Partner has used Work Credit Card for Personal Expenses!

Charcol · 17/10/2024 05:30

Hes been called in for a disciplinary meeting to explain himself.

I have advised him to co-operate and tell the truth as best as poss. Its several transactions, including cash withdrawals. Although he has never tried to claim them as a business expense to recoup the money from work, and has paid the monies back after use.

However, the policy is no personal expenses!

What are the best options to avoid dismissal? Has anyone witnessed or seen similar scenarios? Advise would be much appreciated. thanks!

Indeed last year the OP had a wife on maternity leave and now they’ve got a male partner defrauding his company - hmmm

And in yet another, s/he is pregnant with a third child.

I can see how someone could make this mistake honestly, you're in a rush and use the wrong card. But he should've copped to it instead of letting them find out about it. Like sent an email to whoever reviews expenses "So sorry I accidentally used the company card not my personal one, how do I fix this?"

It's often not doing the thing, it's trying to cover the thing up or looking like you were trying to. He should say he panicked and he's sorry, it won't happen again.

It’s not a mistake. You’re BF is bulls**g you I’m afraid. The rest of you ‘accidentally’ using yours too. Seriously? I wouldn’t even have mine in my wallet when I reluctantly had one. I kept it locked away.

Absolutely possible to use by mistake. I used to have a debit card for the charity for which I was Treasurer. It was the same colour/bank as my personal debit card. On the way to a Trustees' meeting I used the charity's card to get a current balance at an ATM. I then went into the adjacent shop to buy chocolates for a friend's birthday and mistakenly used the charity 's card as it was obviously still in my wallet. Luckily I realised immediately and the shop refunded the account. If I had been with someone else and chatting I probably wouldn't have even noticed until the next statement was issued.

When it's all blown over one way or the other, you need to get to the bottom of why he's suddenly turned into an irresponsible dickhead.

I am the administrator of my company’s credit/purchasing card programs we have had loads of instances of people using the card by mistake, they pay it back and there are no repercussions. We did have one chap who used his card for groceries petrol etc over a period of about 6 weeks, he was spoken to by HR said he had some cash flow problems, paid it back over a couple of months, had an official warning but was not dismissed

Gillbil · 21/10/2024 21:11

Hope it goes OK 🤞

Yes, I was. For 15 years.

I told the Trustees was had happened as soon as I got to the meeting and no one was concerned in the slightest. It was the only incident in those 15 years where I made an error.

Thanks for all the comments... the good the bad and the goddam rude!!!!

We are working through the situation with his work and will provide an update when known.

I think it's clear what most people.think. and fair enough for your opinions.

Currently, undergoing investigations... and he has been as transparent and cooperative as possible.

There's not much more of an update currently.

Can you provide an update on how you went from having a wife to having a husband?

TheShellBeach · 22/10/2024 12:50

@Charcol I was hoping you'd clarify whether or not you've got a wife or a husband, and if you've had the third baby yet.

TheShellBeach · 22/10/2024 12:51

Also @Charcol are you still paying serious debts off, and how's the gambling addiction?

SadOrWickedFairy · 22/10/2024 13:59

AlexisP90 · 18/10/2024 22:30

Cash withdrawals are a total no no.

Also even if he clears the balance every month (if that's how it works for OPs DH - it's hard to tell) it's still "borrowing" money that isn't there to be borrowed like that.

The biggest issue isn't even the financial one - it's the trust

Yes the cash withdrawals are an absolute no-no. Cash withdrawals made to cover what the cash is being spent on, the untraceable element.

Plus it is not his personal card to do that with, it belongs to the company.

A certain creek and paddleless boat spring to mind.

oldmanandtheangel · 22/10/2024 14:25

'Best options to avoid dismissal'?
Come on. Would YOU want to keep an employee like this?

I know someone that did this, he hadn’t been paid for weeks and needed groceries. Different set of circumstances but I didn’t blame him!!
