Have just discovered this thread! This morning we realised with our holdings we'd be earning far more in an easy access account at the moment so I'm contemplating drawing all ours out and have been looking around to see if others are doing similar which is how I discovered this post!

Have you taken tax into account? It depends on your holdings and tax band but if you are a higher rate tax payer it doesn't take much in savings to be paying 40% tax on them and at that point you might think premium bonds better (assuming ISA full)

CaveMum · 02/10/2023 16:40

Good article on the pros/cons of premium bonds v savings for those paying tax on savings here. The “rates” for premium bonds are a bit out of date, I think the equivalent is now something like 4.65% average return, though obviously not guaranteed: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/premium-bonds/

PriamFarrl · 02/10/2023 16:49

Also worth noting that with some higher rate accounts you can only do something like add £200 at a time.

benfoldsfivefan · 02/10/2023 16:49

Looking at the spreadsheet of high value winners again, the vast majority of winners have holdings that are six figures (I know I'm not saying anything new) whereas mine is four figures. I'll keep mine in PBs for now as I'd only earn a small amount of interest anyway in a fixed rate ISA but more importantly the fun element keeps me motivated.

Soapyspuds · 02/10/2023 16:57

£100,000 from £200
£100,000 from £900
£25,000 from £38 Purchased in 1970
£25,000 from £40 Purchased in 1957

I love seeing wins like these

That is roughly my take on the situation. Is a guaranteed £25,£50 a month or whatever it is interest from a savings account going to make a difference to my life? Nope!

I much prefer the chance to dream of hitting a big prize and still the chance of averaging a not too shabby 4% or whatever interest in the long term. Too many posters on here are far too swayed by their short term results.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 02/10/2023 17:03

You can’t have six figure holdings.

Yes, sorry, I meant five figures (haven’t slept properly).

yumscrummy · 02/10/2023 22:07

Not sure how much but I have won 4 separate prizes on 40k. Thanks to whomever said last month that you can log onto your account and look at the transaction history!

Wow and congratulations!

I am sure you will be planning to do important yet dull stuff, like mortgages and pensions (and hopefully a few charities), but can you 'fess up to the first frippery you ordered?

That first debit/credit card transaction

It's good to hear good news!

Do you mean for October? What does it show if not the amount of prize? On a 40k holding not a prize of 40k to the pp I think!

DawnAnn · 02/10/2023 23:28

Ooooh... When I log in and click on Transaction History it shows a £500 auto prize reinvestment with today's date. Hoping it isn't a mistake!

TwoItalianApples · 02/10/2023 23:32

Exciting! I have nothing hoping it's a cheery glitch for you

JayAlfredPrufrock · 02/10/2023 23:36

Which app are you seeing that on?

Fullfatandfortyplus · 02/10/2023 23:38

Ooh mines showing up already £600 on FH and £125 on FH. Still says September but that’s different amount to what we won in Sept so pretty sure this is Oct.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 02/10/2023 23:39

Which app?

It's when I log in on the NSI website. I can see it under the Transaction History.

Fullfatandfortyplus · 02/10/2023 23:42

I just google premium bonds prize checker and enter my holders number. Don’t have an app.

TwoItalianApples · 02/10/2023 23:45

Oh disappointing the prize checker and the app both show nothing

TwoItalianApples · 03/10/2023 00:01

Noting again on £10000.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 03/10/2023 00:02

Apple boy. £250.

Clickncollect · 03/10/2023 00:06

Nothing for me but I now only have £5,000 after spending a lot on home improvements this year. Planning on focusing on saving and building my premium bonds holding now for a good few months!

JellyBeanFactory · 03/10/2023 00:13

£50 on max holding. Humph.

HappyValleyFan1 · 03/10/2023 00:13

£175 on £30k, not bad, not thrilling!
