Fair way to split this holiday

Large group of friends and family going away this summer to Spain, groups as follows:

Family 1: two adults, 4 children. 3 rooms needed
Family 2: two adults, 3 children. 3 rooms needed
Family 3: two adults, 2 children. 2 rooms needed
Family 4: two adults, 2 children. 2 rooms needed
Family 5: two adults, 2 children. 2 rooms needed
Family 6: two adults, 2 children. 2 rooms needed

Altogether 12 adults, 15 children. Place booked has 14 bedrooms so enough for everyone's needs. Would you split evenly? Or another way?

Split the cost by 14 to get the room price then split according to how many rooms each family has

PinkCast · 11/05/2023 15:05

In my family we'd spilt it 6 ways, so evenly per family. Other way is to split it per room, so families 1 & 2 pay more. Neither is wrong, but it depends what is usual for that family group.

ThatFraggle · 11/05/2023 15:06

The two three room families are presumably doing a boy/girl split?

So each family gets 2 rooms and the one leftover goes to the boys/girls of the 3 kid families.

Each family pays for 2 rooms. The 3 bedroom families pay for an extra half bedroom each.

wobytide · 11/05/2023 15:06

Kind of agree with divide by 14 but if the rooms differ vastly in size or facilities then may need to consider a slightly different way

TeenDivided · 11/05/2023 15:07

I'd probably split evenly unless a 14 bedroom costs considerably more than a 12 bedroom.

However if the families with the extra children are also better off I'd suggest they e.g. each pay an extra £100/£200 and the other families £50 or £100 each less.

But if their kids are hungry teens they do need to pay into the food budget on a per head basis not per family.

CordyLines · 11/05/2023 15:08

I don't know. but others who do big groups might help you out. I'd be inclined to just split it evenly and get on with it, but then again those using three bedrooms should probably pay more - but mattymatix are not my strong point so I'll leave that to someone else.

You should also decide how day to day stuff is shared, either by even amounts in the kitty, or by numbers per family. Same for tidying up, cooking rota, etc.

I hope you have a great time. I'm reluctant to say how much I would hate a holiday like that (but there I said it!) but each to their own.

Bring ear defenders and a bucket load of valium. You can buy the grog there I presume. Anaesthesia is good for trips like that I'd say.

TeenDivided · 11/05/2023 15:09

With a villa it isn't all about the bedrooms it is other facilities etc too which are all communal.

Maths fail.

No family needs to share a bedroom.

So as pp said, divide by 14 then each family pays for the rooms they us.

The issue is if someone rooms are luxury en suites or master bedrooms, and some are box rooms or with a shared bathroom.

I wouldn't want to pay the £100 for 1 box room plus one double bedroom overlooking the bins and a shared bathroom, when the Smiths get a balcony en suite and a sea view single for £100.

HerMammy · 11/05/2023 15:12

Divide the total by 14 and pay the room cost relevant to each group

Sheepsheepeverywhere · 11/05/2023 15:13

Work out how much per night the villa is.
Divide that by 6. Each family pays 1/6.
Food charge by per head for the kitty.

QuickNameChangeForMeToday · 11/05/2023 15:14

It gets complex if there are some lovely rooms some ok rooms and some downright mediocre rooms.

I think I would suggest dividing the total by 19.5 and adults pay a full share/kids are a half share. So for example if it’s £12,000 total that’s £1846.15 a family of 4, £2153.85 a family of 5 and £2461.54 a family of 6.

TokyoSushi · 11/05/2023 15:15

Are all of the rooms similar? If they are, I'd divide by price per room and then you pay for how many you use. Or if there's not much in it just split equally per family.

OMalleysAlley · 11/05/2023 15:18

I would sooner yeet myself off a cliff than go on holiday with that many other people!

purpleboy · 11/05/2023 15:23

I'd split equally per family

CoronationKicking · 11/05/2023 15:30

Split evenly between 6 families but the extra kids from family one and two get the smallest/least desirable rooms

This seems like the fairest way to me. Bigger families pay more but not loads.

WhyOhWine · 11/05/2023 15:52

i dont think a split based on rooms is fair as the communal areas are shared (as already pointed out) and also not all rooms will be same size.
I would ensure the extra rooms for the 3 bedroom families are the smallest and then split per family, perhaps suggesting the 3 bedroom families treat everyone to a meal out or something.
Or the suggestion above about dividing by 19.5 is a good idea too.

You also need to think about food kitty.

We have done group holidays before. Most families with 2 children and 1 with 3. Generally we just split per family (including food kitty) but the parents with 3 children voluntarily paid for the odd meal out and bought some booze for the adults outside the kitty.

afrikat · 11/05/2023 15:54

Thanks all, some mixed views so far..

In terms of how the rooms are, they all look pretty nice from the pics but realistically hard to tell til we get there. Haven't quite decided how to do room allocation yet 😕

In terms of food we are getting most of it catered and paying for that per head

Totally get this kind of holiday isn't for everyone but we are looking forward to it 😀

Maybe you could ask which of the rooms have a nice view/en suite bathrooms/balcony.

In Europe they often have the actual size of the room in area, if you ask the owners they might give you this.

You could even tell them, we want a fair allocation for the families and are deciding how to split rooms. They might have good suggestions.

What you don't want is the Joneses rushing in and bagsying three balcony, sea view en suite rooms, and by the time the Smiths get in they end up with three box rooms overlooking the car park, none of them next to each other, and they are next to the living room.

Decide rooms before you get there.

FloweryName · 11/05/2023 16:13

Its fair to pay by room, otherwise the families with fewer children are subsidising the families who have more.

mrsm43s · 11/05/2023 16:21

I'd split it evenly tbh.

mrsm43s · 11/05/2023 16:24

I'd also have each family pick a room in turn, so the two families who need an extra room get the two rooms left that no-one else wants.

Letsallgotothebeach · 11/05/2023 16:27

I would just split it evenly between families.

lunar1 · 11/05/2023 16:29

I would split per room, unless some of them are awful.

PlusOneMet · 11/05/2023 16:33

Per room.
