Hi,

DH has a best mate who is quite recently divorced and rebuilding his life- lovely guy.

he needs a new car but can’t get finance so he’s asked DH to take the finance in his name.

im dead against it but DH thinks I’m being unfair. AIBU

no no no

your DH will be responsible for this debt

Abra1t · 11/01/2024 15:55

Absolutely do not do this! If he can't get finance, there's a reason, and if he stops paying your husband the monthly amount for whatever reason, and you have to default, it's your husband's name on the credit rating, not his.

Musiclover234 · 11/01/2024 15:55

Nope no way

NeptunaOfTheMermaidBattleSquadron · 11/01/2024 15:56

Fuck no! Only an idiot would do this! Tell him to buy a banger like everyone else has to when they have poor credit history.
Edit: Misread OP

Floralsofa · 11/01/2024 15:57

My mother did a car lease for my brother, he wrote the car off in suspicious circumstances, insurance wouldn't pay out and she was left owing £25k to the lease company.

betterangels · 11/01/2024 16:02

Only if you have separate finances. Otherwise absolutely not!

Beamur · 11/01/2024 16:04

Only if you can afford to pay it and take the hit on your credit ratings if he doesn't pay/writes the car off.
Recipe for messing up a friendship too.

p1ppyL0ngstocking · 11/01/2024 16:09

Noooooo.

If DH's friend had good credit, he'd be able to get his own loan, the fact that he can't shows that he's probably defaulted on loads before &/or can't afford to pay the size of loan that he wants.

Do not lend this money!

LightSwerve · 11/01/2024 16:12

No. Absolutely not, never.

Would your DH do this if you disagree?

SKG231 · 11/01/2024 16:16

Do NOT do this!

Hatty65 · 11/01/2024 16:16

No. Absolutely not.

Pigeonqueen · 11/01/2024 16:20

Nooooooo….!!

Absolutely no!

KitchenSinkLlama · 11/01/2024 16:21

A lovely guy wouldn't put a friend in this situation.

betterangels · 11/01/2024 16:22

KitchenSinkLlama · 11/01/2024 16:21

A lovely guy wouldn't put a friend in this situation.

Exactly!

bendypines · 11/01/2024 16:25

Nooooooooooooooo. No again. Bad idea all round.

Why does he 'need' a new car anyway?

HellsToilet · 11/01/2024 16:29

How much are we talking here?

kweeble · 11/01/2024 16:30

No way!

Florida28 · 11/01/2024 16:33

Absolutely not... his best mate isn't even a mate putting him in this position. He clearly has financial issues if he can't get credit himself, how does your DH plan to pay it if his mate can't?

blackpanth · 11/01/2024 16:34

Hell no

Winter2020 · 11/01/2024 16:36

No way.

If they are close and you are pretty wealthy it would be better to buy him his choice of a cheapish car outright and in his name (say up to 4k) and tell him to pay you back when he can - accepting that you might never see the money again.

Finance for a fancy new car costing 25k plus not a chance.

Silvers11 · 11/01/2024 16:37

Another one saying No, no no, here. The guy can't get finance for a reason.

Out of curiosity @Sycamoretreat - how much are we talking? Enough for a banger or a brand new vehicle?

PossumintheHouse · 11/01/2024 16:38

No. No. No no no no no.

Give your husband a metaphorical smack on the head. He’s just begging for some serious debt if he goes through with that. Debt you’d also be liable for.

Kwasi · 11/01/2024 16:39

Nooooooo

itstooearlytobeawake · 11/01/2024 16:40

No. No way. Never. Better off lending him £1k for an old run around if you could afford to lose that for a friend.

Sunflower8848 · 11/01/2024 16:41

Nooooooooo! Disaster waiting to happen!!!!!
