Insuring DD on our car - struggling!!

WindUpBird · 12/02/2024 16:46

DD was with Marmalade as a learner, she’s now passed but our current insurer won’t allow us to buy a ‘new driver’ policy through Marmalade. So far, all the other insurers I’ve called have said the same. So who will insure 2 parents and allow a teen driver to take out a Marmalade policy for the same car??

I’ve spent 2 hours on this so far, so any help would be fabulous!

Why are you sticking with Marmalade?

Will no insurer cover your car for you and other parent plus DD?

We had that variously with Elephant, Admiral and LV.

xyzandabc · 12/02/2024 17:33

Can you add DD to your existing policy?

Or find another company that will cover you and DD, once that's all set up, cancel your existing one?

Cookerhood · 12/02/2024 17:34

Yes, I think you have to move to a regular insurance policy once they pass. Marmalade etc are specifically learner insurance.

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 12/02/2024 17:35

Agree with the above. I don't believe you can have two policies for one car. Marmalade is for learners so you'll need to move the entire policy to someone new for the three of you.

Floralnomad · 12/02/2024 17:36

She needs to be on your insurance , I’m not sure you can have 2 insurances on one vehicle when everyone is a qualified driver .

Birdsworth · 12/02/2024 17:36

We got our insurance through Admiral after dd had passed.

WindUpBird · 12/02/2024 17:38

We can add her to our existing policy but the quote was £3.5k Other insurers have quoted up to £6k to insure the 3 of us.
Marmalade offers a kind of ‘pay per mile’ policy which is much, much cheaper provided she is not the main driver and her stats are automatically uploaded via Bluetooth. However, it’s worthless if I can’t insure DH and I 😆

Thanks for all the replies, Marmalade offer new driver policies as well as learner ones.
I’ll try Admiral @Birdsworth

Have you tried Ageas?

WindUpBird · 12/02/2024 17:41

@CoffeeBeansGalore thanks, I will do

What car is it? And how often is she going to be driving it? IE presumably you’re the main drivers and she will be an occasional driver.

We found Admiral good as well. However, we found we needed to move the whole policy to a new company and get a partial refund on the old one. At 18 she got her own car and was paying £660 as part of a family policy. Great value

C00k · 12/02/2024 17:44

A car cannot be insured by 2 policies at the same time. The owner and registered keeper insures it in their name.

WindUpBird · 12/02/2024 17:55

Marmalade do offer policies for young drivers to use their parents’ cars:

My problem is finding an insurer which will insure us, the parents, and allow her to have the Marmalade ‘bolt-on’.

Discover the right insurance for you | Marmalade

Answer three quick questions and we'll let you know what Marmalade products may be just right for you - whatever stage of driving you're at!

I use Veygo (Admiral) for my son when he needs to use my car, there are various options for duration of cover.

WindUpBird · 12/02/2024 18:40

Thanks @Electriccircus I’ll try them - just had for a quote from Admiral for us & DD - £14k !!!!!

We use Veygo as the 'bolt on' and find it excellent. You can insure for the month, week, day or even hour.

Can you ask Marmalade what insurers they know offer this?

CoffeeBeansGalore · 12/02/2024 20:01

When ds first passed at 17 we were insured with Tesco. They were willing to put him on the insurance as a named driver with both myself & dh for a total of £1700 per annum. Just myself & dh was just over £200.

Princesspollyyy · 12/02/2024 20:09

You don't need to find an insurer that will allow you to have the 'bolt on'. Just make sure there is a main insurance policy in place that covers you and your dh, then go on the Veygo website to purchase the insurance policy for your child.

You just have to declare who the main insurance policy is with, that's all.

WindUpBird · 12/02/2024 21:21

@NoSquirrels yeah, I did ring and ask but they were not allowed to say…

OP posts:
WindUpBird · 12/02/2024 21:23

@Princesspollyyy thank
you, but all the insurers I spoke to said that I couldn’t do this. I’m just worried about invalidating our insurance if we choose to insure DD with marmalade ( will also look at the Veygo option)

We've just got new driver insurance for our DD (and us as well). Just did a quote through confused.com and compare the market and picked the Tesco policy. It is a black box one though and the black box monitors everyone's driving. Cost about £1700.

How odd, I've had no problem at all doing this.
