How much do you have saved?

bit if a cheeky question so feel free to scroll on!

how much do you have saved? We currently have 7k which is about 2 months expenses. I’m feeling more and more uncomfortable with this.

Are you all including what's in your pension pot?

JaninaDuszejko · 05/06/2024 05:37

Surely without age and income it means nothing. I'm in my 50s, DH and I both have good jobs and we have a 6 figure sum in savings (not inheritance) and a larger sum in our pensions. But at 29 we had only recently graduated from our PhDs and so had no accessible savings, minimal pension savings and still had student debt.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 05/06/2024 05:57

We have a lot of savings too but it’s all about context. Dh is retired and got a lump sum from his pension, I hope to retire early so we are saving to make that happen. We definitely don’t have enough for that and may never get there!

TheHeadOfTheHouse · 05/06/2024 06:03

I’ve got 10 years worth of outgoings saved.

so if neither of us worked and had zero income coming in, we would be ok for 10 years.

How does it help or reassure you even if 100 posters reply ?

I could come on and tell you I have £1million in my savings pot.
or
I could come on and say I don't have savings as I am in debt.

How does knowing either amount I made up help you ?

I think the OP is interested.

She's not looking for help or reassurance - but I stand to be corrected.

Absolutely bugger all but I live in the real world not MN world

Pigeonqueen · 05/06/2024 07:18

68p to be exact.

We are fairly low income and just live month to month, I’m on PIP and dh works full time. We don’t have a mortgage though so we don’t have that worry about things. If we had some sort of emergency we’d borrow from somewhere and pay it back as we’ve always done (both have good credit; some manageable debt).

liann34 · 05/06/2024 07:20

I wont tell you the figure but about 5 months worth. I'm a contract worker so I really try hard to put away a bit each month and it gets depleted if I have any gaps I work. Not had any gaps for a few years now so it has built up a bit.

decionsdecisions62 · 05/06/2024 07:28

About £16k but my 18 year old daughter has £13k in savings so I don't feel great about my pot. We have pension savings pots and lump sums etc though.

Cornishclio · 05/06/2024 07:34

Everybody's circumstances are different so I am not sure how the answer to this will help you. Two months expenses is a good start but I would try to build that up further.

We are retired living off private pensions although my DH gets his state pension. We have £10k savings allocated for a holiday (long haul) this year and £25k emergency savings. The rest of our savings are invested as a buffer to our pensions.

BigDahliaFan · 05/06/2024 07:36

DH and I both have about a year’s take home pay saved. But we’re old, that makes a difference. It’s a good feeling as we’ve been in much more precarious financial positions due to job loss.

Are you all including what's in your pension pot?

I don't include pensions when I think about how much I've got saved. That's because:
(a) I can't make head nor tits of pensions,
(b) my work pension is partly defined contribution so there isn't a 'pot' as such,
(c) I'm planning early retirement so my pension modelling never actually aligns with my plans meaning, basically, I know there's money there but no idea how much it'll end up yielding when I want it,
(d) I'm playing it safe and not counting on any pension being available when I'm ready to take it given how some pension schemes and pots have been handled.

When I say "This is how much I have saved" I mean liquid assets - £230K.
I don't take property (about £350K), pensions (£fuck knows), or company shares (about £1m) into account.

Tarquina · 05/06/2024 19:03

£260,000.
