How much do you have saved?

bit if a cheeky question so feel free to scroll on!

how much do you have saved? We currently have 7k which is about 2 months expenses. I’m feeling more and more uncomfortable with this.

I’m a freelancer, so around 18-24 months worth of expenses in case all my clients were to fall under buses/I end up in hospital or can’t work for any reason/ the work dries up /I’m replaced by AI/zombie apocalypse.

Probably a bit over cautious but I don’t know how long my skills will be in demand for as it’s a fast moving industry!

PissA · 03/06/2024 13:20

£230K

About £2k in premium bonds, £60k in Isas and about £240k in a property we rent out, so not strictly savings. Dh retired though so frankly should have more by our advanced age 😬

Charcol · 03/06/2024 14:27

only £1k. as im focused on clearing debt as a priority

Wow, I’m jealous! 😀

It all depends on your personal circumstances, priorities, and what you're aiming for though.

Me and DP don't have extravagant tastes, we haven't been on holiday for a few years because of our aging dog, and we live in a small-ish house. Our priorities are being happy day-to-day, our dog and retiring early.
We'd have a lot less saved if our priorities were different - if we were decked out in designer clothes, went of several holidays per year, and had a house at the top of our budget.

I really want to give up work. So I'm jealous of people with £2m+ because I could give up work comfortably give up work with that amount saved.

LyricalGangsta · 03/06/2024 17:18

£27.32

JayAlfredPrufrock · 03/06/2024 17:19

£161k

CheeseWisely · 03/06/2024 17:21

£30k between savings and premium bonds.

Fuck all pension though so doesn't mean much.

Bigredpants · 03/06/2024 17:23

The UK average is 11k. But about a quarter of people have nothing.
Anyway savings are only one part of security. You’d need to consider equity, income, pensions etc.
I have just enough.

namechangejustincase39 · 03/06/2024 17:26

I think we have about 60K in a savings account, and we have a house we rent out that can be sold immediately for 300K..

NewName24 · 03/06/2024 17:27

How does it help or reassure you even if 100 posters reply ?

I could come on and tell you I have £1million in my savings pot.
or
I could come on and say I don't have savings as I am in debt.

How does knowing either amount I made up help you ?

theaaB · 03/06/2024 17:29

We have £2100. This bothers me a lot as I work in finance. I'm also bothered we don't have large pensions but we currently have 2 nursery aged children costing £1300 in childcare. Imagine if we could save that money instead!
I'm very much looking forward to September when DC1 starts school and DC2 gets 15 free hours, think we might be £5/600 a month better off! This will allow us to start focusing some more on our savings.

What id love to know is, if someone has say £200k in a savings account, is that usually inheritance?

WTWGYLPAG · 03/06/2024 17:30

Nothing. Living pay check to pay check. Now that’s scary!

For me, no. We haven't inherited anything (all parents still alive) and its unlikely that we will do so.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 03/06/2024 17:40

Mine’s inherited

muddyford · 03/06/2024 17:51

£120k plus house worth £400k.

smallchange · 03/06/2024 17:54

About £30k.

Dh may have limited work next year though and ds1 will start uni so it's a deliberate buffer that we've saved hard for over the last couple of years.

Dh was unemployed for a few years so after he retrained and got back into work we paid down debt and then started saving the bulk of his salary.

One day I hope he'll get a permanent contract and we can actually start spending some of it.

Sosomuchpain · 03/06/2024 18:06

I was thinking this today!

even did a thread in aibu and was about to start one here as I had a minor panick.
dh and I have 20k.

we just payed out around 60/70k on clearing our htb, a new car and a holiday. Feeling the impact of that all at once and it’s making me feel queasy

Farmhouse1234 · 04/06/2024 15:53

30k in emergency savings. But OH main earner and job contracting and not much out there so quite likely to have long periods of now work.
we have some debt too (10k but on 0%)

paranoidnamechanger · 04/06/2024 16:56

£5.3K which for me is seven months worth of essential expenses. I’m aiming to get to £10K by the end of the year to feel a bit less insecure (single, no assets, variable income).

Cantabulous · 04/06/2024 16:59

£95k savings, mostly from recent inheritance. Also £800k equity and £340k SIPP (never had an employer pension). I’ve never had savings before and it’s an amazing feeling. Still, even at the age of 62, I’d rather have my parents alive than have savings.

Grinchinlaws · 04/06/2024 17:03

I’ve just hit 6 months expenses after a long time saving. I’d like to have more.

pjparty · 04/06/2024 20:20

I have always been very focussed on savings and investing. I have £12k saved for emergencies, which is a few months of spending, but much more in investments for the future.

LokiCroc · 05/06/2024 05:23

£40k. We hope to have £100k in 2.5yrs to repay the mortgage in full when the (ridiculously low) fixed rate runs out. Then we'll have more disposable income to save for a new kitchen, bathroom, roof, solar panels and windows, University costs for DC.
