Car Insurance- for teen dd ££££

Yep, that!
So far cheapest is £3,075 (using compare the market & confused) for year. They add £400 extra if you pay monthly. I believe that’s with a black box, which isn’t ideal for dd as she works in a hotel & finishes at 1 - 2am some shifts. That’s also with her as main driver (dh says it’s better as her as main driver so she can build her up her no claims over the year as she can’t do that as a named driver) my dh & myself as named drivers. It doesn’t make much difference to the quote having him as main driver anyway.

The cars she’s looked at are about £2k to £3k & are 1.2 - I know having a 1L will be cheaper.

Is there anything else or somewhere else we can try to bring insurance down? Any tips?

Plus with just about everyone carrying a GPS tracker round with them all the time, very easy to detect. They know if you do that journey regularly, where you live, work, socialise etc.

Exactly, it’s not hard for insurers to spot. It could even happen if a curious employee happens to be looking at your policy and spots something untoward and investigates it. Then when DC has an accident driving to work, the insurance company finds out, cancels the policy, then you’re driving without insurance and get prosecuted for fraud.

Look at boring cars like Ford focus estates. As they're not a typical teenage car, statistics are on your side.

Blackbox if you can.

Will they actually be the main user of the car? If so, don't do the named driver thing as they usually know what you're up to anyway and don't reduce it.

Comefromaway · 02/10/2023 09:58

My son's friend has a Ford Focus and the insurance was cheaper than some smaller cars (he is a musician and this car fits his equipment in)

Visa, is right that putting the child on our second car has always meant for all 5 17 year olds they did not build up a no claims bonus. One of my twins only started building that up in his 20s (and his twin with whom he shares the car now has no no claims at all). We also always made sure our small car always had very low power and was n the cheaper insurance band too deliberately so each 17 year old learner did not make the insurance too high.

I sitll pay for the twins' car (until 31 December 2023 which will be the first time in years I will only be paying for one car which now sadly has massive outer outer outer London ulez charges on it but that is yet another story......|)

The cheapest way we have found is to have Admiral multi car for all cars in the family.

Second this- we also found this the cheapest way. Also named driver not main. We switched our DD to main driver after a few years nice she had built up the experience which dropped the price.

Just to add to this. Certain insurance companies award name drivers no claim bonus. I know Admiral does. Worked there for seven years.

Put yourself as policy holder and add them as name driver. Don't put student down as occupation if you can. Do they have a part time job? Go with that if you can. Will most likely rate lower compared to being rated as a student.

If you have a drive on your property tell the insurance company it's parked on a drive.

If they ask you do they have access to other vehicle say yes. Makes the price go down.

I’m also ex-Admiral and can’t believe you would suggest fronting!

If it’s her car and the main driver then what you did was illegal.

KnottyKnitting · 02/10/2023 10:21

No it wasn't her car. It was in DH s name

If she was the main user then it’s still fronting

The V5 isn’t proof of ownership.

Cookerhood · 02/10/2023 11:57

All mine had black boxes & jobs in pubs/restaurants so out late at night. Choose carefully & that shouldn't be a problem. Limited mileage? Mine all had 4000 miles in their insurance to start with which brought it down.

KnottyKnitting · 02/10/2023 12:03

OFGS!

DH bought the car and had a receipt to prove it and he was also named in the V5 as the owner of the vehicle.

He was the main user of the car.

I know all about fronting and I spoke to the insurance company about how much DD could legally use the car as a named driver. This is how we chose to sort her insurance for the first few years and it worked out cheaper. If that doesn't work for the OPs DD then my suggestion isn't valid.

Blocking this thread now as annoying me!

So she became the main driver of your husband’s car, @KnottyKnitting? The car wasn’t an extra one that she drove most of the time? Pull the other one.

user1497207191 · 02/10/2023 12:07

I don't suppose your own car is suitable to "give" to her is it? With our son, we kept an old car instead of PX-ing it as it was adequate for us, and we had a better "proper" car for family use. (Basically we've always had 2 semi-decent cars, but deliberately let one get older without changing it, with a view for our son learning to drive on it and using it). So we just put him on our insurance for it as an additional driver whilst he was learning, and the extra premiums were surprisingly low, then when he passed, the premiums went up a bit, but still affordable, helped of course by a full no claims bonus on that car! Even in his first year after passing, the insurance was only around £500 for fully comp, with three named drivers. He's now moved away and taken that same car with him, and we've bought a new car for ourselves to replace it at home - even though we've changed him to main driver status and changed address etc., the premium hasn't gone up - again helped by full no claims bonus!

You should have been clearer in your first post then because it definitely sounds like fronting. You can’t describe fronting then get annoyed with people for trying to clarify. that’s on you.

Sorry for delay in an update - we managed to sort it - insurance policy in her name so all above board with ‘ticker’ insurance - came out as cheapest - (around £2k) she has a little device which goes on her windshield & works alongside an app on her phone. She got a little Peugeot 107 & so far so good. Thank you everyone.
