For aeons I pay for almost everything on a card, but o sometimes come unstuck not having any money in my purse, lately I've been caught out by the tooth fairy a few times and have had to make a trip to the ATM then a shop for change, also hairdresser and tips etc

So how much do you keep in your purse ? And do you deliberately keep your purse topped up ?

I need to be more organised

Soz for boring question

About £30-£40

Roughly £200 and €200.

I got caught out a few years ago when the bank networks went down and I was stranded away from home. I also travel in Europe for work and had a similar problem when cards weren’t accepted for some reason.

But I also tend to buy and sell on Gumtree, which needs cash, so it’s handy for that too.

Cotswoldbee · 13/08/2023 00:36

Always keep about £50 in notes and £5 in coins.
I also have some notes in a "secret" compartment for emergencies, a £5, £10 & £20 but these rarely see the light of day. Only a year or so ago I had to take them into the bank to get exchanged as they were paper money. 😆

I use a credit card for everything as does DH because it’s linked to rewards on our cards. We pay off in full every month and have never paid a penny in charges. I did withdraw some money to go to a fete a couple of weeks ago but turned out most stalls had a machine anyway.

Over the years we have had multiple hotels, ferries, car hire and attractions free because of the rewards on our cards.

DiscoBeat · 13/08/2023 08:11

I think I'm pretty old fashioned but although I pay by card for everything I do still keep a couple of hundred in my purse and a float of £300 in my office in case I lose my card. Also handy for the window cleaner or delivery driver tips.

Or ally around £100 in notes and about £20 in coins and change

I need change for parking during the week as the app charges more to use

I live in an area where internet connections pretty shit a lot of the time so if card machines don't work I have the cash to pay.

I also own a business and the card fees are crippling now so I only pay cash to small independents to help keep their costs down.

I would encourage anyone that does try to use small independents to pay cash if they accept it because eventually the items your buying will have to increase in price because of the fees

What about the bank charges and other costs for them to handle and bank cash?

What about the bank charges and other costs for them to handle and bank cash?

I think the expectation is they will do the same, use it to buy things, pay the window cleaner/tip the hairdresser/waiter etc. just because it’s cash, as it doesn’t have to be paid into the bank, (and it’s recorded, obviously!).

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 11/01/2024 20:23

£100-200

Snugglemonkey · 11/01/2024 20:32

I have a purse, but it very rarely goes anywhere with me. I hardly take a handbag now. I have a small bag with baby changing stuff and rarely remember to stick my purse in. I use my phone. I do have a trolley token in the car too though.

JustCarryOnWalkingPast · 11/01/2024 20:33

Usually about £15-20 in notes, and about £5 in coins

Meadowfinch · 11/01/2024 20:36

Today there is £12, €17, and some small change.

I try to keep at least £10 handy.

MrsWidgerysLodger · 11/01/2024 20:39

Usually £10 or £20 in notes and around £5-£7 in coins. Been to far too many school events or had sudden "dress down day" etc sprung on me to not carry cash!

BobnLen · 11/01/2024 20:42

About £50, I have a large purse with all my cards and cash as I find it more convenient than using my phone, phone is ok if you only have a couple of cards but they are easier to see in my purse than fannying about in Apple wallet. We have more cash at home, I like to have cash, lots of cards and phone as backup.

BobnLen · 11/01/2024 20:45

When I was on holiday in Yorkshire I noticed a lot of independent shops and cafes preferred cash so made the effort to use cash as much as possible

Mumaway · 11/01/2024 20:46

I always have at least £20 plus a couple of pound coins. There's also a change purse in the car just for carpark emergency. I go to the bank or post office every few months and get £20 in pound coins which live in a drawer in the kitchen for delivery tips, teeth etc

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 11/01/2024 20:51

My personal marker is £30. So, dds sometimes need cash for the school bus, only because dh forgets to add tickets sometimes 🙄 so I give them cash, that and some clubs I pay for in cash,

AlltheFs · 11/01/2024 20:52

When I need cash I borrow it off DD (she has loads), otherwise I have none!
I do pay her back - my Dad gives her about £10 in coins every time he sees her. I borrow the coins if I need them and transfer it back to her savings account-don’t panic I’m not fleecing her! She is only 4 and doesn’t notice 😂
I will need a better system when she is bigger. But we have no cash point near us (rural) and I use applepay for everything. All the car parks here are on an app, I can go months without needing any.

Growlybear83 · 11/01/2024 20:53

It depends where I'm going but I like to have about £20 on me. We go to quite a few antique/collectors fairs, and a large proportion of the traders will only accept payment in cash, so I generally get an extra £50 out of the bank on the way.

Vates · 12/01/2024 06:38

I no longer carry a purse and haven't for a while. I usually have a £10 note just in case I need to pay cash for my bus fare and a change jar with enough for milk/whatever small thing needed from the corner shop. I just have my card holder with my debit and credit cards and the tenner stuffed in it.

I find tracking my spending by using a card so much easier for me as all the transactions and information is there on my online banking. I usually plan what I am spending before I spend it and then just double check everything went through fine with online banking.

Obviously card readers can go down in shops but that's only happened twice in my local Asda (in the 15 years I've been going) which is the shop I go to the most. They went down in my corner shop once and the owner just let me have the stuff and said I could pay tomorrow (I live opposite the shop so he knows where he could find me), payment machine was working fine next day.

Although I definitely prefer paying by cards, I still think that as a society we shouldn't go completely cashless as there should always be options/choices available.

recklessgran · 12/01/2024 22:25

Several pound coins and a couple of hundred in notes in my purse. I love a bit of cash. Handy for restaurant and hairdressing tips, odd bits of shopping and giving pocket money to DGC's. Any change we get below a pound goes in a pot at home and gets turned into Euros for holidays. We've also got a pot of parking change in the cars.

Bbq1 · 12/01/2024 23:29

Mostly card but I like cash. I have a small coin purse which currently has about £7 in it. Have a large purse i occasionally use, holds most of my cards. Phone holds my debit card and 2 supermarket loyalty cards. Ideally, I like to have £50 in the note bit. Going to draw some out tomorrow now! It's needed for takeaway tips, unexpected bills, a magazine and so on. Far, far easier to just spend with a card.

NewName24 · 13/01/2024 00:13

Generally around £20 in notes, then some £1 coins too.
More if I am going to something like a Christmas / Summer Fete where there will be stalls taking cash, or if I am staying in a remote place where the internet is intermittent.
But I'd normally have more cash at home if it were needed for something.

mondaytosunday · 13/01/2024 00:50

No coins - not since lockdowns. Get caught out occasionally at supermarkets that want a pound for the trolley. About £30 in bills but only use the money to leave tips. I no longer carry a wallet as my phone case has slots for credit cards and money.

Lifeintheoldclogsyet · 13/01/2024 13:12

I love cash, I usually take out about £100 and that does me for small incidental shopping, parking, lunch at work etc. helps me keep track

CalmBeforeTheCalm · 13/01/2024 13:15

I don’t usually carry any cash.
