Wrong birth certificate info/ UC

Hi everyone
So this is a long one. I had a very traumatic birth a couple of weeks ago, and stupidly went to get birth certificate the day after, on the way home from hospital. My baby's father and I don't live together, I have a council home with my now two children, and he lives alone. While getting the birth certificate, they asked my address and I gave them my baby's father's address as that's where we were going for a couple of days so he could look after me and help with the children. It didn't cross my mind (once again, very strong pain relief and ZERO sleep in 48 hours) to give them my address. Now on my baby's certificate, it says I live with his father. The certificate was given to me to check over but I didn't pick up on it then either as I was seeing double.

To claim child benefit/ add my child to my UC claim, they'll want to see his birth certificate which has the wrong address for me on. Will I get in trouble for this? I don't want it to effect my benefit because it has the wrong address on it for me. I can't afford to get it changed currently! What should I do? Do I just explain to them at the appointment? Please be kind, Just a tired mother making a genuine mistake.

I think to get it changed at this point you would have to pay to have it changed as they are pretty strict about the “you check it over and once confirmed it is done”. X

twinklelove · 11/03/2024 19:24

@Mrsttcno1 thank you, the error doesn't bother me as we're planning on moving in together at the end of the year, but I really don't want it to effect my housing benefit when they look at the certificate x

It will affect your housing benefit so you really need to get it sorted x

twinklelove · 11/03/2024 19:29

Thank you for the help @Mrsttcno1, will I just have to call the registry office and explain what happened? X

Yeah just get in touch with the registry office and they will explain what you need to do to have it rectified, the cost and how to make the payment. It will be either £75 or £90 x

My DC were born in 2004 and 2006 and have "usual address" for both parents.

Parents' address(es) and place of birth are all standard entries on a record of live birth and have been for a very long time.

Mummapenguin20 · 11/03/2024 20:15

I had a baby 4 weeks ago my address isn’t on it x

Anyone could split up or move at any time. The address on the north cart is irrelevant. Assuming you can provide your tenancy agreement to UC? That's what matters

OneMoreTime23 · 11/03/2024 21:11

So the father is supporting you, presumably practically and financially, but you’re claiming as a single parent? Is the other child his as well?

@OneMoreTime23 no, the other child is from a previous relationship but he's always treated her like his own! I did ring up to double check if I should still claim as he's still supporting me. The lady said yes just because we live in different households. I'm not one to try and grab money where I shouldn't be getting it. I assure you I called up and checked :)

@liveforsummer yes I have it out ready as I'm a serial panicker! I did wonder this! I have my tenancy agreement and my updated rent price letter on my dining room table as well as council tax letter for April. Thank you for putting my mind at ease a little 🫶🏻

That's not how being a couple works for benefit purposes living in a different house isn't really relevant. Make sure you give the correct info that you are a couple when you claim.

Stonehill · 11/03/2024 23:07

none of my children have addresses on their birth certificates either - I have never heard of this

It is though. Separate houses and separate living costs aren't a couple as far as UC are concerned.

I mean, there's a fine line here, sure. But they only ask if you are living with someone as a couple.

Separate house and separate living costs are fine but the op said her partner was supporting her.

I assumed she meant physically. And if he gives her money then presumably its assumed to be maintenance. Which doesn't affect benefits.

Like I said, it's a thin line. But legally, for benefit purposes, she is single.

Probably a good idea to transfer money with the reference child maintenance. I am in now way judging I just know UC come down heavy on suspected single parent fraud so it's important not to rely on one advisor and give the full details when claiming.

twinklelove · 12/03/2024 15:23

@DragonFly98 yes I meant supporting me physically and he buys nappies, milk and clothes for the baby when needed. He doesn't send child maintenance.

Chewbecca · 12/03/2024 16:45

No child maintenance? He probably should...

Ruelzdontapply · 25/06/2024 19:11

I found out there I lived when I was a baby from my birth certificate cause it's in there.
All my kids have an address on to all UK birth certs

Marmight · 26/06/2024 16:27

Did the baby's father go with you to the registry office and is he on the birth certificate?
