fair or not. It's the same as when you work. If you want to be employed and paid you have to adhere to their rules which can be really intrusive (drug testing, maintaining a certain look or letting them dictate/ scrutinise social media).
If you don't accept the rules you can end your claim or leave your job.
When they look at bank statements they look at what is coming in but can also look at payments going out (could be an undeclared mortgage rent or savings account). When applying for a mortgage I had to explain regular payments coming in and going out. I wanted the money so I had to comply even if I wasn't that happy about it.
I would say that if you try and hide transactions it will make your adviser look more closely.

HaddyAbrams · 17/02/2025 10:07

When UC looked at my bank statements they questioned some incoming money (a friend had sent me money for my birthday for example so they asked what it was) and then checked a couple of the outgoings. My rent payment was one (a payment that matched the amount my rent is, sent to the person named as my landlord on my rent agreement should make it obvious, but they asked anyway). Then they queried why I'd sent money to someone. It was my mum and she'd picked me up some shopping. They didn't question the domino's pizza/macdonalds/ whatever small treat i may have had.

They’re not being shown around the place - they looked at by 1 case worker. Honestly don’t know what your problem is - unless you have something to hide/are being dodgy 🤷‍♀️

If you've been buying stuff from Ann Summers or have an Only Fans subscription I very much doubt they'll be interested, never mind bothered.

On the other hand if you've got undisclosed income and it looks as though you're putting it into a bank account that was not included when you applied for UC their might be stuff to follow up.

ok the truth is I bought something from an adult website and I don’t want anyone to know. I know they wont care but it feels intrusive.
I haven’t done anything wrong. But there’s nothing I can do. Nevermind

They wont care at all. For all they know, you could have been buying a present for someone else from there. Chances are, they wont even mention it.
I know if it was me, I would be anxious and blurt out what it was for in great detail!

HellofromJohnCraven · 17/02/2025 21:45

They are literally checking to make sure that you are disclosing income.
Dds she was asked about the money I gift her each month. Explanation, that it is a gift to help her with expenses was accepted without question. Her partner sold a car and paid off his loan with the money. Again explanation accepted.

scanni · 18/02/2025 08:37

Actually, I said they don't care what you buy, which is true, but they will be looking at your outgoings overall. If don't pay the usual bills/shipping etc they may question that, that's more for people who claim to be single but have a partner paying for things

2024YR4 · 18/02/2025 11:25

I think they’d only worry if you have for example no bills going out (eg rent, c tax, utilities etc)
