Car Insurance- for teen dd ££££

guessagain · 28/09/2023 10:44

Yep, that!
So far cheapest is £3,075 (using compare the market & confused) for year. They add £400 extra if you pay monthly. I believe that’s with a black box, which isn’t ideal for dd as she works in a hotel & finishes at 1 - 2am some shifts. That’s also with her as main driver (dh says it’s better as her as main driver so she can build her up her no claims over the year as she can’t do that as a named driver) my dh & myself as named drivers. It doesn’t make much difference to the quote having him as main driver anyway.

The cars she’s looked at are about £2k to £3k & are 1.2 - I know having a 1L will be cheaper.

Is there anything else or somewhere else we can try to bring insurance down? Any tips?

Try a broker?

Adrian Flux is said to be good for young drivers.

Is Pass Plus still a thing? When I passed 20 years ago it was and you did a driving course which entitled you to a discount of one years no claims.

My 1.1 litre Fiesta went from £1400 to £969 with that (which was still about half as much again more than I earned in a month!)

Only certain insurers would offer it though. And in those days you had to ring round them all... Ugh.

Definitely worth looking into to see if it's still around, as well as for the extra driving tuition.

Comefromaway · 28/09/2023 11:14

The cheapest way we have found is to have Admiral multi car for all cars in the family.

Xenia · 29/09/2023 21:11

We never had any of our 5 children ( all passed test at 17 as did I) on their own car and instead they shared one of our cars and were an additional driver - even that was expensive but nothing like as bad as if the car were just in their name. Nowadays the youngest is 24 and the car he shares with his twin is in his name with his twin and I as additional drivers.

50lessfat · 30/09/2023 09:25

I think marmalade does pay per mile it’s expensive but if she is only driving it to work and back might be an option for a couple of years.

PerfectMatch · 30/09/2023 09:28

Keep looking - that's a lot more than we're paying for 17yo DD with Sterling insurance. He does have a black box though - I don't understand why leaving work at 1am means she can't have a black box?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 30/09/2023 09:43

a black box doesn’t necessarily have limited hours of driving. Our ds’s with marmalade doesn’t but does have limited mileage.

Admiral multicar ,NFU, Sheila’s wheels and direct line have all come up trumps for friends’ kids recently

it’s not necessarily the engine size that dictates the cost either. Some different trim levels or special edition cars can cost a lot more. Check carefully before you buy - 2 very similar looking cars can have very different insurance costs.

good luck!

Nemesias · 30/09/2023 09:43

if it’s your teens car and they’re the main user you can’t insure it in yours / your DHs name with them as a named driver to make the premium cheaper. That’s called fronting and it’s fraud. When the insurance company find out at the very least they’d cancel the policy but they may also prosecute. I know you said you aren’t going to do that on the basis of cost but just in case you decided to go down that route - it’s illegal

Patchworksack · 30/09/2023 10:05

If you haven’t got the car yet look at insurance group 1 cars. We have been pricing up for DS and it makes a big difference from say a 1.2 litre Corsa. We got a 1 litre 3 cylinder Toyota Aygo and on price comparison sites we could insure him as an 18yr old new driver for just over £1k. It cost us £40 to add the car to our multicar policy for parents to drive and we’ll get learner insurance until he passes.

gotomomo · 30/09/2023 10:19

Look at ford ka, that used to be the cheapest. Make sure you add at least one parent as a second user (not primary, that would be illegal) as long as they have 5 years accident free.

I used admiral multi car, was £700 but dd was nearly 20 by the time she passed due to covid delays (car was group 8) no black box or restrictions.

gotomomo · 30/09/2023 10:22

Price is quite location dependent though - dsd's insurance nearly halved when she changed from her university address to ours when she graduated (over £1000 to £550, same car, same no claims, mid year for her insurance.)

KnittedCardi · 30/09/2023 10:33

DD's Fiat 500 1.2l is £1.5k with our LV multicar standard comp policy no box. It actually came down a bit when she changed address to uni address. She is 20 and only passed in the summer.

thinkfast · 30/09/2023 10:38

Maybe get her insured as an additional driver on your car for a while before getting her a car? After she's got a few years of clean driving history hopefully the price will come down a little.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/10/2023 08:32

If the car she's looking at is something like a Corsa, I think they're expensive to insure because they're popular amongst teens to race around in.

Look at VW Up/Seat Mio/Skoda Citigo (all same car), the tiny Citroen/Peugeot or Toyota(?) again that's all the same car, or something unfashionable like a Yaris or Micra with the smallest engine possible.

Might it be an option for her to be a named driver for a year or two on one of your cars, so when she starts with insurance in her own name, she's not completely inexperienced and hopefully hasn't had any accidents or points.

No option of the hotel giving her a lift home? I've known a few hotels where staff starting or finishing outside public transport hours are given lifts by one of the night porters, or have taxis paid for.

Just to add to this. Certain insurance companies award name drivers no claim bonus. I know Admiral does. Worked there for seven years.

Put yourself as policy holder and add them as name driver. Don't put student down as occupation if you can. Do they have a part time job? Go with that if you can. Will most likely rate lower compared to being rated as a student.

If you have a drive on your property tell the insurance company it's parked on a drive.

If they ask you do they have access to other vehicle say yes. Makes the price go down.

sleepyscientist · 01/10/2023 09:42

What is the car? Picking something not popular with teens often helps. If the car is only 2-3k go third party fire and theft only as replacing it will be cheaper than the insurance.

HarrietofFire · 01/10/2023 09:48

The cheapest is to get her own insurance and add you as a named driver.

redcess · 01/10/2023 14:39

My 17 yr old son is the named driver on his 1ltr car. Passed in the summer and insured through a company called Wise for £1.2k
He has a black box but it does not restrict late night driving

We used Admiral for dd (not the multi car one) and it was about £680 the first year she passed with her as a named driver. That was a 1.3 car. What make/model is it because I think that can make a difference. 3k is crazy.

Xenia · 02/10/2023 08:20

We have never done "fronting" mentioned above. Like most houses we have never had a car per each adult person and therefore a parent's car with child having right to drive it too is what we have done and it worked well. I was also on my mother's car as a teenager. I appreciate not all parents want their child also driving their car, but it is one solution that is cheaper and works. Also the child has probably been practising in that car too. We tended to have one big family estate car and then a small run around (in my mother's case she had a mini) and it was the latter on which we put the teenagers (we had 3 children born in less than 4 years so a lot learning to drive or new drivers at anyone time).

VisaWoes · 02/10/2023 08:25

While what Xenia talks about doing is perfectly legal and will be cheaper I guess it doesn't give them a no claims bonus build up. So a few years down the line you're back at square one though they will be a bit older which might help a bit.

Inastatus · 02/10/2023 08:35

@OnlyBoobsandBabies I think it’s cheaper for students. We have just renewed DD’s insurance, she recently left 6th form and has a pt job and when we updated her information her quote went up by £200!

@guessagain try Tesco Bank Box. That was the cheapest for DD and there is no curfew for night time driving.

Plus with just about everyone carrying a GPS tracker round with them all the time, very easy to detect. They know if you do that journey regularly, where you live, work, socialise etc.

Americabound · 02/10/2023 08:42

I think insurance has really shot up over the last few months. We were looking at buying a car for our teenager in the summer - but they failed their test. At the time I think we were quoted about £1.2k for a fiesta. Looking again now with same details and price has increased significantly. To about 1.8k.
