Blue light card

mindexplode · 30/05/2024 18:01

My husband has just found out he can apply for a Blue light card. How do we use it as it appears you can get discount everywhere. Any hints or tips? Can we include the teens as friends and family?

Normally you just show the card and they discount at point of sale. Theres also an app where I think (not 100% certain tho) that you can buy stuff through, or will at least tell you where you can use it.

IIRC its only the cardholder that can use it, and some places will ask for additional photo ID such as a drivers licence to confirm that the person presenting it is the person eligible.

Unfortunately I am not eligible anymore, but it was well worth the £5 it cost me at the time. I used it for all sorts. Best one was 2 x family tickets at Wookey Hole, which gave us a a really decent amount off.

There is an app you can download and groups on Facebook with hints and tips.

I got 20% off in Levi's at the weekend. Definitely worth having.

Wilma55 · 30/05/2024 18:14

You can also get reloadable gift cards for some supermarkets saving 3%.

Littletreefrog · 30/05/2024 18:16

Log into the website/download the app. Its the easiest way to find out what discounts there are and also get discount codes for using online. You can link it to your Asda rewards app.

Thanks everyone
So I can link it to the asda rewards card and then basically check with dh before we buy anything, he's going to download the app to his phone

Yes, its not as good as it used to be at asda as used to be you got 10% off everything now its just certain things but the money off gets added to your rewards balance and soon adds up

LightSpeeds · 30/05/2024 18:36

You can get 20% off meals at a lot of pubs! 😀

mindexplode · 30/05/2024 18:38

With two hungry teens money off food and eating out is a definite plus

Blue Light card for teachers. I am tearing my hair out trying to contact the organisation behind the Blue Light Card. As a teacher (supply), they've rejected my proof but they've taken my fee (£4.99) from my bank account. I've raised ticket after ticket on the app, and even written a hard copy letter to them, but still nothing. The tickets I've tried to raise don't appear on the app on my phone. I've had an email with a reference number but that email says no replies to the email are possible. It's ridiculous!! Does anyone have any ideas please?

As it has become more widely available, then it seems more places are checking for further ID - eg your work pass or a payslip - which was very annoying when they first started doing it without telling people as most people don't tend to carry them about when going out for a meal, but, once you are aware, then it is just a case of remembering.

I mean, the card is only for the one person, so no, others can't use it, other than - for example - if the holder pays for everyone at the table, then the discount applies to the bill (or sometimes just the meals) so, by default, everyone benefits, but your teen couldn't go out without his Dad and use it by himself, it that makes sense ?

TheGander · 17/10/2024 21:48

I got one recently and not impressed, a flat no at Robert Dyas and Boots when I asked if they offered any discounts. Wanted to get something from WHSmiths and it was so complicated trying to work out if I’d get a discount from the Blue Light website that I gave up.

Mum2jenny · 17/10/2024 21:53

I’ve used it many times, but some places are happy to see a physical card. But others need you to have downloaded a thing( can’t think of its name but basically a bar code which you need to present to get the discount).

Alwaysoneoddsock · 17/10/2024 22:00

I’ve recently got one but can’t get into the app and like a previous poster can’t get a response from them. I was thinking I’d been conned.

Fenellapitstop · 17/10/2024 22:04

I use it mainly if I need to order anything online. I have saved a fortune on medication for the dogs. Days out have been a bit hit or miss though

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/10/2024 22:18

You go on the app, search the store, it will give you a code that you add at checkout.

pinksquash13 · 17/10/2024 22:48

River Island 15% off has been my fave.

FixTheBone · 17/10/2024 22:50

Had mine for 5 years, has paid for itself a hundred times over.

Samsung has some good discounts on big appliances, laundry, TVs etc.
Lots of smaller discounts on utilities, gorceries etc that add up, 20% off skechers I use a lot....

FluffBut · 17/10/2024 22:54

Aspinal 20% off!

EsmeShelby · 17/10/2024 22:58

I've had 30% off at seasalt. And sometimes good deals on cinema, did that online with code

caringcarer · 17/10/2024 23:23

Toby Carvery offers 20 percent off for the card holder paying the bill, so all meals for cardholders family get 20 percent off. Several other pubs offer similar. You need to download the app then search on the app for discounts and click to get a barcode sent to your email.

aintnospringchicken · 18/10/2024 00:08

I've got mine linked to my Asda Rewards app and have already saved a lot more than the £4.99 I paid for it.
I've also used mine in the USA and got extra discounts.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/10/2024 00:13

I've had 10% off Levis jeans , Clarks , Office Urban Outfitters for DD

I always ask , often they don;t even scan or look at the card , I look like a haggard old NHS bod !

pavillion1 · 18/10/2024 04:57

i wasn't overly impressed. i haven't renewed mine.

Angrymum22 · 18/10/2024 05:07

I haven’t renewed mine. It took so long to attach it to the app site that by the time it was sorted the benefits were no longer as good. I always forget to check offers and they are often retailer specific. Frequently found prices cheaper elsewhere.
I suspect the money they collect for registration and renewal means that rolling it out to more people has made it very profitable. The partner retailers have adjusted their discounts to account for this.
