For aeons I pay for almost everything on a card, but o sometimes come unstuck not having any money in my purse, lately I've been caught out by the tooth fairy a few times and have had to make a trip to the ATM then a shop for change, also hairdresser and tips etc

So how much do you keep in your purse ? And do you deliberately keep your purse topped up ?

I need to be more organised

Soz for boring question

I work in retail and daily see people who only have their phone to pay with go into an absolute meltdown when (for whatever reason) their payment is declined. We’re next to a cash point so I point them to that but no, the haven’t got their bank card with them. Or they pay by contactless but when the card machine prompts them to enter their PIN they can’t remember it.

I mean, by all means use your phone/contactless, but try and remember your PIN. Technology isn’t infallible. So for that reason I always have between £50-100 on me.

HalloumiLuvver · 07/08/2023 09:35

I don't have a purse. I have a few coins in a zipped pocket of my bag for very occasional things like parking if I can't get on the app, tips (although most tips are added on to the card payment now anyway) and I have an emergency tenner tucked behind my cards in my phone case. Which hasn't been used in goodness knows how long but it's there.

hexsnidgett · 07/08/2023 09:48

I've got a fiver in my purse and another one in the car with change in it for the toll or parking.
Like others say it's a good idea to have some, I spent a ridiculous amount on printing something out at a small library because I had to go and get cash then buy something to get change. The library staff looked at me like I was mad thinking they would take card payments!!
We're in a difficult transition with cash, some places cash only, others card only, hardly any cash machines, none in my village.

Peony654 · 07/08/2023 09:56

Zero. I don’t even know when I last had any cash or coins

DinnaeFashYersel · 07/08/2023 10:20

None

OldTinHat · 07/08/2023 10:26

I have £1 in my car for shopping trollies and that's it. I don't even take my purse out anymore, just my phone with cards in the case.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 07/08/2023 10:43

£ 50 at the start of the week for food shopping (which I prefer to pay for in cash)

johnnydeppsslipper · 07/08/2023 10:44

Or ally around £100 in notes and about £20 in coins and change

I need change for parking during the week as the app charges more to use

I live in an area where internet connections pretty shit a lot of the time so if card machines don't work I have the cash to pay.

I also own a business and the card fees are crippling now so I only pay cash to small independents to help keep their costs down.

I would encourage anyone that does try to use small independents to pay cash if they accept it because eventually the items your buying will have to increase in price because of the fees

Passthecake30 · 11/08/2023 14:44

I tend to carry £30-£40 around. For exercise lessons, parking, bits and bobs from the corner shop.

FLOWER1982 · 11/08/2023 14:48

Barely anything. Usually a few pound but that’s it for emergencies. Use card mainly.

In an emergency you would want and need more than a few pounds. What would the few pounds pay for? What emergency are you foreseeing?

Alwayswonderedwhy · 12/08/2023 21:49

Zero

keffie12 · 12/08/2023 22:01

I have a supermarket coin for the trolly, so that's solved with me. Like the OP, I'm often caught out. If I draw £10 out, it lasts me ages..

Snippit · 12/08/2023 22:11

I no longer have a purse with money in it, I have a credit card wallet. I do have a £5 note tucked in there for any small cash emergencies. I was sick of having a bulky purse in my bag to be honest.

JustCarryOnWalkingPast · 12/08/2023 22:30

I've usually got about £3 in coins, and a five pound note. Athe moment, I've got £25 in notes - DH won £50 on a scratch card and gave me half Smile

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 12/08/2023 22:45

Since posting on this thread earlier in the week I have acquired a load of cash from my elderly neighbour (for something I paid for online for her). I feel like I manifested that in some weird way!

Comedycook · 12/08/2023 22:51

Usually have about £5 in change

HarrietSchulenberg · 12/08/2023 22:51

Nothing since I had my purse stolen from my bag by a local purse dipper in the doctor's surgery. I only had £20 in it but it was all I had till payday, 10 days away, and I bitterly resent that thieving skank blowing it on booze, which is what she told the police she'd done when they caught her. I live in a small town where everyone knows everyone else so she was nabbed within 24 hours, but she still left me with no cash till I got paid.
And since then, it's very rare that you'll find me with any cash at all. If it had been in my bank she wouldn't have been able to get at it.

RuthW · 12/08/2023 22:53

£50-£100. Only because I do all my elderly parent's shopping, food and otherwise and they pay me in cash.

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 12/08/2023 22:53

Around £20-£40 notes and a ton of change.

Ambi · 12/08/2023 22:55

Around £40 in different denominations but it never gets spent. I'm all about the card payments. The cash is emergency only.

Nat6999 · 12/08/2023 22:58

I've got £8 in my purse & £30 in my phone case, the £8 has been in my purse for over 3 years.

JanesBlond · 12/08/2023 23:07

£10 note in case I need a taxi and end up in one that doesn’t take card, but that’s pretty rare nowadays. I never carry change around, my actual purse is just a card holder and I fold the tenner up to fit in. I have a token on my keys for a trolley instead of a pound coin.

Pinkitydrinkity · 12/08/2023 23:09

I think there’s about 40p in my purse. I use Applepay almost all the time and don’t remember the last time I opened the purse! 😂

Findyourneutralspace · 12/08/2023 23:12

The only time I have cash is when my kids receive it for birthdays and ask me to transfer it to their bank accounts.
