Child element stop date?

Dockydooda · 26/07/2024 09:11

Good morning all,
My 18 year old son left college at the end of June, he is going on to university in September, does anyone know if the child element of UC stops from the date he left college or the end Aug this year?
many thanks

End of August

Starlight40 · 26/07/2024 12:06

I googled this with child benefit and I think it’s 31st August..x

Dockydooda · 26/07/2024 12:16

Thank you both, it’s confusing because in my journal it says ‘You may have to pay back any payments you received for the child when they were no longer in education’ .

I have looked into this so many different answers. But officially it seems it is the day their course ends if not continuing in non advanced education. And they need to make their own claim.
I've messaged my case worker not got a reply as yet.

Dockydooda · 28/07/2024 17:47

Thanks so much! I’ve messaged too, I’ll update on her once I get a response

You're welcome, it's such a minefield. I was on CTC when my older children went to university only migrated to UC last summer. It was straight forward last time, but not so much now. Best of luck to you and your son, we are just waiting on results day to see if he gets in.

Dockydooda · 28/07/2024 21:00

@Diddly233 Thank you so much! Best wishes to you too, I think the confusion comes when they ask if the child is continuing in education, obv a lot of people will class uni as education though it’s advanced so not applicable, would be so much easier if they carried the payments on until Aug 31st like they do with child benefit, lots of people are very worried they they now have an overpayment.

Unfortunately lot's of people will face over payment sadly. Whilst they are still housing and feeding an 18 year old for a few months before university. It really beggers belief. I'm considering writing to my MP probably won't get me anywhere.

Dockydooda · 29/07/2024 06:12

@Diddly233 writing to our mps is a great idea! For me I will lose well over £300 from when the CB ends too plus possibly paying back the overpayment!.

I've had a reply, so I'm going to do as they say. I'm still anxious I'll get and overpayment notice but I'll just have to wait and see.

@Diddly233 Ah brill I have my fingers crossed for you! I too am worried about paying back an overpayment on top of losing the element, have been buying bits that he needs for uni and this hasn’t helped lol, I work full-time but looking for part time work on top. Next year if my youngest doesn’t go to college it will be hard living off my wage

I'm going through the exact same situation at the moment so I thought I'd add my experience.

I spoke on the phone to an advisor earlier this week and she talked me through what to do on the app. She said the payments will stop for my eldest at the end of Aug but today I've received a message in my journal asking me to remove him under 'children' and add him as a non dependent. I've also received a statement saying I owe almost £300 in overpayment.
So confused as I thought it had been sorted, I've added a note to my journal asking for clarification but seeing as I never received a reply to a note I added in January I'm not holding my breath.

The system sucks, my son doesn't know what he's doing until we get his A Level results.

I'm worried and frustrated.

Dockydooda · 02/08/2024 20:33

@catchingzzzeds thanks so much for that info! This is such a common story, I still haven’t got clarification despite 3 phone calls and 3 journal messages.. they way it is worded is bad, it should be on one of those charts where you follow the arrows to find your situation, I flagged this point about the confusion with so many people the advisor, I thought it was end of Aug too, best wishes with it all!

I've just received this, disappointing but at least I now have it in black and white.
The statement doesn't say if they're taking the overpayment out of the next payment or spreading it out.

This is so confusing, so many people are being told different things. I've been told to remove my child on the 1st of September on my Journal by the service centre.

Makes sense it is when their course ends as many kids would be starting apprenticeships or starting working as soon as their courses finish.
If going to Uni I guess they just have to look for a summer job to help out, not always easy I know as I have a ds aged 21 at Uni who hasn't managed to find any work this summer.

catchingzzzeds · 03/08/2024 19:11

@Diddly233 that's what I was originally told too 🙄

catchingzzzeds · 03/08/2024 19:14

@Miley1967 my problem is I phoned to ask when the child element for my eldest would stop and they said the end of August they have now changed their minds and want last month's payment back. It's very stressful.

Dockydooda · 03/08/2024 20:28

@catchingzzzeds ahhh what a nightmare! , I had no mention of adding him back as a non dependant, I reported a change but think I just reported he had left education, they didn’t ask me to do that, I did hear once that they take back max 25% off your standard allowance per mth on overpayments, might be possible to ring them and sort a diff payment plan, I’m not sure

Not really all my other children went to university and the CTC ended at the end of August. I only migrated from CTC a few months ago so went 5 weeks without any money before UC payment not I'll probably have this taken off me. I work full time and part of my job involves recruitment. I wouldn't be employing anyone who wanted to work for only 2 months. As far as I'm concerned my child is still dependant on me until he goes to university.

catchingzzzeds · 03/08/2024 21:06

@Dockydooda I'm going to have to phone them and ask but I don't have a lot of faith in their advisors following my recent interactions!

Same

Dockydooda · 03/08/2024 21:11

@catchingzzzeds good idea! The ones that I have rung have tried to be helpful and been very kind but they were confused too, glad the calls are recorded! They said they can only refer me to message the case managers as they made the decisions, it’s really bad that you can’t spk to anyone who has final say on the phone, so many people are losing all this money plus are going yo have a percentage of overpayment on top.

Places employ students and casual staff all the time in busy summer seasons. It's casual work.

Yes of course it's really easy to get a job when you just left college before going to university. Are you for real?
