How much would you pay for a second hand chest of drawers?

It's a very nice one, think it cost near a grand, 4/5 years old.

They're asking around 500 and we are collecting. Is that a mad amount?

Thanks

I would expect to pay less than half the price of new for something second hand, yes. Is it comparable for other furniture of the same brand and age etc. online?

inkblackheart · 11/03/2024 09:38

Impossible to say because it entirely depends on what it is, what its made of, how popular the style is, how large it is etc.

I generally pay up to about £300 for old dark wood furniture but that's antique stuff. If its just modern stuff I wouldn't pay that unless it was really lovely.

yikesanotherbooboo · 11/03/2024 09:55

It does sound rather a lot but there are some good quality furniture makers whose pieces keep their value over decades so that could be the case. Look around on line to see if you can find similar. Having said that, if you like it and it is what you are looking for you could easily waste £300-400 pounds buying something new that would have no value whatsoever from the moment that manors are exchanged.

Allshallbewell2021 · 11/03/2024 09:58

Much appreciate this advice. We have all hand me down furniture of very varied quality (!) and age so we are not used to spending real money. Buying out sofa was the biggest spend we've ever made.but this is a good looking piece and it's a good name.

£500 sounds a lot for something that cost £1000 five years ago. I'd normally be thinking around 30% max but if you love it and it's in good condition then you don't need to question it.

What type of drawers are they?

We get incredible items of furniture listed on our local Facebook pages. You have to be quick though.

WhizzWoman · 11/03/2024 11:01

Can you link a picture?

cordeliachaseatemyhandbag · 11/03/2024 11:55

That's bonkers!

Allshallbewell2021 · 11/03/2024 12:13

I feel it should be more 150/200 if we are collecting - but it is a good quality one, I don't want to ID myself by posting a picture!

It depends on quality and condition, not age.

A carpenter-made chest of drawers will last 100 years, so I would happily pay 50% if I wanted that piece.

A commercially-produced chest of drawers would probably not last as long, so you have to assess the life left.

Basically the better quality the piece is to start with, the higher the secondhand value it retains.

CrotchetyQuaver · 11/03/2024 12:23

I have bought quite a lot of Ercol Windsor furniture which is crazily (unaffordable to me) expensive new. Secondhand pieces in very good used condition in the lighter colour are usually less than half of what they would cost new.

So yours sounds expensive to me.

anunlikelyseahorse · 11/03/2024 12:28

I think it depends, mass produced from MDF totally bonkers.
Semi mass produced from hardwood in A1 condition, reasonable
One off piece made from reclaimed timber or native hardwood good value.

WhizzWoman · 11/03/2024 12:36

If not a photo then what about a description. As a op mentioned some furniture retains its value. Not sure about something that's only 4 or 5 years old though.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 11/03/2024 12:43

If you know it cost close to a grand and you really like it then 150-200 seems too little. Where else are you going to get such a nice piece only few years old for that money? Most people don't sell things that soon after buying them, so most good quality stuff that gets re-sold is usually pretty dated in style or comes with a fair amount of wear and tear.

I think around 50% of original value is reasonable h if it's still in immaculate condition and the style is still very current.

But if you think that's too much try offering them 350 and be prepared for them to ask for 400.

Sundaygettingreadyfortheweek · 11/03/2024 12:45

Around 25% of the original price.

caringcarer · 11/03/2024 12:50

I never mind paying half the original price if it's in absolutely mint condition. If not then 40 percent seems about right to me.

Allshallbewell2021 · 11/03/2024 13:37

This all helps, I now have to work out the collection and the moving and how we do that! Would you offer less if you were collecting?

OP posts:
LightSwerve · 11/03/2024 13:59

Depends how far and how much faff.

Do you own a car it would fit into?

No. Collecting is irrelevant to the price (unless it was offered with free delivery.)

Allshallbewell2021 · 11/03/2024 18:26

Thank you, I think it will fit in our car.
So collection is extra, thank you, I'm a novice at this.

Erm I might have miss understood you, collections will cost you your time and fuel, but they shouldn't be charging you a collection fee. Seriously if they charging you to collect the item, they're having a laugh, and I'd be telling them to stick it!

VelvetandLace · 12/03/2024 00:16

I think it’s a lot unless you really love it.
Or it’s the right piece for the right place in your home and is going to do a good job for many years.

Pumpkintopf · 12/03/2024 00:19

If the item was offered for sale buyer collects then obviously it's your responsibility to sort collection.
It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it and I agree with pp, without a more detailed description no idea if it's good value or not.

Allshallbewell2021 · 12/03/2024 08:48

No, what I meant is - if you have to pay for delivery can you take anything off the price - but the advice is no - thanks.

Lifebeganat50 · 12/03/2024 08:56

The most I’d pay for what you describe is £200

Its second hand and has been used for 4-5 years

WinteryConditions · 12/03/2024 08:59

Can you say roughly what it is?
